When is it "too late"?

I'm concerned about the time frame that is setting up for how long FM is going to continue touring (not to mention record a new album). As we all know, because of Chris' return, Stevie hasn't had the time to do any live solo shows to promote 24k. She may not have any time for some time to come as well. So how long is too long to finally do some live shows after a "new" release? At some point isn't it kind of too late?
What's your guys' personal take on that?

Within two year of the album release would be my vote. Promoting it in that time could get the album back on Billboard

Lindsey said he saw this tour going for a few years on Larry King when asked about a solo tour so it's best to abandon all hope of any promotion

sorcerer999 03-28-2015 02:41 PM

Agreed. I think Fleetwood Mac is going to keep her busy for awhile with both this tour AND (hopefully) a new album.

I don't think a 24KG tour is possible anymore, although in my heart of hearts, I hope I'm wrong. I would LOVE for her to find some time to do a quick two or three month tour in the near future (either during the mid July - late October hiatus from Fleetwood, or sometime early 2016) to promote 24KG...but I just don't think it's going to happen.

At this point, it's more than likely (and would make more sense) that she'll record a "Songs From The Vault" Part 2 in the next year or two, and then tour to promote both "vault song" albums.

lulu28 03-28-2015 07:18 PM

I think that Lindsey is dreaming if he thinks she will do another Mac tour next year. I think she will finish up with them by Christmas, MAYBE, give them something for an album, rest during January/February and go solo by March. At least, that's what I hope she does!!!!

gssmith 03-28-2015 08:24 PM

Two ways to look at it: either it's already too late because it came out last year. Or it's never too late. FWM still tours to promote Rumours.

Jondalar 03-29-2015 12:27 AM

She needs to do some promotion for this album. It's not too late. It's one of the best albums she has ever done. It deserves promotion.

johnnystorms 03-29-2015 12:44 AM

with the state of the music industry now, tours don't promote recordings. anyone who wants a new Stevie recording already has it.
They know it was released via the internet.
even if she did a 20 city tour, at 5000 seat sheds, that's close to what the record has already sold.
tours are now just cash in the bank for artists and promoters. it's not like anyone doesn't know she released 24K Gold.
even my BFF who is not a big fan knew it was out.

Not true, all her promotion for In Your Dreams did help sales. She never sold a ton but it kept the album alive. This album is a better album. It's going to get better word of mouth. The more people who hear it, the better.

Besides, this is one of the best albums of her career. She has to promote it.

(I'm really disgusted with so called fans. I feel like some so called fans have tried to sabotage this album for different reasons - upset over the demos she chose, upset she is not on board yet doing a Fleetwood Mac album, upset because her popularity has usurped Fleetwood Macs on tv shows…)

Macfanforever 03-29-2015 12:38 PM

I still think the Rod Stewart tour screwed her release of IYD.She was to sick at the time to give it a good release. She should of takin a raincheck to do that tour and hold it for a better time and stay home and rest and prep for the release of IYD.

Now 24K promotion is in a mess without a good promotion and a promo tour due to her touring with FM.Atlease FM is related then the Rod tour which came out of nowhere was not.

I dont know or dont remember what the deal was with 24K but I think the 24K was rushed because of WB wanted it out or she wanted out of WB.They did not waste anytime to get it out.

The timing was bad for it .Not Mac's fault .Maybe WB.Correct me on this.

olive 03-29-2015 07:48 PM

she made her choices , we have to live with them

WildHearted 03-29-2015 08:04 PM

I think it's already way too late.

Josh2003 03-31-2015 06:31 PM

I can see a tour helping album sales if she actually *promotes* the album during the tour. You know, explaining that you have a new album. Saying the name of the album throughout the show. Identifying new songs and saying things like "This is another new song from my album, 24 Karat Gold."

She doesn't do that. Ever.

True. This points to something I've wished before that I'd love for her to do when she gets a little free time. She could do a handful of theatre shows in select markets, and perform solely 24k material. After all, she released the IYD documentary to the film circuit what, 2 years after that album dropped? Then against all odds she was present for most of the screenings, even did Q&A sessions at them. I think that was one of the more artistically pure things the woman has ever done- I think in some circles, it helped put Stevie into a different echelon. Same with her recent photography exhibition.

My point being, far stranger things have already happened. Granted, this would be her singing to the choir- no new ears would hear the music. But it would be nice to let these songs live at least a brief life onstage. I know Stevie did 24k to fulfill a contractual agreement. But somewhere these songs have to mean something to her. Surely she doesn't want them to just slip away never to be heard again.

olive 04-01-2015 06:11 AM

she would have to repackage it and reissue it like Madonna had to with American Life and put out the Remixed and Revisited ep but i'm sure the record company isn't willing to make that kind of investment in her

Jondalar 04-01-2015 07:03 AM

It's only too late to those who were negative about the album to begin with.

Don't be so quick to discount this option because she may be planning to do just that...

From theMaclean's magazine new interview with Stevie thread

"Q: 24 Karat Gold could easily have a Part 2 or 3 because of the number of demos you have. What would you include on it?

A: I think that this is one of the best records I’ve ever made. So I can’t just let this record go. When the Fleetwood Mac tour is over, I might go straight back to Nashville and record eight or nine songs, and Warner Brothers can take it and repackage the album. I have another 10 demos. "

It won't surprise me if she does this...I also think she may record a few extras and then walks into FM and puts all the finished songs on the table and tells them "pick 5 songs to re record for the FM record and the rest are going on my next release"

olive 04-01-2015 10:25 AM

she says a lot of things .

it's was made and it really was for her fans , i really would be disappointed if she decided to cling to this and not create something new , even if it is a second songs from the vault they are still new and a second if marketed and a tour to promote it, may make the casual fan seek out the first .

A double album? Ordinarily I would say no, but 24k is a really good album. I would love more songs associated with it. It's one of the best things she has ever done.

Dragon 04-01-2015 12:43 PM

An opportunity to promote 24 Karat Gold exists with the "On with the Show" tour. "The Dealer" would be an excellent addition for the set. Constantly touring without refreshing the set list with different arrangements or new songs becomes very dull.

I would prefer to see another album recorded rather than reissuing an existing album multiple times.

The safest way is to release a second installment for the Songs from the Vault series. Not only are there additional songs waiting to see the light of day, opportunities exist to improve released songs like "Smile at You" and "Running through the Garden."

Macfanforever 04-01-2015 02:06 PM

Think positive guys. This is coming from a negative person saying all the negative crap on this forum for almost 12 years..Let her do what she likes to do.I agree with Dragon. She could throw a tune in the setlist as Mick should mention his book is available with this tour.At this point they are promoting nothing.FM had an OP to add a new tunes to prime their fans on their upcoming album but they decline to do so and dont want to make a mountain out of the mole hill more what happening with the recording issue. I wish she filmed 24K like she did with IYD.

Anyway .Busy as she is .I hope she does something .

BITE YOUR TONGUE!!! "Running Through The Garden" is perfection and the BEST song on SYW.

But I will respect your opinion and we can agree to disagree. :xoxo:

I personally wouldn't want to see 24KG repackaged with "additional tracks". And I seriously don't think Warners will do that.

I'd rather see a "SFTV Part 2" released as a separate entity. That way, whether or not she gets to properly tour for 24KG, she can at least do a "Songs From The Vault Tour" and showcase tracks from both albums. That makes the most sense to me.

SisterNightroad 04-01-2015 02:23 PM

As someone has already said, the album was released last year but it's been only 6 months and if I remember well it has been released too late for being nominated at the grammys. I think if she does something, anything she could get a nomination for this year's grammy and finally get her first grammy as a solo artist.
I'm not the kind of person that thinks too highly of these ceremonies but it's still a great opportunity for any artist.

Macfanforever 04-01-2015 02:24 PM

I thought WB was done with her.

I think that would be a much better approach. Now I could be the only one that thinks like this, but I personally think she needs to stay away from the "songs from the vault" "best of" "greatest hits" "oldies" "legacy artist" stereotypes, and give those old songs new life in them, like she did with 24KG, but not so much the emphasis on the age of the songs. I think it's in her best interest to produce something more Tango-esque (Seven Wonders became very popular recently), instead of the classic rock vibe she puts out, of which I personally love. Don't get me wrong, 24KG is one of my all-time favourites, but at the same time I think she could reach a larger audience with those older songs, along with some new ones, that reflect a more modern, forward thinking Stevie. Maybe she could even update her outfits, lol. :D

A more modern Stevie was In Your Dreams and I much prefer 24k. She just needs to do what she does best - classic rock - and not worry about sales. People appreciate quality - don't over think it. She is not going to gain fans with a more techno album.

Maybe not- but it's important to remember her only #1 song as a solo artist was when Planets Of The Universe topped the Dance Charts. That was even this century! :D

Let's also not forget her more "modern" In Your Dreams debuted higher than 24k, sold more copies, and had singles that charted, too. In Your Dreams also probably earned her the best critical reviews of her career to boot. So to say that Stevie should stick to classic rock for the sake of "doing what she does best" is somewhat misguided.

Sorry, but that's not true. I believe "Talk To Me" and "Rooms On Fire" were #1 Rock Songs

Well this is easy to refute.

Metacritic
24k Gold = 73% positive ratings score
Trouble in Shangri La = 70% positive ratings score
In Your Dreams = 62%

So In Your Dreams has the lowest score of all three albums. And keep in mind, 24K Gold only has 14 reviews posted on the site by critics. They didn't even include a lot of her best ratings. However, it also received the least amount of hate from critics.

Also, it is sort of manipulative to mention Planets of the Universe. This was her first solo album after the Dance and basically Planets sounded like any other dance thumper. Whoopie. The record company promoted it, but it didn't a lot of good.

It's also manipulative to mention sales. As far as sales are concerned, Stevie promoted the hell out of In Your Dreams. The only thing that helped her sales seemed to be TV appearances. She did have real videos for a couple of singles and made appearances to radio stations to get those singles to barely chart on non-popular formats.

One reason In Your Dreams debuted higher than 24K because it did not generate excitement for the next album. Also, the record company probably learned a big lesson from In Your Dreams. Radio Stations aren't going to play new Stevie Nicks singles. Why promote them.

Oh and don't forget the In Your Dreams buzz - STEVIE'S FIRST ALBUM IN 10 YEARS.

rubylounge 04-01-2015 05:34 PM

I was just thinking the same thing the other day. It almost seems like a moot point to promote it since it's been a year.....................

Jondalar 04-01-2015 05:34 PM

P.S. I hate to speak negative about In Your Dreams. I like the album. I feel like she tried a good pop album and feel she did that.

However, I feel like 24K Gold is the real deal, the real music that made her a star. The place where she belongs.

If only 24K could of replaced Trouble in Shangri La or The Other Side of the Mirror. She had backing then by the industry. It would have done way better than those.

I made that suggestion too. It makes sense, as the 24 Karat album will be an afterthought once Fleetwood Mac gets off the road and finishes their album.

The initial media promotion leading up to the album's released did what it could, but that ship has sailed. A tour is not going to have any significant impact if she hits the road with yet another predictable set giving a nod to the album with just three or four "new" songs, and one getting dropped several shows into the tour.

But if she banged out another album like that and toured behind both album, I wish she would radically change the set list. She's been singing some of same songs for over forty years, both in the band and solo. She's driven them into the ground. Sure, they're great songs and performed well. But she has vast amount of songs worthy being performed live.

Give well-worn songs like Rhiannon, Landslide, Gold Dust Woman, Dreams and Stand Back a rest. Free the set list up to shine a light on her newer songs, and a few deep tracks that never made the stage like Wild Heart, Sable on Blonde, Highway Man, Kind of Woman, Long Way to Go, Violet and Blue, or Rock a Little. Turn the table upside down and open the show with Edge of Seventeen!

Market the tour as something like a "Songs from Vault and Beyond" tour -- to stress that is something special - a rare 24 karat golden opportunity to experience the other side of her mirror. If anyone has an issue with it, then simply don't go. The unconventional approach would spur a lot of press and draw in audiences.

Of course this "radical" concept will never happen. It was just a wish, it was just a wish. It will only exist in your dreams.

When Nicks was doing the tour promoting the In Your Dreams movie, she said that up to that time In Your Dreams (the album) had sold about 300,000 copies worldwide. I wonder how much the movie tour added to those sales figures?

But the Metacritic rating for IYD is hampered by two exceptionally bad (and IMO bizarre) reviews. TISL got really solid good reviews, with a few "meh" reviews. IYD got really great reviews and a few "absolutely rotten" reviews.

I think all 3 albums are quite good, among Nicks' best. As I've said before, her really only sub-par album is Street Angel.

pauls90 04-07-2015 01:09 PM

Well I think that Stevie's refusal to even mention the new FM album/material is an indication that she has something planned after this current tour.

IF that's the case, what I would like to see her do is maybe reissue the album with 3-4 new songs, and then go out on a short 10-15 show tour. It wouldn't do much for the album, but I feel like she's definitely itching to play some of these songs live and give the album a fraction of the attention she would have loved to have given it. She could also record one of the shows and put it out, whether on DVD/Demand, or even just on iTunes for fans! Then once those shows are done, she can get back to work with the band.

Not sure a reissue of an album only a year or two old would accomplish much.

Releasing a Vault volume two (whatever she may actually end up calling it) and then touring a "Songs from the Vault" tour (whatever she actually calls it) that includes songs from both Vault albums would be more productive in terms of going forward rather than backward.

I'll be curious to see if she does continue with the Vault theme or if she does another album of all new material next, and saves Vault 2 for the next "quickie" release when she's busy with FM.
