Record Machine: Top 5 Lindsey Buckingham Songs

After writing about Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie songs, I couldn’t very well leave out Lindsey Buckingham’s contributions to Fleetwood Mac. So let’s get to five of my favorite songs from the man himself.


Admittedly, I’m not well-versed in his solo material, so this will be rather band-centric. Still, here are the tunes I’m most into at the moment:

“What Makes You Think You’re The One”


What makes you think I’m the one
Who will love you forever?
Everything you do has been done
And this won’t last forever
Man, Tusk is full of “I am so totally over you Stevie, except not except I totally am, okay?” songs. The whole album is him angrily writing his way out, even though he wouldn’t leave the band (temporarily) for another ten years. But at the moment of writing and recording this song? He is tired, angry, and on his way.

Why don’t you tell me what’s going on?
Why don’t you tell me who’s on the phone?
And speaking of Tusk the album, I have to include the marching band-heavy title song. This song veers away from the anger (mostly) and instead turns to jealousy. I don’t know if it’s accurate to say that this is about the Stevie-Mick affair, or if it’s just a general commentary on the changing relationships within the band in general, but they somehow made infidelity … danceable? Yes, the drums are my favorite part of the song, followed closely by Christine McVie strolling around with a glass of wine in the video.

“Big Love” (Live)


You said that you love me
And that you always will
Oh you begged me to keep you
In that house on the hill
I am about 1000x more into the finger-picking version of this song than I am with its 1987 Tango in The Night version, though I like that one fine. Normally, I can take or leave Lindsey’s extended guitar solos, but the one beginning around the 1:25 mark leading into the bridge — now that’s some magnificence.

“Come” (live)


Now I lay me down to sleep in this enemy bed
Tomorrow morning I will wake up hurting from the things we’ve said
One thing leads to another but I guess you know about that
Can you feel the fever?
It’s too bad Lindsey comes across as such a jerk when it comes to his personal relationships most of the time, because this song is pretty sexy. I mean, yeah, it’s still talking about infidelity, but the way he draws out the word “come?” Come, indeed. I’ll even forgive the noodly guitar solo that goes on too long — that’s how much I like this song. I wanted to include it, since I’m not sure how aware of it people are, since it comes from the post-Dance album, Say You Will.

“Monday Morning”


You only want me when I get over you
First you love me then you get on down the line
But I don’t mind
I don’t mind
I’ll be there if you want me to
No one else that could ever do
This 1980 live album version is fairly close to the album version, but there’s an enthusiastic edge to it that I enjoy. What a difference between this early ’70s song and his attitude that comes at the end of the decade. Here, he’s willing to endure a tumultuous relationship, but it’s still the beginning of the end for him and Stevie.

What feel do you feel after reading this post?

I think it's interesting that Come is listed! I didn't think a whole lot of people cared for it. I like it, but it's not on my favorite list. I'd rather it get switched out (along with NBGA) on his next OMS tour with something else. If only Murrow (soundstage version) and ISA didn't have the same solo/outro... ;)

yeah i thought that was really interesting list from someone who says she doesn't know any of his solo stuff. looks like she would love his latter day solo albums!

see, to me Come, BTLH and NTL (the song that i really dislike normally!) were the highlights on his most recent solo tour. along with OMS version of ISA.

in complete agreement with you on NBGA. that was the only song version i didn't like on OMS tour.

I like Come, but not on SYW. It should have been a solo song.

I was surprised to see it, since I don't see much love for it. Its one of my favorite LB songs.

I love "Come" live but not on SYW.He really makes it a show highlight the way he draws out the word "come" and coupled with the mellow beat in the background that slowly intensifies,and then he holds his head and closes his eyes when he says "can you feel the fever?" to further intensify it as if to show the pinnacle of sexual tension....lordy,lordy....Damn! Is it hot in here or is it just me?:p.......Anyways,I heard that Stevie was really pissed about the song being in the set for obvious reasons.She's such a prude,don't you know:rolleyes:

This is hard because most of his music sounds so shrill to me...just my opinion. Great guitar player but not a fan of his screaming voice.

And am I the only person on earth who has never really cared for Big Love (and the squealing orgasmic noises, ugh...) I would rather see Come performed any day over Big Love by far.

Oh shoot and I left out Bleed to Love her! Know I've had a discussion before with another Ledgie who loves the song as much as I do. Live not so much the SYW version.

When they were recording, the band was marred in tension and conflict by the break-ups between vocalists Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, as well as the failed marriage between keyboardist Christine and bassist John McVie. Basically, everyone but drummer Mick Fleetwood, in the back there. *Under breath*: Awkwaaaard.

The first single from Rumours, Go Your Own Way, is widely considered the gold-standard in heartbreak anthems. Fun Fact: It's also a very popular funeral song.
