I'd bet they were initially going to do Glastonbury but IOW must have offered a shed load more money. Bad decision imo. Whoever is advising them has made a big mistake. They will likely get more money from doing IOW in the first instance but Glastonbury would have been worth 10 times more in the longer term. Perhaps it was Mick's decision- he sees a relatively small proportion of the music sales. I really fancy going to this now- I love the Isle of Wight. |
Big letdown for me. IoW is a fairly standard festival - but it will be offering more money and as we know with FM, money talks.
But very few people can ever say they've headlined Glastonbury. |

Yes, this isn't really an 'ensuring the legacy'-type decision, is it? Glastonbury would have been wonderful, and they'd have gone down a storm.
But then the Stones played the Isle of Wight, and then triumphed at Glasto a few years later, so there is a precedent if they want to do it in the future... (Wishful thinking, I know!) |

I know I'm in the minority here, but I think it's great that they've chosen a smaller festival. It sort of bugs me that if you are a huge band, you must headline Glastonbury. I really like it that they are doing it differently. I see them suiting a smaller festival rather than the gigantic Glastonbury. I went years ago and enjoyed it but wouldn't want to go now. My friend was working there last year and said it was just too big and too many people - it took her forever to walk from her tent to anywhere.
It will be a fantastic atmosphere on the Isle of Wight - lucky IoW festival goers! I look forward to seeing the coverage. Also, when the Stones played Glastonbury some of the tabloid media coverage was horrendous - "Night of the Living Dead" was the first headline I saw, along the most unflattering photo they could have possibly found. I know that FM are no where near as battered at The Stones, but if they ever do play Glastonbury, I hope the tabloids are kinder with their images. |

Dec 07 2014 02:29:51 Dec. 07 (Sunday Mirror) -- Fleetwood Mac were revealed as the incredible headline act of next year's Isle of Wight Festival - and I'm told they'll pocket a small fortune for it. The British-American stars were snapped up by festival boss John Giddings for the exclusive performance, after he tempted them away from a rumoured appearance at Glastonbury. Organisers remain tight-lipped on the fee but industry sources tell me it could be as much as Pounds 2.5million. A music source told me: "It's a huge fee, but this is a big deal and there was a lot of interest in signing them. It's one of the biggest sums ever paid for a festival headliner - but the organisers know it will be worth every penny." A festival spokesman this week refused to comment. |

By saying it's some kind of exclusive worldwide deal, I wonder are they going to film it. Maybe the exclusive part of it is that it's the only stop on the tour that will be filmed. Michele |

The band now boast their “classic” line-up after Christine McVie rejoined her ex-husband John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks last year. Giddings, 62, said he had been trying to convince them to play at his festival for seven years. He added: “They are the jewel in the crown this year — getting them was a fantastic result. I'd approached them repeatedly and they hadn’t had much interest in it. “But with Christine McVie rejoining the band they seem to have revitalised themselves. I went to them and said what about this year? “And they said they weren’t keen on playing in the open air, but they spoke to Tom Petty and the Kings of Leon who said they had a great time at the festival. They managed to convince them.” Giddings, who also acts as an agent for artists including Madonna, Justin Timberlake and Pharrell Williams, believes the rapid rise in the number of UK festivals is unsustainable. He added: “I think there has been an explosion of them and I think there will be a natural levelling at some point. “There’s not enough people or money in the UK to sustain an event every weekend down the road. Level-headed and prone to understatement when I interviewed her for the Guardian in 2013, she described the songwriting gift that enabled her to knock out such hits as Don’t Stop and Little Lies as follows: “I don’t know what it is really … I think I’m just good with hooks.” During that interview, she went on to discuss the band’s legendarily gargantuan drug intake without a hint of romance – “Well, I’d be lying if I said I was sober as a judge” – and described the crazy routine the band adhered to at the peak of their success in similar terms: “You look at tennis players; it’s the same kind of thing.” So grounded can McVie appear that it’s almost surprising that the songs she writes take flight so effortlessly: heartfelt and clear, they’re given extra wind beneath their wings by her pure, songbird falsetto. This summer, those heading to the Isle of Wight festival will get to see her perform them, something many Mac fans feared they would never see again: McVie left the group in 1998, succumbing to a fear of flying and longing for a quiet life in the country; she rejoined in 2014. It’s a testament to Fleetwood Mac’s abundance of talent that they have not just survived without McVie and her many hits during this 16-year absence, but delivered storming three-hour sets packed with classic tracks. Great though those shows were, it wasn’t quite Fleetwood Mac. McVie’s songs don’t just stand out in their own right, but also provide a counterbalance to the other artistic directions in the band. Less mystical than Stevie Nicks’ and less wilfully experimental than some of Lindsey Buckingham’s, McVie’s simple songs of love nonetheless brim with a sense of positivity, not to mention an abundance of melody. Her musical gifts – let’s not forget she’s a skilled keyboard player with a style schooled in the blues – are not the only reason Mac fans should celebrate her return. In a famously fractured band, whose existence always seems precariously balanced, thanks to decades of broken marriages, flings and rows, McVie’s down-to-earth personality provides a steadying role similar to that of her songs. She always seemed capable of rising above the tangled love dramas that caused jealously and tantrums among the men, and her enduring friendship with Nicks helped the pair to face the perils of being female artists during the sexist 70s. When McVie first left, Nicks said she was heartbroken; today she talks lovingly about having her musical sister back in the band: “When I finish Silver Springs, Christine waits for me and takes my hand,” she recently told Canadian magazine Maclean’s. “We walk off and we never let go of each other until we get to our tent. In that 30 seconds, it’s like my heart just comes out of my body.” McVie is too key a figure for Fleetwood Mac to have carried on touring without her, and drummer Mick Fleetwood has admitted that her return to the band makes them “complete” again. Speaking to the Vancouver Sun in March, he added that he “couldn’t think of a better ending, when this does end … we’re all on the same page and writing the same last chapter”. I think they have made a big mistake... they may have been paid more
to play IOW but they should have played the pyramid at glastonbury. It will be there last chance i think. Im sure with the BBC coverage they would have made their money back via cd sales. its such a shame... |

I said – I paid them!” Isle of Wight festival boss John Giddings won’t have been kidding when he explained earlier this month how he brought the ‘Rumours’ titans back to British soil for – let’s face it – the summer’s biggest festival booking. Muse at Download will be a razzle-dazzle pomp-rock triumph, at the hallowed home of the sort of scorched riffs ‘Drones’ has in abundance: Donnington. The Libertines at Reading and Leeds will be a suitably raucous, debauchery-filled introduction to the new material the Albion boys have been cooking up in Thailand for months, their first in over a decade. And Kanye’s a coup for Glastonbury, of course. But even Yeezy’s inaugural spot at Worthy Farm doesn’t pack the significance, anticipation or sense of history the Mac’s UK festival return promises. They won’t have come cheap, but they’ll be worth every penny. For a while, it seemed this year might be the year the band topped the bill at Glastonbury. Alas, Giddings was the more persuasive and persistent. He claims to have spent years doggedly trying to convince the band to come to Seaclose Park. This weekend, it finally happens. And it’s the only place you’ll be able to see them this summer: the group signed an exclusive worldwide deal with the festival upon agreeing to headline, making this their only festival appearance of 2015, and an absolute must see for everyone making the trek to Newport. The stage couldn’t be more perfectly set. The reintegration of Christine McVie into the band in 2014 after a 17-year hiatus means that this is the most complete Fleetwood Mac line-up we’ve seen in decades. We’re also a couple of years into the group’s comeback now meaning you can forget about them being rusty – as anyone at their London O2 Arena show a couple of weeks back will attest, last year’s monster 33-date US reunion tour has fashioned Stevie Nicks’ crew into sharp crowd-pleasers. Recent set lists have been basically a guide to their greatest hits. Which is just as well – tracks like the massive ‘Rhiannon’, festival staple ‘The Chain’ and of course ‘Dreams’ are anthems made for swooning along to in sunny festival fields as the sun falls on a rowdy, cider-soaked main stage crowd. How much longer will the Fleetwood reunion last for? It’s possible the much-heralded Glastonbury slot may never materialize, that this could be their UK swansong. If that’s the case, expect them to bow out in formidable style at Isle of Wight this weekend. And in case you need any more convincing the festival is going to be a belter, here’s five other artists to look forward to. Blur This year might have seen the release Blur’s first new album since 2003, but the band are well drilled on the festival circuit, delivering triumphant performances at Glastonbury, Hyde Park and many others in recent years. ‘The Magic Whip’ has given the foursome some fresh energy though and tracks taken from the album, like the jangly ‘Lonesome Street’ and rousing ‘Ong Ong’, are likely to be central to their set. Still, expect the boys to dip into the past on at least a few occasions, with classics like ‘Tender’, ‘Beetlebum’ and ‘Girls and Boys’ all potentially on the setlist for some rousing sing-alongs. |
