Collectors Corner

I was just curious, with all the new technology, mp3's etc, what is the state of collecting out there? I am old school and want hard copies of everything (I still buy cd's and vinyl). Do the younger folks collect that way? Or do they not really care? What and how do you collect?

I thought we might start a thread and we could compare notes on what is out there, the reproductions surfacing, and any general or specific collecting questions we might have. Things we are looking for, want to trade, things we found....

Any die hard collectors left?

I'm 25 and my SO and I collect everything we can find :) minus CDs however. I find CDs just clutter up my car, so I prefer digital when it comes to that aspect. But if it's on vinyl, I'm gonna get it! We buy most everything fm related we can find; posters, 45's, 12" maxis, all picture sleeves, "promotional use only", shirts, magazines, you name it. ;) I also collect mp3 demos/outtakes if they're good.

Seeker, what's your most treasured item?

GarboSpeaks! 08-10-2014 01:54 PM

I've been an FM collector since I can remember. Favoring SN, but collecting most anything to do w/ Rumours lineup FM. I have over 350 45's of just the Mac and solo members, close to 150 12" records (albums from all over world, singles, etc) Posters coming out my sides, concert t's, nik, naks, Maybe 100+cd's of just them, photos-GADS of photos, and most recently to my surprise over 4 large (11x17) scrap book books full of loose clippings and photos. Near 400 pages, so roughly 100 pages a book. Magazines, books, personal items (limited) and jeez-idk what else. If I didn't collect Stevie-I honestly don't know what hobby I'd have. Maybe therapy sessions. :]

James89 08-10-2014 02:45 PM

I won't buy anything digitally. I only bought Extended Play on iTunes because that was the only way of buying it. I'm really into a bit of a phase now where I buy all things Stevie and FM on vinyl and some on CD. I've recently bought A LOT of 7 and 12" singles from various record shops and I love studying the covers and I also like the smell! I recently bought a 12" version of Whole Lotta Trouble for just £3, which I think is rare, and a limited edition photo pack version of Sometimes it's a Bitch on 7". I also bought a lot of FM stuff but I don't think anything is especially rare. I love collecting vinyl and I've already ordered 24 Karat Gold on vinyl and I'm sure I'll get my hands on Fleetwood Mac's new album on vinyl, if it's available.
I'm interested to hear if anyone has the same vinyls as me or has anything especially rare as I'm really intrigued. ;)

I have been fortunate enough to have met both Fmac and Stevie on several occasions. Back in the early 80's both were much more approachable, and getting backstage was relatively easy. I have some autographed things and some personal items they gave to me. My most treasured item is my memories of speaking to them all at length. All of them have always been very kind and down to earth.

BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL - of autographs. Unless you see them sign in person, or know the source very well, I wouldn't touch an autograph for sale. Unfortunately, Stevie has had her people sign for her. I was very disappointed when I saw that. COA's are completely worthless. Also to tell if one is legit is very difficult, especially when the band was practicing better living through chemistry, shall we say.

Sounds very familiar. And yet I still come across stuff I didn't know existed. Some stuff I found early on has never surfaced again in nearly 40 years. Some I picked up, others I kick myself for passing on. Oh well, live and learn.

The rarest vinyl I know of is some promotional picture discs of Belladonna and Wild Heart lp's.

Will a big fat zero on todays sound and video files for any collecting value.

I'm old school all the way. Thank goodness that vinyl is popping back in the picture .They can keep the MP3's The image files and Frisbee the CD's out the window

Back in the early 1990's Way before Ebay I received the Goldmine collectors magazine from my neighbor. I must of spend $1000 and $1000 on Stevie and FM stuff.

The problem now is the counterfeit stuff out there.

I loved Goldmine! One of my letters got published in it when I asked a question about Stevie and Fritz _ They couldn't answer it.

The counterfeit stuff I see is mostly in paper goods and fake t-shirts. Posters are especially reproduced. Stay completely away from autographs. Lots of fake merchandise too. One of the reasons I started this thread is so we all could comment and compare information.

Collector tip: Paying extra for something still in shrink wrap. Anything can be reshrinkwrapped. Easy and cheap to do.

GarboSpeaks! 08-10-2014 10:17 PM

Those pic discs are priority #1 for me to obtain. I've only ever seen them in pics, never in person. I know NO ONE who has them-and I've only ever heard that people do. I knew some hardcore record fanatics before my time and when they didn't have them I thought wow-maybe these don't exist. LOL
JAMES89 if interested, PM me your email and I'll send you all the files (pics) I last took of my collection. Like I stated, my 45 collection on FM, SN, Chris & Lindsey (w/some "related" thrown in) is actually nearing more to 400. My LP's I haven't counted lately, but be well aware that what you may have from Germany (45 or LP or cd for that matter) can be substantially different (pic/font/song placement) than UK or France. Is (imho) very interesting.
SEEKER~I found an old ebay auction slip I printed of purchased BN singles from Australia. Thankfully I bought them as I don't see them anymore. I paid (what I thought to be) an exuberant amount of money 10+ years ago but oh man what I'd pay today had I now gotten them. We should start a thread of "I could kick myself in ass" for times we've passed on buying Mac related items, missed the boat on meeting them, etc. lol

Yes I agree. With todays technology with computer printers ,screen printing.

Yes Re-shrink wrapping .I worked at two warehouses years back that had shrink wrap machines .So they are available.

Also beware of radio shows on CD on Ebay.I purchased some that were burned copies of Stevie's Jim Ladd interviews and other interviews ,Radio live concerts and they were not original radio station copies. They played great but they were not original.

I remember the Ebayer screwed up on the 1983 Jim Ladd interview and left a segment out.He reshipped a complete copy with no hassles.

seeker007nmss 08-11-2014 07:05 AM

And to add to the "kick in the ass" I should have bought that category is the "feel the burn" I way overpaid or this is fake category. Wait, what? They have it on that other site at half the cost? And the ever popular - they never issued that, it is a fantasy piece. :o

HelloMonster 08-11-2014 04:10 PM

I recently had a "kick in the ass" moment, too! There was a huge like 4ft by 4ft Rumours album poster in an antique mall in Kansas City. The seller supposedly was someone who used to own a record store that went out of business, but who knows. All I know is that they wanted $300 for it, and we just couldn't do it at the time. But when we got the money and called, OF COURSE it had just been purchased. Bastards!

Macfanforever 08-11-2014 07:30 PM

I had my share of "Kicking my fat ass" on some eBay items getting out bid.

But on the flip side, sometimes stuff goes for "crazy money". "I will go to the outragious heights of $200.00 on that." SOLD $3300. *faint*

It's a more personal and intimate experience when you have something in your hands. Digital media leaves me cold because it's less physical. It becomes more disposable because your relativity to it is more distant. Aside from music, I love books and I see the convenience of e-books. But it's such a sterile experience when compared to a real book. There is a reason why vinyl albums are having a new wave of popularity. It's not just about the sound; it's because you're having a much deeper, richer connection to the artist and the music. I only buy digital music when there isn't another alternative.

I have a tun of vinyl; dozens of crates. It's a bitch to move because it's so heavy! I only buy special editions sparingly. They are very expensive! Of course I ordered Stevie's new album. Here in Portland there are many stores that sell new vinyl. Everyday Music has two different stores right next to each other; one that just sells CDs, the other just sells vinyl. The vinyl record albums are like works of art. A lot of them are from obscure or unfamiliar artists with creative, crazy and cool artwork. I go in there just to marvel at them like I'm at a museum.

I have three huge cabinets packed with hundreds and hundreds of CDs. I have another cabinet filled just with CD singles. I crate with 12 inch Vinyl singles, and a box rare and not so rare picture sleeve singles. I have at least 35 box sets, and numerous amounts of memorabilia - posters, pictures, promo items etc...

I started collecting in the late 1970s. I'm a completest. If I get obsessed with a particular band or artist, I make it a mission to get everything they released. I'm more picky now with new bands. The Black Keys is the most current band that I collected.

I agree with that.I like the Goldmine mag with the set sale prices.Ever some dealers will work with the prices.

The fleamarkets and tag sales are the best to find deals because the seller does not know the value of the product and wants to dump it cheap.
I found alot of Stevie/FM goodies that way.

I have had to focus more as the years go by. Too many interests, not enough space. I parred down to just a few areas. Some stuff I collected, I enjoyed, but found I never looked at much. It was time to pass them on to people who really enjoyed them.

this is probably one of my favorite items in my collection to date. It's extra special because it's signed to me and signed by Christine, Mick, and Lindsey.
I've always loved this photo from the last night of the Tusk Tour at the Hollywood Bowl, which makes it extra special.

No .You dont have to apologize Anita .Hahaha .It's just my bad timing and luck with the bidding. Maybe next time.LOL....Only kidding

I was so happy when I won the bid on Stevie's Source radio special years ago and a couple legit radio station copies of Stevie/FM radio interviews on CD last year.

Wow .Thanks for sharing that gem BigAl.

Thank you for the kind words, after 15 years of collecting...it's probably my favorite. It was always a goal to get a complete set of authentic autographs including john and Stevie, but that is very hard to do. This is about as close as I'm ever going to get. I have Stevie's signature on two different items. John is the only one I don't have.

Found an excellent site for you completionists out there. Even they are missing a few, but it is a nice list.

Your lucky to have those picture LP's, I tried to bid on them on eBay both times and lost , its been awhile since those where posted on eBay? I don't recall the years maybe between 05-08? Its hard to recall but I haven't seen them since. I do recall another guy had them in the 90's that I'd bought from too , cause he'd sent me his list but I didn't know what they were at the time or I would've asked him about them. I got a lot of stuff from Goldmine as well. I've been a collector since the late 80's (like 88). I've got a lot of cool things and than there's stuff I'd wished I'd not ever gotten if I could've seen it back in the 'day' when I'd started. The Net does make it helpful to know what your buying with pictures. I do have the Belladonna UK standup but its not a full life size standup. It can stand on a counter or hang on the wall. Thats where I have mine at on the wall so I can see it. Its a little damaged at the edges but it is awesome. Its Stevie wearing the light blue beret hat looking through the crystal tambourine (I'd love to find one of them too hard I keep looking though and the cool beret hat as well) holding a rose. There's a UK poster to this as well that's a different photo of this set of pictures (would love to see the whole set of photos from this photo shoot). I tried to win that poster but was outbid on it. Theres the WH benefit poster with the fan I've been seeking as well. There Timespace UK standup that I've only seen twice. Wild Heart logo promo jacket. The 3-D WH outtakes cards that I tried to win on eBay but lost. I do have the one's sold on the tour though (the 2 the red/black ones') Tusk Vest that I was outbid on eBay, I hate those one's that 'get away'. Countless other outbids, things I'd wished I'd tried for but didn't. 1/2 moon necklace/autographed posters etc. I still collect cds as well. Some things might be bootlegs likes shirts etc. but some are really cool too. There better than the original shirts sold. I recall I did wear one to a CV concert and someone really liked it. Anyway, we all have things that we wish we could find or locate. I hope we all find it and at some sort of reasonable prices cause some are just outrageous ya know. :D:shrug::]

I'm selling all 3 as a package deal. There is a scratch on side 2 of the 3rd disc but I don't know if it makes the record skip. PM me with a reasonable offer that will include shipping and to be sent to you certified.

Do you remember what those discs went for? I bought mine in the pre-ebay days. I also would like to see your stand up. :) Some of the stuff on ebay does go for crazy money at times. Timing is everything.

I'm selling all 3 as a package deal. There is a scratch on side 2 of the 3rd disc but I don't know if it makes the record skip. PM me with a reasonable offer that will include shipping and to be sent to you certified.

Can you repost the pics? Not showing up for me.:nod:

This is a picture of of some of my collectables. This is the picture I took and sent to the Oprah show producers back in 2011. I have since added some things such as posters and CD's to the collection.

Do you remember what those discs went for? I bought mine in the pre-ebay days. I also would like to see your stand up. :) Some of the stuff on ebay does go for crazy money at times. Timing is everything.

Hi: I think they went for over $200.00 at that time. I wanted them but not for that high. I wished I'd asked that one guy that I knew that had them, but I don't think he was selling them at the time. If I could I'd post a photo of the stand up, but call me silly, I'm not sure how to post photos on here. Did you try goggling the item cause it might be in the Stevie images if you check? The one I have on my computer isn't the one I won though it was someone else's that I'd kept on my computer. I try to keep the photo's now but not than. Yeah, I agree some stuff goes way too high on eBay. I like good deals , I've over spent in the past and don't like to do that anymore. I do agree about the autographs of Stevie/Mac etc. but sometimes they are real. You just have to be a skeptic about them. Not that I'm no expert. Even shirts and stuff aren't real etc. Some are really cool though. I almost wished that Stevie or Mac's camp had thought of some of the bootleg shirts that I've seen on eBay. Like Stevie should've put out all of her 45 PS as shirts, she did some but not all esp. the Bella Donna one's. There's much that they could offer through the years but just don't. Even for the new 24K Gold, a shirt with the lithograph picture would've been a nice addition to the mix, or a special poster. Of course all the original outtakes/demos CD would've been cool too. Not that I'm not happy with what we aren't getting just as a fan I can always think of much much more. How much did you spend on those LP pictured disc's of Stevie's? just wondering.:D
