The Dealer

Since the first single has now been released in Australia and the UK, and will be released in the US in a few hours, I'm curious as to people's opinions of the finished track.

Personally, I think it's been decently produced, it's nothing revolutionary, but we were never going to get that with this album. It does seem to be quite low quality in places - you can hear the limitations of the format.

I also feel as though her voice seems considerably 'thinner' on this release, although this likely is due to her age.

Machu 08-04-2014 07:21 PM

It's very nice. Of course I haven't heard the whole thing yet but my impression so far is that it stays true to the demo (which is one of my favorites). It's very "first-single-Stevie-Nicks"--meaning safe. Her voice sounds good though not as strong as on the "In Your Dreams" album. I wish they had added a few more embellishments like they did with "Secret Love" but I'm sure some will be fine that they didn't because overproduction seemed to be some people's complaints for that album. Not mine though. :D These things always grow more and more on me and I already like it.

Bottom line: I like it and I'm super thankful! I can't wait to buy it and pre-order the album in all of it's formats!

Are you listening to the snippet? Because the sound quality is terrible...It sounds like someone recorded it with a smart phone...Still waiting for The Dealer" to surface outside of iTunes...

iTunes previews always sound so horrible.

ricohv 08-04-2014 07:33 PM

I'm glad it wasn't just me that thought the sound quality on this snippet isn't very good (I thought the same-that it sounded like it was recorded on a cell phone).

It's on Amazon in the UK. No physical copies yet, but digital is there.

(I'm not in the UK, I just frantically checked the amazon site there, lol)

No, I've bought the track, that was the purpose of the thread. I'm curious as to what people think of the actual, released track.

Josh2003 08-04-2014 07:42 PM

It sounds like it was recorded on a cell phone because it was. The person who uploaded it could only record from the iTunes "preview" snippet and used his phone to do so.

The actual version will be much better quality.

Thank you-that makes sense! Ricoh

This is what I've been listening to. I posted how to listen to the higher quality preview snippet in another thread but here's a rip I made of the clip: http://www.sharebeast.com/s5jkv4ohxdtp

I don't think this sounds "Tusk-esque" at all. I think it resembles the Heartbreakers version from the "Bella Donna" sessions far more.

She's sounding her age...and I LIKE THAT! The harmonies are always flawless and the production is great. Definitely got that "Nashville" sound.

That being said, it's a good song but I'm not as excited about it as a lead single (or a single at all) more than I was when "Secret Love" was released.

SpyNote 08-04-2014 10:34 PM

The Dealer on iTunes US now. Go buy it!

Jondalar 08-04-2014 10:35 PM

U can download it in the US right now

I know what you mean, it does sound very 'Heartbreakers-esque'. And yes, her harmonies with 'The Girls' are a real highlight of the track.

the keyboards definitely sound like Benmont Tench so I'll be curious to see the credits.

She IS sounding her age, and I'm ambivalent about that.:sorry:

I think the production is great. But it was more or less finished in the versions we've heard before, so the other demos that were less polished may impress more. I'm most looking forward to "All the Beautiful Worlds," one of my favorite demos of all time. Her voice was pretty ragged at that point, so I think her current voice should be able to handle it pretty well.

blinker12 08-04-2014 10:43 PM

Really love the production and arrangement here, but that vocal - oy.

I cringe most at the way she strains to go up high on "and my wine…" in the second verse. It just sounds like a scream? I suppose I have in mind her velvety falsetto from 1981, and that's not fair. (Or isn't it? We heard her do falsetto on IYD a few times…)

On the plus side, I like the extra low note she adds to "I gave it all ouuu-out" the second or third time around. Very nice, and suits her current voice well.

This reminds me how hard it'll be to let go of my memory of her original, 30-year-old vocals on many of these songs!

Agreed. And as to the Dealer, I listened to the Tusk demo again, and frankly, her voice sounds strained and thin. I far prefer the new (released!) version. Loving it.

jkmaletic 08-04-2014 10:47 PM

I think she sounds great and so does the production.

I'd like to thank whoever figured out that it was even available for download today. I mean, no announcement or anything (other than obscure messages from Dave Stewart).

Such smart and investigative fans - who needs Liz Rosenberg! (just kidding Liz- you're cool and everything.)

Jondalar 08-04-2014 10:49 PM

It's a comfortable song, not really single material but good and solid.

StevieNicksfann 08-04-2014 10:52 PM

I think it's a great single - verse, chorus with a great hook. So glad to hear this finally released. I only wish the lyric Jesse Showed Me At An Early Age was in it but all in all, I love it!

mitzo 08-04-2014 10:54 PM

It is a certain type of Stevie song, certainly not one I would have chosen. It sounds, well, boring. And quite casually produced and sung. A skip-over for me. But let's see how the rest sound. I am not inclined to pre-order based on this clip.

Phoenixgypsy 08-04-2014 10:55 PM

I am loving this!! This has been my favorite demo since I first heard it, I think back in 89. I am so excited that we finally have an official version of The Dealer!!

KarmaContestant 08-04-2014 10:57 PM

Her vocal really warms up later in the song. Overall, I like it!
It might have been nice to have layered her the vocals and harmonies throughout the entire song. It would lend some punchiness and give it that 7" mix quality that is so great about single mixes.

BlueLight 08-04-2014 11:15 PM

I love it. But I gotta say, I miss that "yeaahhh," after "Id've run away." Just sayin.

gssmith 08-04-2014 11:18 PM

How do you download it from iTunes?

gssmith 08-04-2014 11:27 PM

Wholly ****! You can download it! I just realized it. I never would have tried if it wasn't for y'all.

That's more the trick, I think. Her voice is different now, but I don't think she's straining so much as just singing differently. There's a lot of complexity to her voice in this song, she sounds more soulful and in control to me than she has in about 30 years. I've been listening to this intermittently between songs on The Wild Heart and it stands, as far as I'm concerned. I really #%&*ing love this song. :blob2:

^This. It's clear why it never made an album before.

AliceLover 08-04-2014 11:42 PM

Not loving it as much as Secret Love, when it came out. The second half if the song is certainly better!

Hmmm. I suppose I'm biased since I loved the demo versions too. But it doesn't bore me at all. I always felt that, of all the outtakes and reel songs, this one really should have been on Bella Donna, and it's absence (right between Glitter and Seventeen) seems glaringly obvious to me.

Edit: I felt the same way about Belle Fleur not being on The Wild Heart

BombaySapphire3 08-04-2014 11:58 PM

Just got it off Amazon..it sounds pretty much the way I expected it to when I predicted multiple times on here that it would be the first single.:oI actually like her vocals on this one as well as the production which feels more organic than much of IYD IMO.I doubt it will be my favorite on the album but it is a nice classic sounding California rock song.

I thought it was FM77 who advised the scoop on "The Dealer" being the lead single?

Richard B 08-05-2014 12:26 AM

I pre-ordered on iTunes and got The Dealer, but it has the album art, not the single artwork. Love the song...they did a nice job with it.

Turn It On 08-05-2014 12:30 AM

Listening to it more, the vocals are pretty solid, but there is one bit:

"And my wiiine/
I see the sundown"

Yikes...

Nope FM77 predicted it would be the first track on the album..which it actually isn't.I predicted it would be the lead single..Go back and read our posts if you care to bother.

My deafness to bad Stevie must be in full swing, lol. Other people have mentioned this part too, but I can't hear anything wrong with it.

Goodness gracious - you deserve a medal mate!

KenshiMaster16 08-05-2014 01:48 AM

I don't know if it's just because I've spent some many years listening to the demo, but I'm actually really, really disappointed in The Dealer. Her vocals just don't hold up imo. Actually has me really worried for this project.... :sorry:

I really love the high parts about the wine and sun down. She sounds natural with no help with computers. I also liked the higher more passionate final chorus. It's a very unique and interesting song. The folks that dont like over production should like this
