Best production ?

So, with a new album pending......Who do you think is the best producer of Stevie's work, Lindsey or Dave ?
Further comments can be added at a later date.

They both have had their hits and misses with Stevie. Generally, I'd say I have more confidence in Lindsey's overall taste level, although given what he did to Without You, which is the most current example we have to go on, my feelings may be completely unfounded.

I like what Dave Stewart has done for Stevie but if I had to vote it would be Lindsey. At the end of the day Stevie's Fleetwood Mac tunes with Lindsey behind the controls is the best (IMO)

BlueDenimLamp 08-03-2014 11:04 AM

I think with Dave producing Stevie's FM tracks (and yes I know nothings been announced yet, but Stevie has said she will not do another project, solo or Fleetwood Mac without him) we will get the best of both worlds...

Richard Dashut/Ken Caillat? They made her music atmospheric without being soupy & crisp without being sharp.

Lindsey
Unfortunately she will not listen to him.

I think I'm one of the few people that completely loved the production and effects on SYW. I think Lindsey did an amazing job, and I love that it continued into EP (clearly, I am also the only person that likes the new version of Without You more than the old one).

He did do an amazing job. He gets the blame for everything. Without u was great. Her voice on it was not however.

It was lost in the mix, but I remember it being that way in the old BN version too. It doesn't sound off key or anything to me.

The vocal track is LB's doing it sounds like he was playing with the speed of the vocal track and or pitch...Dave won't do that....

He handled the vocals correctly. Classic song.

No it is her voice which doesn't sound rested. Don't think he is responsible for her pitch. He was looking out for best interest. I doubt Dave would of turned song like Gypsy into hits.

We will find out what Dave can do with FM in the spring...

I actually think the problem with the vocal blend on "Without You" is more to do with Lindsey's voice than Stevie's or the actual production (which, alas, I concede was awful). Whilst I agree Stevie isn't at her best on this recording, Lindsey sounds shrill and off-key. Just my opinion mind - I am respectful of the fact that others really dig it.

Personally, I think he'll work out quite well, considering the whole British/American connection, but I think the styles of music from Dave and Lindsey differ slightly for Stevie's songs, so could possibly disagree. I personally think Dave and Christine would work well together, but that's just my guess.

Maybe you are right perhaps it's Lindsey's vocal...To me it sounds like the fault is intentional since LB has been playing with track speed since Tusk...I prefer the Dave produced harmonies on "Soldiers Angel" over the LB produced "Without You" harmonies...

Umm didn't Lindsey produce Soldier Angel?

I think the problem with Without You is just that its a boring song...

According to the "IYD" credits Lindsey's involvement with production was zero...

No she already explained he didn't get it, she had to get Lindsey. He was the only person who got it.

Lindsey played guitar and sang harmonies nothing more, read the liner notes...Stevie called LB because she knew he would know what to do with the guitar parts...

It is the best produced song on the album and he made it happen. His playing is the most important part.

I hope not. A Fleetwood Mac album with Dave Stewart producing -- probably a good time
for Stevie to leave. I'm sure Christine and Lindsey hit it out of the park. They didn't need her for Tango.

Phil 08-03-2014 10:41 PM

Yeah, dare I say it, "Without You" is pretty boring. Whilst the original demo is certainly superior to the 2013 version, it's still kind of bland. I actually always assumed it was a Lindsey composition until last year.
"Soldier's Angel" has a better production than "Without You", but as dull as "WY" may be, it towers over the atrocious "SA" song-wise. Hope I don't offend anyone with these comments.

I'm pretty sure I can disagree with you without getting offended. :D

Great nuanced observation. I agree.

Another time, another place. Tango was a different era, different circumstances.

Do we have any idea how he will work/assimilate with the band? Will Dave only be involved with the production of Stevie's songs? If so, this sounds similar to Christine's situation related to her songs on Time.

Are we even positive that Dave will actually produce Stevie's songs on the new Mac album? I know she has said in the past that she would like him to do so...but the woman has said MANY things that have never come to fruition.

I just don't see Lindsey or Mick being cool with letting an "outsider" (essentially) coming in and producing only her songs on this album, when basically Lindsey (hopefully) will be producing the rest of the album.

My wishful brain, however, still hopes they'll let Dashut/Caillat produce for them again someday.

No we are not positive and Stevie may have changed her tune when she heard what Lindsey and Christine came up with.
