Sorcerer - Your favorite version?
What's your favorite of "Sorcerer"?
I tried to keep this poll simple by only providing four options and I hope I got all the years right:rolleyes: My favorite version is from Trouble In Shangri-La. I love when Sheryl Crow chimes in at the end and it has the right amount of aggressiveness! Absolutely dislike the version by Marilyn Martin... it's too mellow, almost sounds like a hymn, every time she sings "Sorcerer...". Second best version is the Buckingham Nicks demo. The ending especially, right before it fades out completely and they're screaming "lady from the - MOUNTAAAIINN!!!" Great! |
I chose the 1984 Marilyn Martin version. I just love Stevie's sultry backing vocals on that one.
|
The Buckingham Nicks and TISL versions are both impressive, but I prefer the Marilyn Martin version. I just wish Stevie had recorded this version for The Wild Heart album.

There is only one great version and it is Marilyn Martin's version.
|
I like all of them...except the Soundstage one. My favorite of the options provided would be the TISL version. But my *real* favorites are the live versions recorded in 1974. Like this one:

I like all the versions, too, but I voted for Buckingham Nicks--those VOICES. My gosh. So beautiful.

Hands down the Buckingham Nicks demo. But more than that, I love the LIVE version that they performed at their many Alabama shows. Those live versions trump everything else.
I love both the TISL version and the Streets Of Fire version equally, but for different reasons. Soundstage version is CRAP! In fact, every live version that Stevie has done from the TISL tour on has been CRAP! I remember getting so excited when I found out it was going to be in the TISL tour set, and so let down when I finally heard her perform it. I don't think she's confident enough to do falsetto live on stage anymore, which sucks. |
I love the production on Marilyn Martin's version of "Sorcerer," and have often wondered if there's a version in the vaults somewhere with Stevie singing lead. Her background vocals are wild & wicked, so I can just imagine how awesome a lead vocal would have/could have been.
That said, I voted for the 'TISL' version. Sheryl's production stayed very true to the folkiness of the original demo, and Stevie's latter-day voice added so much more emotional depth to the lyrics. |
Love Marilyn's voice on this. She takes this song to a new place. I love Diane Lane but she could of done a better job lip-synching. |
By the way, the Streets of Fire soundtrack is a really good soundtrack. It's worth every penny. You might want to check it out.

It was a toss up for me between Buckingham/Nicks version and Marilyn Martin. I love both. I picked Marilyn Martin though. I really didn't care for Stevie's solo versions at all.

Buckingham Nicks version, particularly live. Their voices are so gorgeous on it.
|
The original Buckingham Nicks gets my vote although I like the song in each interpretation. I thought Marilyn Martin did a great job and Stevie's backing vocals were spectacular. The TISL version was also a great surprise when Stevie kept the high notes, but even without them in the live versions, it still sounds great. Wouldn't it be great if some tapes surfaced with the Mac working on the song for the White Album (where it should have been placed)?
|
Gotta go with TISL version. Stevie's voice on the Buckingham Nicks demo is much better (obviously; she's a lot younger there) but TISL's 'Sorcerer' is graced with a great, great track, Sheryl's excellent harmony vocal and Stevie is still very much in fine voice, particularly on the verses.
|
The voices on the Buckingham Nicks demo (and live cuts from that time) push it over the top for me, but I also love a lot about the TISL version. I think I prefer the high harmony in the chorus over the lower melody, so when Stevie takes that part in the old demo and she sings the hell out of it, I really enjoy that more than in the TISL version where Sheryl Crow takes the high part at a softer volume. But otherwise I love them both, the dusty stompy pace of the BN version and the more liquid cool of the TISL version.
|
I voted for TISL but maybe I should have voted for soundstage. I think her voice had passion although not as smooth as the others. I can totally see how people would find her voice jarring, but I think she rocked the ending especially. Plus I loved Waddy's guitar licks. He really does add more to the live shows. Revamping the old songs.

The Buckingham Nicks demo and live performances from their tour.
