Revised Alternative Album Titles

Here is a revised list of album titles. I used some of your suggestions.

Jondalar 06-24-2014 04:22 PM

Most of these would sound alright with Songs from the Vault after the title, so that shouldn't be a big deal.

Sanctuary: Songs from the Vault
All the Beautiful Worlds: Songs from the Vault
Forest of Black Roses: Songs from the Vault
Mistress of My Fate: Songs from the Vault
Night Gallery: Songs from the Vault…………………….

I actually had a strange dream a few weeks back that this album was going to be called, "Of Memories, Earthquakes & Flashes: Songs From The Underground". It's from a line from "Forsaken Love". I have no idea why I dreamed "Underground" instead of "Vault". Probably because I was a huge fan of that website, "The Stevie Nicks Underground" for a long time. Loved it! You know what they say about dreams, though. ;)

I had another friend tell me recently that she thought, "The Keeper Of The Time" would have been a good title. I thought that one was pretty cool as well. :)

Ooh, I like the title Sanctuary! Seems pretty appropriate- not only is it named for a song, it could infer that these songs have been in her sanctuary for decades. Or that you'll find sanctuary in the music. :D

I think I may be alone in this, but I sincerely hope "Songs From The Vault" is not incorporated into the final title. We already know the track-listing will be comprised of old tracks and God knows, Stevie will undoubtedly bang on about this during promotional interviews once the album is released, but this will effectively be a new album when it is released.
Apart from sounding tacky, my real problem with this proposed sub-title is that it is inaccurate as these are current recordings and should be treated as such. It might be appropriate if Stevie was simply issuing the original demos as they were recorded way back when, but that is not the case with this album. All of her solo albums have included a few "vault" tracks and yet that didn't prevent them from being received as new works. I understand that this is the first time that a solo album has been solely comprised of old songs, but they have been newly arranged, performed, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered.
I just think that referring to this album as a collection of "vault" songs sends out the wrong message and also implies that Stevie is out of fresh ideas (ie creatively bankrupt). Of course, this could be the case, but I'd prefer she didn't promote the fact.
You know, if the timing of this album is about contractual obligations, then it's likely that the idea to record "vault" songs was due to getting it done quickly more than anything else (ie not necessarily as a "love letter to the fans"). The songs had already been written and even with current revisions, this allows for super fast recording. All of this leads me to think that Stevie does have new compositions - possibly even a whole album's worth - but the narrow window of opportunity before the Mac tour forced a change of plans. Even though the IYD album was recorded reasonably quickly by Stevie's standards, it still took the better part of a year to have it fully realised. What's different about this latest album is that Dave is actually on board over consecutive weeks/months as opposed to reconvening for studio sessions over scattered timeframes. The momentum this allows is exciting to me.
In any case, I think this NEW album should be recognised as just that - not a retrospective, but something newly conceived (in terms of arrangements/production) and recorded. Hope this makes sense.

I guess I put up some good titles. Results are very spread out.

I am not a fan of Sanctuary. It reminds me of Logan's Run.

And it's sort of bland, being just one word. It's just a thrown out with zero creative/emotional impact. Thud!

I agree with all of this.

You make some very solid points. In our insular world of obsession for Stevie, most of the general public and casual fans are/or were completely unaware of her vast underworld of songs. Essentially, these are new songs. Only in the age of the internet and social media (or as Stevie hilariously recently referred to it: Space Face) did the general public become acquainted with them.

That was my immediate reaction. The subtitle should be dropped. Songs from the Vault sounds too much like Tales from the Crypt. There's no reason that the albums should immediately be aged in the casual listener's mind, before they've even heard it.

None of the above titles seem quite right for this new album, even though I like a lot of them  24 Karat Gold is starting to grow on me, and seems the most suitable from the choices above. I just keep thinking there must be something better... I just don't know what. I'm enjoying reading people's suggestions. Keep them coming :)

I feel the same. But not that it even matters; we have no ultimate control or influence. Perhaps the title will reference a lyric line. But I don't think they have the intuitiveness to think of that.

We may have influence. Pretty sure Crystal Visions came from here.

On June 26th, Dave referred to Stevie's new album "24K Gold". I don't know if he was abbreviating the title in this instance, but hopefully the "Songs From The Vault" sub-title has been dispensed with...

I also like the idea of Call On Me For Magic, but I doubt that song will make the final cut.

san-l-bar 07-02-2014 02:10 PM

The problem I have with the words "24 Karat Gold" is that it ends up sounding like another greatest hits package. Like 24 songs that went Gold on the charts, which these are not. I feel that the title should reflect her Stevie-ness and reflect how rare they are like "A RARE TYPE OF MAGIC". How's that for a title?

BLY 07-02-2014 02:28 PM

Songs From the Vault fits the bill.

I feel exactly the same about that title. It sounds like the title they would use on a collection of songs repackaged and sold by Time/Warner on a late night TV infomercial.

Using the word Gold implies an oldie/greatest hits collection, which is not appropriate for an album of new material. I'm not much of a fan of album titles that insinuate grandeur; it's sort of like bragging, and perhaps sets the bar too high. It reeks of egomania.

I really liked it when Stevie put out her first compilation album and titled it Time/Space. It was both creative and intriguing. I assume that was her idea.
