Stevie to be honored as BMI icon

Did not know where to put this but this is great news for me. Stevie getting a lot of newfound recognition. I feel she is long overdue. Just my opinion.

Great news! I love Barbara Cane's description of Stevie :blob2:

BMI Icons are selected because of their unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers. As a BMI Icon, Stevie Nicks will join elite ranks that include Paul Simon, Carole King, David Foster, John Fogerty, Kris Kristofferson, the Jacksons, Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Bee Gees, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Brian Wilson, Carlos Santana, Dolly Parton, and others.

"Stevie Nicks is an extraordinary songwriter and pedigree artist of stunning genius and unwavering grace, on and off the stage. She has defined an era of pop and rock culture around the world with her brilliance and unforgettable magnificence," said Barbara Cane, BMI Vice President & General Manager, Writer/Publisher Relations, Los Angeles.

It is pretty vindicating after all these years to see Stevie finally gaining respect & stature in the industry. She never really received critical respect throughout her career, and was entirely written off by the mid 1990s. Some time in the past ~5 years, she's suddenly gaining icon status in the industry, though. It's a bit of an odd & abrupt change, but I'm digging it all the same. I fully credit the rise of the internet generation & culture. Suddenly, everyone can express their geekiest, nerdiest interests, and find tons of support from their peers who agree. It's been like 1 big coming out fest for Stevie fandom the past several years. I love it, and am so glad she's around to witness it.

 Well said! I remember back in the early to mid 80's my friends making fun of me over being a Stevie fan. Even radio Dj's would crack jokes online about not understanding her lyrics or pronunciation while singing. Today, I hear people praising her career, her songwriting and her live performance. What I like best is the younger generation is really embracing her now. Rock on Stevie!!

lulu28 03-31-2014 11:45 AM

This makes me so happy for her!!

I have been listening to a bunch of her older music on something called http://www.last.fm/music/Stevie+Nicks/+videos, some I have never heard before and I am more in love with her voice and her music now than when I was younger. "A Thousand Days," "Some Kind of Woman," and "Two Kinds of Love," which she sings as duet and starts out and seems to be not so good but then I really loved the sound of it. Just thought to mention. The difference in her voice is quite noticeable over the years but in my opinion if you love her voice, you love her voice and singing no matter the transformation. I don't talk or sing like I used to either.

It's about freaking time. All the music she written over the past 40 plus years she should get recognized.

Who will be involved in the all-star tribute ? Sheryl Crow I would think offhand. Maybe Natalie Maines.

I'm supposing the dreaded Lady Antebellum would have to loom large... Stevie certainly doesn't choose her company well these days.

The BMI tweet...

Hopefully the musical tribute for Stevie and her music will be something along the lines of The Kennedy Center Honors as opposed to one of those wretched Grammy tributes...

It would be nice if some of her peers performed some of her songs...I wonder if any of her band mates will attend...

I think whoever does this tribute should do a medley of her lyrical high points:

A nice " when I see you again, desert angel, cheaper then free into the forgotten chimpanzee" four pack to really drive home her lyrical genius.

When I see you again would be the perfect closer too. The finale if you will. Every one who wants to honor her can just shout out a "wasamattababy" right down the line. Sheryl can start then Courtney love, Natalie maines, all 3 me,bets of lady antebellum And fu** it, anyon member of the audience can just jump on stage for a record setting amounts of wasamattababys in a 5 minute span.

That sound you hear is Lindsey Buckingham choking on his own tongue…..

I'm glad she's getting the recognition, and it's well-deserved. I think Stevie herself has been working to ensure her "icon" status and preserve her legacy these past several years. She's just been very visible...the American Idol and Voice appearances, Glee, Sound City, Oprah's LifeClass, popping up to sing duets with Adam Levine, etc. She's made a conscious effort these past few years, and it appears to be paying off.

I really hope they don't do freaking Landslide. This would be a nice opportunity to showcase Stevie's lesser known songs, or the ones she doesn't do live anymore (which are many!)

The chances that Antebellum will attempt Rhiannon are almost 1200%...Hopefully Vanessa Carlton will do a great piano version of "Beauty And The Beast" or "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You"

If "Landslide" must be included then it should be performed by (dodges flying bricks) the Dixie Chicks only because their version garnered Stevie a lot of attention....

This is from her Wikipedia page...The Dixie Chicks covered her 1975 classic "Landslide", which became a Top 10 hit (#1 on the Adult Contemporary chart) and a No.1 Hit on the Country Chart. This cover also earned her a BMI Songwriters Award in 2003 when it won "Song of the Year" (the award is given to the songwriter of the track, regardless of the performer). According to BMI, "Landslide" also earned Nicks the 35th Robert J. Burton Award as "Most Performed Country Song of the Year". This distinction is given to the song tallying the most feature US broadcast performances during the eligibility period. Included on the Dixie Chicks' platinum Monument album Home, "Landslide" was a Country, Adult Top 40, Hot 100 and AC Billboard charts smash
