So here's the lead up to the demise of their relationship through Lindsey's eyes- Monday Morning was written in the BN days. “Monday Morning is a precursor. Nothing definitive has happened between me and Stevie- only the feeling that something is not quite right. You cut to two years later- and all sorts of things have happened. Stevie has moved away from me ah emotionally, she’s ahh been unfaithful, she’s ahh come back, she’s ahh gone through a whole evolution of of experiences unique to herself that that have nothing to do with me, during the touring that happened with Fleetwood Mac after the first album. You know, so you’re talking about a long period of time of sort of a slow death, of estrangement, of a lot of, you know, we were not really a couple by the time that song was written. Ah we were still, there was still a lot of love and we would sort of come back and go away and come back but basically you know you’re talking about a situation during the making of Rumours which was very painful for me. Working with someone that I was still in love with, who was, didn’t want to be with me and yet me having to do the work for her, having to produce hits for her, having to see her everyday, not being allowed the necessity- I won’t say the luxury- it is a necessity- of of of physical distance in order to get closure. Um, the the compartmentalizing of emotions that had to follow in that situation.”

Newsweek magazine printed an article in the May 10 1976 issue about the band that said they were in the middle of recording their next album (Rumours) and it seemed likely to survive the breakup of Nicks and Buckingham's relationship 2 weeks prior. (We don't know exactly when the story was written vs when it was published). This would put the Sausalito breakup ~early '76.
Stevie's affair with Don Henley was somewhere during this time frame. And Sara reportedly was written in 1976, per the whole lawsuit where another woman claimed to have written it. |

Lindsey and Stevie broke up after the making of Rumours (Mid 76)
Sara was written at the end of the Making of Rumours (Mid 76) Don and Stevie started to go out (Early 76) Go Your Own Way was written (Late 75) |

After they joined FM, I think they got separate apartments. She says that "and I had a nice apartment" once they got a little money. So, I think that although he might have kept the place they had shared together with a roommate that she moved out once they started earning some dough. On the other hand when she talks about Go Your Own Way she says, "Oh it bugged me terrible. And I had to listen to it every night and sing along with it. It would just put me right back in the place where Lindsey and I were when he wrote that song, back to our apartment where he was really angry with me. It was like I had to revisit the world of the big fight every time he sang it." So, I got the impression he was sitting on the floor writing it even before FM and that he probably kept fiddling with the thing or adding new parts to it right on through being on the road with FM. When he mentions it's origin, I would agree that they were definitely on the road by that time, but I think it may have been conceived when they were still stuck in an apartment together, based on her comments. Actually I'd nitpick your post just to say Stevie and Lindsey broke up after the Sausalito portion of the recording of Rumours (the basic tracks) which was the first part of '76; they kept working on the album in LA and elsewhere the rest of 76 taking time away to play live over the summer months and going back into the studio after that. The album was supposed to be finished and released fall 76 by some accounts but wasn't actually released til Feb 77. As your timeline shows, they had been apart some time by then. |

"These Strange Times" was written by Mick and Ray Kennedy.
"Running Through The Garden" was written by Stevie, Ray Kennedy, and Gary Nicholson. Thing is, according to Wikipedia, they were two different Ray Kennedys. |

Go Your Own Way was performed on the White Album tour. However it only had the 1st verse, repeated twice. The shackin' up verse was added after they broke up it seems....

Bear with me for a moment. I think the biggest FLEETWOOD MAC TRICK of all is the departure of Christine McVie and the speculation of what will be her subsequent "return" to the band in 2014.
Allow me to be clear, I have no doubt that Chris left in 1998 solely because she was tired of the endless road of touring. Yes, I can even buy the fact that, for a few minutes, she wanted to live a "quiet English country life". However, I am starting to suspect that the band has been discussing her eventual "return" for well over 5 years now. This has been a calculated and shrewd business move. The band knows that they stand to make millions for a "reunion" tour with ALL 5 MEMBERS from the Rumours band. I think they have been teasing us for longer than we know; first by talking to the press stating that Christine is "DONE", then throwing bait into the water to keep us on the edge of our seat. Touring in 2009 and 2013 without her contributes to the BUILD UP of "THE RETURN" of our songbird. |

"August 24, 1977...One more time, on the plane. As usual, Lindsey is his usual asshole self. I am slowly coming to the conclusion that Lindsey and I are at an end. So sad to see good love go bad." "Lindsey and I had been going together from about 1971 to 1976. But we never really broke up until that moment [his leaving in 1987]." Asked when she knew the romance was really over, Nicks said, "The day his first child was born. I knew that was it ... that was the definitive thing." "'There’s nothing going on between you and me except that there will always be something going on between you and me. Until the day we die.’ Seventeen and sixteen. We’ve been together that long. There’s not many people that we have known as long as we’ve known each other. Mick and I are friends in a way that Lindsey and I could never be friends. We’re just best friends. Our relationship didn’t last a long time, Mick’s and mine. It was a year. ....and we dovetail from her and Mick's relationship - not friendship - into her and Lindsey's, an interesting comparison here, I think... And Lindsey’s and mine’s relationship lasted from when we first met in 1968 and I joined his band up until now." |

how did Beach Boys reunion tour go saleswise, couple of years ago? |

Christine: Mick, I'm getting somewhat tired of the English Rose Country Life. I may a be little rusty, but I would love to play live again. Mick: Great !! When can you start, love? I'm on speed dial with the promoters right now ! We're gonna make a gazillion dollars when this news goes to press! I'm thinking a large scale world tour that will go on at least a year and a half. We'll play all dates in the U.S. at least twice, Europe, Australia and Asia. Christine: Well, hold on just a minute, I didn't say on that grand of a scale. I'm just getting used to my Xanax prescription for fear of flying. I might be hooked by the time the tour ends. Why don't you guys hit the road without me for a spell, make a few million, throw the punters a bone or two, drop some hints, and I'll be in for the next go round. I can't promise you that I'll tour FOREVER, but I'm in for ONE MEDIUM LENGTH TOUR. Lindsey: "SHE CAN'T JUST COME AND GO !!" (was actually stated by him) Mick: Oh, you mean we can tour back to back....make twice the money in half the time?? Interesting, I never liked taking 5 year breaks between tours. Narrator: Do you think all those "casual fans" who already bought tickets to the 2013 tour would SIT OUT a chance to see the return of Christine ?!?! I think not. The "Chris Reunion Tour" will outsell anything they've done in the past 10 years. They know Chris' shelf life is not to continue touring forever, they've got one shot with her. It's like using your chips in a poker game. |

I'm guessing she jammed a little with Mick's band when they were practicing for their show, and she decided afterwards that she might want to at least try playing live. So she did and enjoyed it more than she thought she would, and then, in L.A., after hanging out with everybody and having a good time, offered to do the London shows. Apparently, she was on the road with them for the European leg, enjoyed being on the road, realized that she wanted back, and expressed interest in returning full-time to everybody. The only two snags were John's cancer and the fact they were contracted to do a few more shows in which she was not (hence Lindsey's reluctance to have her back AT THAT POINT). I really think it's THAT simple. Quote:

First time I was in the audience when they played it in concert was Thanksgiving night 1975 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Lindsey even introduced it as being "their first public performance of our new song...we haven't titled it yet". HAVEN'T TITLED IT YET??? WHAT ELSE ARE YOU GOING TO CALL THE SONG?? DUH!!! |
