philip seymour hoffman found dead-
overdose , feel bad for his girlfriend and their children

I read about this earlier... apparently he was a heroin addict who had been clean for 23 years, and then relapsed within the past year before entering rehab. It's always such a shame when we lose someone as talented as Philip- he was without a doubt one of the premier actors of his generation. I just can't ever imagine why anyone would touch heroin- it has claimed so many lives. :distress:

Philip Seymour Hoffman was an overrated actor--who did to Capote what Blanchett did to Hepburn. I'm surprised to read that it was only recently that he returned to heroin. I used to see him around the Village years ago, and he always looked like a homeless person. I'm sorry for his kids and for what may have been a deep well of pain he was treating with heroin. I just wish that as an artist he hadn't made so many nihilistic films that promoted hopelessness.

I can't think of anything I've seen him in other than Doubt, where he struck me as very capable. But I'm certainly used to hearing his name out in the world. Startling and saddening news, indeed. |
Oh no - how sad. I watched Jack goes Boating just last week - he acted in it, and directed it. I really enjoyed it and thought it was a great film (good soundtrack too). :(

The guy I liked to hate.
I guess that made him a good actor. |

I've liked every movie Hoffman was in, that I've seen - because he was a great actor - but I never really much liked *him*. His presence in a cast usually elicits a groan from me. Much like Johnny Depp.

Because it makes you feel absolutely incredible. Not condoning it, nor have I actually done it but I have done things in the same family that are 1 tenth the strength of heroin and can just understand the desire to feel that good. The risk scares me away. But the risks don't scare everyone away. Again not condoning just giving you a "why" louie |

I don't understand it either. He must of had a death wish. I think a lot of people hope to die by accident. |
I totally get it. People get into mindsets where they don't think long-term because their lives and mental states are such that it's just depressing for them, so they go into short-term-gratification-only mode, and try things that are awesome for a short while without worrying about the horrifying payback to come. It happens all the time. And it's very sad. But it does make sense to me. If you don't get it, it probably means you're a sweet and good person with a reasonably happy life. Cherish that.

This was such a huge loss. :( PSH was a great actor. He was terrific in The Savages, Boogie Nights, Almost Famous, etc.

Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, River Phoenix, Cory Monteith, John Belushi, Dee Dee Ramone, Howie Epstein, Chris Farley, Chris Kelly, Brad Renfro, and now Philip Seymour Hoffman. ...These are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. I watched a segment last night on the "heroin epidemic." Appareantly heroin kills half of it's users. HALF. That's astounding. And usage of the drug has doubled in the past 5 years. :distress: |
Not that I condone heroin usage, but I think the "KILLER" isn't so much the heroin itself, but what the pushers/traffickers use to cut it with..arsenic, rat poison, etc.
From reading Keith Richards' Life, he said he's survived because 1) due to England's social medicine, he registered with the government that he's an addict, so he can get medical grade pure heroin directly from "National Health" instead of having to risk buying the cut-up stuff off the street (He also said that the couple of times that he got stuff from "the street", he was extremely paranoid about doing it); and 2) he didn't ABuse it. He would use just what he needed to get to a certain "high" and that was it. Instead of taking another hit when he started coming down (and repeat over & over), he would just ride the one hit through to its conclusion. Then maybe go a couple of days before doing it again. As opposed to most addicts who are looking for the next hit just a few minutes after doing one, until they eventually OD. But, still, it is sad to lose another celebrity to the drug. As with Mental Health, maybe the Medical Complex should delve a little deeper into pain, pain medication & pain relief and look for alternatives to the Narcotic family of pain medication as pain relief. |
