RIAA Certification
I think we have discussed before. Who determines how often to count sales and recertify? I find it hard to believe that Rumours has not sold a million more records since 2003. If it needs to be requested by the band, why wouldn't they have some of their stuff counted again?
|
Now that I read that stat from Amazon (which just started in 1995) saying that Rumours was a Top Ten best seller of all time in Amazon sales, then I'd definitely agree with you that the album has sold a few million more in recent years.

I think that the album sells a considerable amount of copies per year. Soundscan, which is active from 1991, traces record sales and all that stuff. I would like to know their actual sales, of all their albums. |
The independent audit required to gain RIAA certification/recertification for an album has to be paid for by the label -- this can sometimes cost many thousands of dollars. If an artist isn't actively promoting a release at that time, the minimal additional press exposure for the certification may not be deemed a worthy expense by the label, which is probably why you haven't seen Rumours get recertified (and why Landslide hasn't been certified, etc.).

Can someone please contact the RIAA or do something to get FM's and Stevie's albums and singles' certifications updated. 'Bella Donna' is AT LEAST 5xplatinum (currently 4x), the 1975 Fleetwood Mac album was certified 5xplatinum in 1986 and needs to be certified probably around 7xplatinum. I could name pretty much all of Stevie's and FM's catalogue but there are some definite updates that need to be done.

The Rumours reissue from last year hit #3 on the UK charts and spent 4 weeks in the top 20, so that's another chunk of sales. Most new artists would kill for 4 weeks in the top 20 these days.
The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac is currently celebrating it's 328th week in the UK album chart and is sat at #45. Rumours is up this week by 121 places to #60, having spent 282 weeks in the UK album chart. Sourced from http://www.officialcharts.com/albums-chart/ |
The Rumours reissue spent 6 weeks in the top 20 and 22 weeks in the top 75 (currently at #60). It also sold 168,000 copies in 2013 which was enough for it to feature on the year-end album list. The album is extremely close to achieving a 12xplatinum certification in the UK as it only needs to sell approximately 15,000 copies to reach 3.6 million in sales :)

The artists might have some pull if they cared about the numbers. How much pull do they have if they aren't under contract? And how many really believe the 40 million+ number for Rumours? Not I, said the cat. |
Saw this on Billboard today for the Top 200 Albums Chart.
Fleetwood Mac- Rumours - #59 |
37 years after its release, it is the 59th best selling album in the US. Pretty spectacular.

I know I've already expressed my opinion about getting Stevie's and FM's albums and singles certifications' updated but 'Rumours' should DEFINITELY be certified 20xplatinum by now, or even higher....

http://www.greasylake.org/the-circui...a-album-sales/ These are my opinions of what should be updated. Crystal Visions = Gold Fleetwood Mac = 6x Platinum Bella Donna = 5x Platinum Say You Will = Platinum Greatest Hits = 9x Platinum |

I'm guessing you're talking about digital sales. If so, it was certified gold on October 5, 2009. I can't imagine it's sold an additional half million or more to reach platinum. Some are guilty of doing record company addition. For example... FM White Album (Landslide) 5 million + FM Live 1980 - - (Landslide) 1 million + FM The Dance - -(Landslide) 5 million FM Single CD... So on and so on. That's the only way I can see it being multi-platinum. |
If you want to know sales guys, just ask me!
I know for a fact that as of February 2013, just after the Budweiser advert featuring the song, Landslide sold 1,315,950 digital copies in the US. I would think that that figure would be over 1.5 million by now which means it is certainly eligible for a Platinum certification. Also, in my opinion, the 1975 Fleetwood Mac album should be certified AT LEAST 7xPlatinum, Greatest Hits 9xPlatinum maybe even higher, Say You Will Platinum, and as we all know The Very best of needs a 3xPlatinum certification as it has sold over 1.7 million copies and is a 2CD album so they count them twice. As far as Stevie's stuff goes, Bella Donna should be certified AT LEAST 5xPlatinum maybe more, Crystal Visions I know for a fact sold 505,512 copies in April 2014, and Edge of Seventeen sold 505,673 copies in May 2012. If anyone has any questions they want to ask me regarding FM or Stevie sales then don't hesitate to ask or post on here because I'm a sales freak! :) |
Thanks James89. How do you know such stuff? That is amazing.

It could of been another number 1 hit for FM.I never understand why it was never released and hit the charts then. |
Speaking of numbers...one album I can NEVER find any numbers on is Christine McVie's 1984 solo album. I was hoping someday to FINALLY see it certified gold.
Anybody? |

Christine's albums' chart run is as follows: 70-42-35-33-*26*-26-26-35-36-56-63-73-73-84-84-83-81-108-113-127-138-147-183.
Now, I have no evidence but a run like that would surely mean sales of more than 500,000 copies. I read somewhere that Mick's album The Visitor sold approximately 300,000 copies and it reached #43 but didn't have the longevity of Christine's album. Not really sure why they never certified her album gold. If anyone knows what sales figures were like in the mid 80's, please share with us because I've seen many articles which state that sales were down in the early 80's which is why Mirage, #1 for five weeks and #2 for a further eleven weeks, only sold 2 million copies. So, Christine's album spent three consecutive weeks at #26. To be at #26 in 1984, were sales around 50,000? Something like that? I don't know, I'm just guessing but if anyone has a rough idea then please share. |

And that "1,315,950" figure, surely you don't mean that amount was sold in a week or so after the commercial aired? One word about SoundScan. They don't count every record sold. And the RIAA records of sales is very incomplete for every artist. |

The commercial was a massive success...There's a whole thread on it Budweiser Super Bowl ad with Landslide |

That was in Spain. I bet Lindsey made even more for Holiday Road in that commercial. He will make 20x more just from the commercial than all the downloads. |

Lindsey got big bucks for use of both commercials. Funny how Holiday Road never even cracked the top 40 but he has made more money off it today then if it went to #1 in 1983. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03Crk5dQ8VY |

Vacation movie (Holiday Road) scene https://youtu.be/HWfATSKvHGo?t=37s "Big Bucks"? Just how much are Lindsey, Christine and Stevie being paid for the use of their songs? Not sure about CM and didn't she sell the copyrights to her songs when she left FM so does she receive anything for the dancing horse thing. We know that Stevie was paid in the high 6 figures by Budweiser for Landslide... And she made Millions for the Dixie Chicks cover of Landslide... Yes Stevie got paid a lot but it also benefits the rest of the band because I'm sure some of the people also purchased the original and after hearing the FM version bought a few FM/solo records... |
You can find "Trouble" on Lindsey's "Words & Music" CD
