International premieres and stars add glitz to BIFF

Australian premieres, an international star and a rock goddess are set to wow Brisbane audiences with tonight’s program launch for the 2013 Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) program.

Arts Minister Ian Walker said BIFF would host the Australian premiere of international production The Railway Man starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth on 13 November.

“The Railway Man is a great way to start BIFF – it was filmed locally in Ipswich and around the Gold Coast and tells the story a former British Army officer captured by Japanese forces in World War Two, and sent to a POW camp on the Thai-Burma Railway,” Mr Walker said.

“Music fans will also be delighted to see American rock royalty Stevie Nicks attend the Australian premiere of her documentary In Your Dreams, which gives an inside look at the recording of her 2011 album of the same name.”

Holy crap this is amazing. Brisbane! Of all places! I'm so there.

DoubtfulMiracle 10-23-2013 08:09 AM

And yes the Barracks is pretty much in the city - very close to the main transit station at Roma St. Some fantastic eateries around there also.

StreetAngel86 10-23-2013 06:16 PM

cactusjack 10-25-2013 03:41 AM

surprised this hasn't sold out yet, but I guess not many people know about it.

I presume the Toronto one sold out? Where else has she done these?

I live in Brisbane and so far have not seen or heard it advertised anywhere. I follow Brisbane International Film Festival on social media & even they have been quiet about it.

I think also the 3pm start makes it difficult for those who work office hours to attend. The tickets are selling though. At least 130 seats have sold so far.

Sorry. I shouldn't have stated this as a fact. I am only surmising.

I bought my ticket on Tuesday and got seat 40. A few of my friends then said that they wanted to go too. We have all purchased our tickets separately. Ticket purchased Wednesday - seat 70. 2 tickets purchased together early yesterday - seats 115 & 116. Then the ticket purchased last night was seat 131.

I couldn't find a seating plan either. I go to Palace Cinemas frequently and have never been allocated a seat. The theatres are not massive either so it should be quite intimate & FUN!

my ticket doesn't have a seat number on it  i want front row

i wasn't looking for an IYD seating plan ... just a regular one. like at our cinemas it's reserved seating  so they show the map

at least everyone wont have to line up at like lunchtime for a good seat (which i may have been willing to do ;)

mine just says AISLE A -- enter door "n" ... wtf

At all the screenings Stevie has attended, she has sat in the very last row. You still sure you want front row?

maybe i have no seat and i can just wander around and sit on the floor beside her
i emailed them. so, we shall see
and yes, i'd rather be in the front row for the Q&A

Aussie W/Heart 10-25-2013 09:09 PM

Mine just says GA general admission? WTF,

my plan was to be first in line with StreetAngel26:thumbsup:

No, they're not seat numbers but rather TICKET numbers. The row and seat boxes are empty. Just says GA seating. I am pretty sure everyone will be lining up nice and early to get a good seat. No daylight savings here so the sun is up super early...

Palace never have allocated seating. Just buy your ticket & sit where you please. I have been to BIFF screenings before and never had an allocated seat.

There is a small write up about IYD and Stevie being at the cinema in The Courier Mail today.

cactusjack 10-26-2013 01:58 AM

what the hell are you all talking about, seat numbers and aisle etc.? My tickets just have "unreserved" on them.
I should have been in front row as I bought them at 3:02pm, 2 minutes after they went on sale

StreetAngel86 10-26-2013 08:30 AM

Macfanforever 10-26-2013 11:00 AM

I Remember and know that I got my fat rear up to the front at the Jacob Burns Film Center screening in New York last year in October.

I got a wave from Stevie too.

I got printed tickets sent through the mail... maybe they say different things on different types of ticket delivery?

in any case, she may not still be coming anyway. Let's see what the tour announcement has to say in a few hours.

I thought I should strip out the barcode and stuff, but here is my ticket:

I feel the same. What a crapper.

I really hope Stevie still attends this. I know it's a bit out of her way now, but a commitment is a commitment, Ms Nicks!

Aussie W/Heart 10-27-2013 04:19 AM

Devastated !!! i have no other words: shocked::shocked::shocked::shocked:

DoubtfulMiracle 10-27-2013 04:41 AM

I think we just have to hold on to hope that this is still on. It is something Stevie's doing as Stevie, after all, and unless John's illness has literally only come up in the last couple of days, it would seem poor form from Stevie, her people and the BIFF if this was announced last week only to be cancelled in the next few days.

missundercover 10-27-2013 07:24 AM

Fingers crossed for you!

APerfectLie 10-27-2013 11:25 AM

I don't see Stevie canceling this. She always vacations to Australia and talks about how she writes a lot while she is there. My bet is that she will take a vacation in Australia since she will be there for the IYD premiere and probably write like she has never written before. This may very well end up being the catalyst for a new solo album.

I can see her cancelling, for fear of the Q&A being too problematic. She would be faced with questions about John's health, which she can't answer out of respect for his privacy, or speculations about FM's future, which would be equally uncomfortable for her.

UNACCEPTABLE
they could easily issue a disclaimer before hand saying NO Qs abt JM/FM
or take 1/2 an hour out after the session to screen Qs and give people #s
yep, i could take over running it and it will be fine
not everyone going to a STEVIE NICKS DOCU at a FILM FESTIVAL is a FLEETWOOD MAC fan;)

StreetAngel86 10-28-2013 02:24 AM

i got an email from them this morning and no mention of a cancellation
sooooooooooo thus far, so good

A week to go, and we still don't know if she's coming. Surely it must be decided by now??

Macfanforever 11-05-2013 12:32 PM

I hope she does make it to the screening for you guys.

I did not know that Live Nation was in charge of shows outside the states.
