Stevie vs Lindsey?

Ok, so I'm new to this board and I try to read up on all the great stuff u guys post. Maybe I am opening a can of worms with this question but here goes.

It seems like there are sides in the FM world, Stevie fans not liking Lindsey or Lindsey fans not liking Stevie... Like there's a team Stevie and a team Lindsey... I guess my question is why???

I'm over here like "why aren't they together!?"

Any thoughts on the matter? Like I said sorry if I opened a can if worms! :p

Are you asking about lindsey fans not being into stevie's music and vice versa, or not liking their personnas?

Also if you are talking music, I think it was very different when they started 40 years ago - they seem to have evolved into very different directions musically over the years.

I think there is also a separate question about liking or not liking people who are fans of one of the other.

getTusked 08-26-2013 08:25 AM

I think, and maybe I am perceiving it wrong, but it just seems that there are Stevie fans who just flat out don't like Lindsey! I'm not sure if its musically or about the personas. I guess it seems more against Linds than Stevie. And I would love to hear why!

Once again I know that's not the case with everyone. I just think it would be interesting to hear that debate!

CADreaming 08-26-2013 11:24 AM

Ha! Well, now you've done it! LOL.

Have to say - there's a lot more Lindsey fans who dislike Stevie for whatever reason - personal, musical, etc.

I think a lot of the fan side choosing stems way back to the past when they were still ill at each other over their break up, Lindsey not wanting to work on her songs and being resentful of her solo career, etc. Also, the fact that they are both opinionated and as Stevie says "tangle a lot" and the now infamous Destiny Rules argument over Stevie's incorrect use of a pronoun and the business stuff (which was really just them talking over each other and saying the same thing... lol). All of that leads to die-hards taking sides in addition to preferring either Stevie or Lindsey as solo artists.

Personally, I think it's obvious that no argument they ever get into will ever sever their relationship for good at this point. And, I really like their work as individual artists, but I absolutely prefer the music they do together.

BUCKINGHAM NICKS!

I am a fan of both Stevie and Lindsey. As you may guess, Lindsey is my favorite member of FM.

I have had more than one fan of Stevie's not get why I like LB. To some Stevie fans, I really think they feel that Lindsey is/was holding Stevie back. They don't always like the job Lindsey does on Stevie's songs for FM albums. One example that comes to mind is the SYW version of 'Smile At You'. I had Stevie fans telling me they hated what Lindsey 'did to it' and felt that it was better in the demo form.

By the way, I Love your screenname!

Which to me doesn't make sense when you compare to all of the other songs he molded into either hits or fan favorites.

Stevie herself has recognized this.

Well all I can say is I'm a dyed in the wool Lindsey fan. I definitely don't hide it. Doesn't mean I don't Respect Stevie. I most certainly do. It''s just what Lindsey creates appeals to me more. However back in 2011 in the battle of the new releases.....Stevie actually took it for me. So ya never can tell:nod:

Especially when Christine was in the band, there was Team Christine, too. And the Peter Green folks are every bit as diehard of cheerleaders as Stevie fans are.

I think the reason for all these camps is the fact each Mac singer/songwriter appeals to different parts of the brain, and also different personalities. People who love Lindsey tend to do so because of his masterful guitar and production skills. For Stevie fans, their love is more abstract... it's the way her lyrics & persona make you feel. Other folks are drawn to the effortless pop perfection of Christine. Then there are those who love the raw blues talent of Peter Green, and his tragic yet fascinating life story. There's something for everyone in Fleetwood Mac, hence why there are so many different factions of fans.

Not all of this is static, either. I started out 20 years ago as solely a fan of Stevie, yet I've grown to appreciate/love all 16 past & present members in their own way. I respect Lindsey much more as an artist these days than Stevie. I find Christine to be more consistent & easy to enjoy than either Stevie or Lindsey combined, too. I adore Bob Welch, and have even come to appreciate Bekka Bramlett's vocal talents. Fleetwood Mac is multidimensional; there's material for every mood, age, taste, etc. :)

Great way to put it! That is why they are so timeless...

Growing up I loved Stevie and never really knew that much about Lindsey...but now I know how much of a brilliant musician/producer he is how can you not respect him? I like a lot of Lindsey's solo stuff and Stevie's as well...I just think they are way better together :D I am def team StevieandLindsey!

With the exception of the recent Extended Play, I agree with you wholeheartedly. Soldier's Angel was evocative of the musical chemistry Lindsey & Stevie had in the 1970s... I'm not sure how just a couple of years later the EP turned out so horribly (IMO, of course).

elle 08-26-2013 06:16 PM

 name it "Stevie vs Lindsey" and you got a hot thread within hours! lol

seems pretty natural in bands with several front people or songwriters (usually a couple but can be more) to get camps of fans - just look at Beatles, Rolling Stones, Eagles... not really the same but Bon Jovi has been in the news lately... one may look at it as either natural or bad, but that's just a fact.

as someone else already said, i've noticed not only Stevie and Lindsey, but also definitely Peter Green camp (i love his music and have immense respect for him as a songwriter and guitarist but people who are strong camp PG actually seem to be the least tolerant of all FM member fans from little discussion snippets i've seen which doesn't really make sense to me?).

with their very different musical styles and emphasis these days, it makes complete sense to me that different people would like different band members. people say that Christine's music was the bridge between Stevie's and Lindsey's but i'm not actually so sure. her rumours-era music was much more pure pop than either Stevie's or Lindsey's. so i do understand that without her band is more "muscular" for lack of a better word. although i think Stevie has moved a lot to more pop / adult contemporary territory, from the days of GDW or her beautiful Tusk ballads (with the exception of bland Sara, but that was still not your run-of-the-mill song).

i've seen several FM shows this year, and compared to Lindsey's solo shows, although they put on a really great concert, i have had enough (which doesn't mean i will not be tempted to see FM again, since who knows when / whether LB will tour solo again, especially if he gets stuck with making another Mac album and we know how warped their dynamic is and how it always ends up taking time :distress:). during Lindsey solo shows, there is so much guitar virtuosity to watch that you can never get enough and you are never bored however many times you see them, plus shows are evolving and you can influence that changing of the shows. FM shows pretty much stay the same, or the parts that are "evolving" are not of that much interest to me.

i like FM because of LB, period. if he is/was not in the band, i have no interest (except PG period, but that's long gone). different parts of LB attraction include:

1) i love his music and have enormous respect for him as a songwriter / arranger / guitarist / producer;
2) his live performances are always fantastic;
3) after meeting him several times i find him to be interesting person, and from my experience really sweet to fans - whether during after-show meet&greets or audience interactions during shows;
and last and more prosaic ;):
4) on top of his musical talent he has a combination of charisma and sex-appeal that makes him very easy on the eyes.

I got to stand next to Lindsey after one of his solo concerts. We were waiting for him outside the stage door in NYC, but he didn't sign autographs and seemed visibly uncomfortable with all of the attention. It was really cool to stand next to him, see how greasy his hair looked after the show, get a sense of how he is. There was no limo. He got into a pretty normal van with his band to go to their hotel.

I know it's easier to get close to Lindsey, but I'm curious if anyone has had fan interactions with Stevie up close. She seems to avoid contact with fans and has probably increasingly avoided these encounters over the years. I mean, unlike Mick, neither her nor Lindsey are jumping to do meet and greets---only Lindsey comes off as a little more approachable, and Stevie more a diva. Is this the correct reading?

Ohhh ohh I am very interested hehe.

1)-me too me too!
2)- saw FM but not solo....do you think he will do more solo tours?
3)- ahhh! do you have any good stories?? Is he easy to talk to? Does he laugh? lol

And that is awesome about the girl with the Get Tusked shirt! I wasn't sure if he'd like anything like that but I guess it is worth a shot!

It is so interesting because I have heard Linds hating meet and greets...but if that is the case why does he do them? Just wouldn't think he would offer that if he really did not like them!

And I agree with the Stevie perception...she seems a little cold and wants nothing to do with it....but I could be wrong :)

we had bunch of descriptions in individual threads for shows / m&gs in Lindsey forum last year... i attempted to start thread where different stories and info would be combined but people were not very responsive to that one so this is all that's in one thread -

Well for me there's no Stevie vs Lindsey, I'm fan of both. My favourite member of FM is Lindsey, but that's a question of subjective feelings. Their "troublesome" relationship over the years, their different ideas in terms of musical offer, their choices, bla bla...
All of this, in my opinion, created the whole "battle of gangs".
Lindsey is the "maniacal" studio artist, Stevie the abstract, poetic one. Their different musical approach attracts people different from each other of course. Lindsey's guitar playing was one the reasons I bought a guitar many years ago, Stevie's voice or songwriting is inspirational for someone else.
But the thing that amazes me everytime is that everytime those two have released masterpieces, marvellous songs over the years.

I happened to be in the right place at the right time, when I met The Mac members on a bus of all places LOL back in 1980.
Stevie most certainly had the chance to just wave & go on their merry way, I have no doubt it was her that told the driver to STOP.. Stevie was super friendly all smiles and very chatty, on the other hand Lindsey, Mick John & Christine were not so friendly which didn't bother me as I was totally focused on Stevie for the whole time, my heart was beating so fast I thought I was really going to have a heart attack.. It was the best day ever!

So I would definitely say Stevie is NO diva when it comes to her fans, im sure many on here would vouch for that after going to the Barnes & Noble signings & also her interactions after the IYD's doco..

HelloMonster 08-27-2013 10:15 AM

I love both Stevie and Lindsey, but I like Lindsey more overall. I have been to several Lindsey solo shows, and I have never been to a Stevie solo show. Out of all of my Mac shows I saw, I only sat (stood) on Lindsey's side. (But I dressed like Stevie.)

When I had my M&G with Lindsey, I was worried he was going to be unhappy because he had just played to a dull, unenthusiastic audience. (Think older, very wealthy members of the college board type, Ben Stein-like, in a way? And this doesn't include you, jetta07! :D) The mood was just night and day different from the time I saw him before in Council Bluffs. Anyways! He was not unhappy like I thought he would be at all. He was smiling, and laughing and happily (jokingly) played along with me when I asked him to play me a song for the next time I saw his show (5 days later.) I loved every minute!

However, my dad has met Stevie before in the early/mid 80's, and he said she was not very nice, and wanted nothing to do with talking to people. He was working at the downtown airport here in Kansas City and was responsible for refueling the planes and other maintenance, and liked to say hi to celebrities passing through. I understand she was probably just tired and grumpy from traveling. He has met nicer celebrities though!

no idea whether he likes them or not. it can be anything. from what i've heard from fans who went to UTS tour especially, but also GOS, at the time he was very open to meeting fans for free before or after shows, taking photos and autographing things... and for whatever reason that was not happening nearly as much during SWS tour.

maybe he doesn't like the idea of charging people to meet him (although the charge was practically nominal, basically you paid for getting best seats at the show and talking to him after was a bonus)? or maybe, and again just speculating, as a primarily introverted person he seems to be, he may be leery of them, but once he did a few and realized he actually enjoyed it, he may have changed his mind?

either way, he certainly did a tons of them last year, spread over 3 tour legs that kept being added on separately, one after the other. so if he hated them during leg 2, you'd think he would not have them during legs 3 and 4.

This event goes down in (my) history as the coolest chance meeting ever! 2nd place belongs to ChiliD's meeting of FM at an Eric Clapton concert.

Stevie that brought me to FM.I have respect for all FM members present and past members.

I dearly miss Christine in the band.

Everybody has their favorite member of the band.

I love Lindsey. He is the best guitar player that I like along with Waddy W.

Speaking of meeting up with artists.I met up with Emmylou Harris on her bus two times. She loves Stevie and FM.

For some reason I couldn't see it!!! But I hope it has something to do with him laughing lol!

Also, thank you for sharing those meet and greet threads! I loved reading them. What I'm also impressed by is how you guys all see each other at shows (ledgies)... I think that's awesome! It's like a little LB community.

I stumbled upon your FB. Do you get paid to be an LB promoter? Because you should. Some great stuff on there! :p

LOL , I know its crazy!!

It was just an ordinary run of the mill bus, driving down a very narrow street that caught my attention. I had just happened to look up when I noticed Stevie looking at us. It was then that I ran over , knocked on the door, then it OPENED:D It was just the 5 of them sitting in separate seats at the back of the bus plus the old bus driver.. Firstly I asked the driver if I could get Stevie's Autograph, then it felt a bit weird so I was happy well actually elated that Stevie was up for a chat, & so that was enough for me..

I remember wanting to show her this beautiful little shop that sold gorgeous jewelry & magical candles that she would of loved, as the bus was parked right in front of this gift shop.. Also I almost suggested, if they would like to smoke this joint that I had in my purse.. LOL... So many if only's in just a 8 min time frame

One thing that is very different about them is the whole entourage thing. Lindsey goes out and about on his own a lot it seems, while I don't think Stevie EVER goes out solo. She's always got SOMEBODY with her. Part of that is their personalities-- Lindsey likes his alone time and Stevie seems to always need/want people around. But Stevie also identifies herself as a ROCK STAR and embraces all that goes with it-- always in a big-azz limo, entourage, stopped driving herself years and years ago, etc... Lindsey goes out alone, drives himself, goes out walking around while on tour etc. I think the entourage thing would make him totally nuts. I don't think I've EVER heard LB describe HIMSELF as a 'rock star". He doesn't stop others from saying it (interviewers etc) and I'm sure he's not above pulling rank if he wants his way about something at times, but he sees himself as an artist, a producer, a musician, not a "star".

Stevie is also more recognizeable, although I'm sure she can disguise up when she wants. I think she usually has someone with her for security, but not necessarily an entourage. For example, the snapshot a year or two ago in LA at the makeup counter, it looked like she was alone.

In Cory B's tour diary, she said Lindsey preferred to be alone and working on music. He didn't venture out much unless it was to museums.

It's funny, I've read where Stevie describes both herself and Lindsey as loners, but she does seem to be much more social. I think she has an "off" button and will go into isolation mode.

there was an article I read once about a movie star-- I believe it was Marilyn Monroe-- where a friend of hers said it was amazing how she could not be recognized if she didn't want to, that somehow she could go out and not even disguise herself, just act like a normal person and people would pass right by her and then she could just flip a sort of switch, standing there in the same plain look, not a lot of makeup or anything, not all dressed up, but if she wanted to she could just somehow exude her "Marilyn-ness" -- nothing very overt, not saying much or acting to draw attention-- but there was a magnetism she could turn on and suddenly people would start to notice her.

I just wonder if Stevie truly didn't want to be noticed if she could go unnoticed. I don't know.

I also think she got spooked early on. Some of hte band's handlers, I know John Courage for one, was a bit stern with Stevie and Christine about going out while on the road and being really careful and bad things might happen and all that....

Interesting about MM.

I've read Stevie say she does disguise herself. How hard could it be? Throw on a wig, a hat, sunglasses? She was quoted years ago when she was at the height of fame as saying it wouldn't be worth it to her if she couldn't go out antiquing on the weekends unnoticed.

I can see Stevie getting freaked out by it early though, much more than Christine.

For some reason this just made me totally laugh out loud. :D (not at you, CAD, but at Stevie)

It just sounds sooo much like one of those random things she says that seems soooo unreal. Stevie just workin' a M-F. 9-5 and then going antiquing on the weekends... when, at the height of her fame, her days/nights/weekends I'm sure were all one big blur of craziness, coke and whatever else. Ok, maybe she liked to shop for antique Tiffany lamps and stuff, but I just don't believe she went "antiquing" in the normal sense of the word, ie trolling through dusty antique shops. But who knows:shrug:

Oh, hahaha! Right! I interpreted it as in the "off" time. :D

OK, who high jacked the thread? I wrote a big long post explaining why there are Stevie, Lindsey and Chris camps and how we should all hold hands, sing kumbaya and try to get along, but when I come to post my response it's now all about meet and greets with Stevie and Lindsey !?

I love the stories, but is this a way to change the subject? I guess my post will have to wait for later :(

Haha you are right! Let's get back to the subject, I'd love to read your post!

What's funny is that I always thought the separation between fan "camps" was because of attitude rather than from a musical stand point. Like Stevie fans hating Lindsey because he didn't treat her great, or Lindsey fans thinking Stevie was a diva and took advantage of him making magic out of her songs. Or Chris fans mad that she is overlooked as the real first female of FM. Maybe I thought it was more dramatic.

Or maybe I just want to open more cans of worms :D
