Twisted
I've known this beatiful song not long ago. I heard the two different versions of it: and I thought that it could have been one a great hit, it's a shame that it is relatively unknown song. Do you think that in other times it could have been a commercial success?
What I love about this record is the chance to hear Stevie and Lindsey singing together on a excellent song. Stevie does a marvellous work at backing vocals/ harmonies almost more so than at Lead Vocals: I love the drama she imparts to "the sun goes down, crazy men, crazy women" at the end. |

I love the solo version released on Enchanted, but the film version is just-ok and I don't think made much of a splash with the general filmgoing public. I was under the impression Stevie wasn't crazy about Lindsey's involvement either.
I agree that the mid-90s just wasn't a time where this sort of folky tune would be a commercial hit, but it might've done well in earlier eras, sure. It might even do well today, if it was covered by the right artist. |

I have never heard Stevie even remotely say anything to suggest any opinion on Lindsey being on the song. The most detail was given by Lindsey in The Dance rehearsal video and it was mostly technical. She did say in her Enchanted liner notes that the movie was "her story". I've never heard how he came to be the producer or play and sing on the track, but I thought his involvement was truly appropriate. In fact, I feel the soundtrack version was an unexpected glimpse into what a current (for 1996) Buckingham Nicks would have sounded like. The bridge made the song complete and would not have been effective without Lindsey's presence - his vocals, his guitar work and his production. It's one of my favorites. |

The movie version was bland. |

I distinctly remember Stevie explaining that her choice to include the demo version of Twisted in Enchanted was because she disliked the final version of the song, and that the producers "didn't understand her vision" for it. I got the impression that Lindsey's involvement was pushed on her for commercial reasons, but that may be my own conjecture. I can't find the source or remember exactly what was said, sadly. Generally I just find the soundtrack version to sound a lot clunkier, and yes, blander. There's a heaviness to the instrumentation that doesn't fit with the song, for me. The climactic final minute of the soundtrack version is lovely, though. |
The song is featured in the movie, but only a portion of it, and it's very faint in the background. It's been too long since I've seen it to remember which scene.

I went to see this at the theater when it came out. The song was very prominent and loud. Later, was disappointed when i saw it on tv, you can barely hear it.

There's also the third version that Stevie performed live on the Enchanted tour.

She told Jim Ladd that Twister was similar: Quote:

Again I seem to have the tin ear here, and cannot see how anyone would prefer the droning and dreary Enchanted version of this to the sonically lush soundtrack version.

I really don't like the solo version. The duet is epic!

love love love Twisted Stevie and Lindsey version. love that Lindsey is singing lower harmonies there too.
tried to listen to the demo / enchanted versions several times and just couldn't get through them... they are just so disappointing and boring to me. but i'm biased of course. i guess it's a bit like all SN fans who love all her sparse demos better than recorded versions... even though i can appreciate uniqueness of her voice, slow folksy versions of her songs just don't do much for me. :sorry: now if you are talking about that rocking Smile at you... that's another story! |

The song on the Twisted Soundtrack takes that all away. It is not real or touching at all. It's just another song. |

although mitzo probably meant something more elaborate. there are singers who i would listen to reading the phone book and be absolutely happy. many people here may feel the same about SN, and considering her voice is pretty unique i guess i can understand that. but i don't feel like that about any of the FM singers. not sure what "her voice is real" on the solo but not soundtrack versions mean... is it fake on the soundtrack? |
In the movie the song is being played the first time the two main characters see each other after so much time had passed. I remember reading that Stevie said she got a copy of the script and felt that the characters in the movie reminded her of her and Lindsey and how chasing fame was like chasing tornadoes, you know it can destroy you but you can't not do it. And she commented that she wrote this whole song that would be perfect for the story and you can barely hear it in the movie.

The demo version of the song drags, and the slow deep thunk thunk thunk of the guitar and the low slow register of her voice make it sound monotone and like a bagpipe drone. Whereas there is a lot to listen to in the album version, highlighting the flexibility and expressiveness of her voice.
I am always a massive fan of Stevie's slow heartwrender ballads. This demo is not one of them. |

Sounds like another Soldiers Angel "Lindsey, I can't do this song without you" moment to me. :D |
I think the Enchanted Live 98' version trumps all album recordings of the song...

It is absolutely one of the most perfect theme songs without being direct.

I couldn't have my screen name and Not comment here. The song would have been a perfect chart topper on the new country stations back in the 90's.
I like the recorded version best, demo second, and live (solo) last. The music just adds to the beuatiful poetry that is within SN' lyrics. Another good example can be found in If You Ever Did Believe. Stevie was getting her mojo back and she often says she doesn't write hit records. With the proper promotion and channels, these two along with Sleeping Angel could have been major hits. |

EDITED TO ADD: I just realized you are probably referring to the Enchanted box set demo version. Anywho... :sorry: |
