Does Stevie need a Broaway musical?

No.

And no to all the other ideas on that website.

If Stevie wants to write original music for a musical, as Tori Amos and Dolly Parton have recently done, I won't stop her (although I don't think her writing style is suited to that at all). But yeah. I think the world has had more than enough jukebox/bio musicals for this millennium.

Macfanforever 08-16-2013 10:44 AM

I love to see one made.

Cyndi Lauper also wrote the music for a broadway musical (Kinky Boots) recently. Actually, if I recall correctly, it won Best Musical @ the Tony's this year.

KarmaContestant 08-16-2013 11:17 AM

I would say absolutely not.

I see a lot of musicals - and while some are great, a musical based on Stevie's life and career would be tacky and wretched. I can already hear the dreadful songs about doing coke in the 80's and wanting to bang Joe Walsh.

A musical made with Stevie's actual recorded music might be nice - I saw the Green Day musical last year and it wasn't awful. Stevie's got enough common threads running through her lyrics that a great story could be put together using her songs.

Dex 08-16-2013 11:23 AM

I just think all these jukebox musicals and biographical musicals are dull, cheap, lure-people-in-with-what-they-already-know money ploys, and take up space that would otherwise be used to offer truly original, interesting, and potentially exciting theatre. Broadway seems to be going more and more in this direction and I just find it sad. I don't want Stevie's name in on that action. But then, it's not up to me.

WildHearted, I was excited when I heard about Cyndi's Kinky Boots musical, but I actually recall it getting a lacklustre reception? Perhaps I'm remembering wrongly. Interesting to hear it won a Tony. Good for Cyndi.

I would love to see a musical that tells the Rhiannon story and uses all the music Stevie wrote for the ill-fated movie of same. I recently was listening to several in a row, things like Forest of the Black Roses, Three Birds etc and thought how Broadway-ish many of them sound. And how great they are and what a shame they won't get heard more widely.

But a musical of her life.... don't think so.

TotallyTusked 08-17-2013 10:25 PM

Yeah, there would be some songs of Stevie's, particularly her demos, which would be AMAZING in Broadway. Even stuff like 'Sorcerer' and 'Bella Donna.'
That said, I don't think a musical of her life would be all that good. I mean, I would go and watch it, coz I'm a Stevie fan, but I doubt other people would care too much about some 70s rockstar's life where she did way too much coke and sung songs about her boyfriend over and over again. :distress:

michelej1 08-18-2013 03:33 AM

Someone should just use her songs and create a new, fictional story with them, ala Mamma Mia. But Stevie's catalog would have better songs to begin with, so I have to assume that done right, it'd stirring, as opposed to a light comedy like Mamma Mia.

I always thought that a really well done show could be made out of the making of the Rumours album featuring the stories of the whole band at the time...

Mick already seems to have this idea in his head.

Side note: Call on Me for Magic sounds 100% broadway.

Thank you, Dex! I agree!!

FierySequences 08-19-2013 09:34 PM

I have thought of this before,,,and in some interview Mick confirmed my suspicion that he was thinking the same thing. A SN musical? Absolutly not, but an FM one??? YES!

I think with the right timing and funding, this could be a reality and I hope to submit my bid as the the musical director. Fingers crossed that this gets accomplished (with ME, of course!) LOL

PolishStevieFan 08-28-2013 07:54 AM

If Gloria Estefan has musical based on her story then why not Stevie, one of the greatest and most important rock figures of all times?

Macfanforever 08-28-2013 11:39 AM

Yes, I saw the play. I don't think I've seen the movie with Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan though.

Italian Summer seems to have been written for a musical.

Loved the play, hated the movie.

I just had this crazy idea of a musical about Stevie and Dave Stewart, and it starts with Stevie and Lindsey doing "Without You" as a demo trying to get their band started, and songs from The Tourists with Dave and Annie, then moving into Buckingham Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, as well as Eurythmics. Then we get to years later and Dave and Annie do "17 Again" about how everything in their lives had changed, and Stevie and Lindsey do "Throw Down" and we finally end up with Stevie and Dave doing "Everybody Loves You". Of course in the musical they realize their love for each other and live happily ever after. :)

pwyll 09-01-2013 02:02 PM

No. But possibly "Rhiannon, The Musical..."

Same here...the Musical was Abs Great! Can't recall seeing the movie, tho.

With the right music picked out, FM would be a Great Musical....maybe a little campy...but a true story, and tear-jerker like Jersey Boys.

PS...Sorry, Dex, I don't share your opinion of musicals :xoxo:
