Wow! Thank you to whoever created You Tube!

Hey, everyone! I'm an old Ledgie who got busy and lost track. I've seen every show, but not followed closely since The Dance. I was down for a bit and decided to check out You Tube...OMG! Okay, I watched songs first, from the first to the last American shows. I WATCHED "Sara" go from Stevie being stand-offish toward Lindsey to being told by Lindsey, "You look HOT!" while looking at her very intensely!!! The smile and hug Stevie gave him in return was stunning to me!!!! Is there something I don't know?
Then there's the video catch of S & L coming back for the encore, he's kissing her hand and biting, slobbering on, IDK what. Her look is telling as she pulls him back to whisper about the interchange being on You Tube later. He shrugs like he doesn't care and she's like, just saying...and there are soooo many more!
I love watching but would hate for his children to see those interchanges. FM has always been an ADULT band delivering adult material. The wife knows the deal but children DON'T! Wonder if there will be an eventual backlash?

guitarchick82 07-14-2013 02:58 PM

There's a video of Lindsey telling Stevie she looks hot?

;)

finally someone had the guts to make a separate shipper thread instead of usurping all different threads that had nothing to do with what shippers really seem to want to talk about.

also, a thread that non-shippers who were actually at the specific "shipperdom ground-zero" Jones Beach show can avoid not to spoil all your fun. :)

SillyDreamer 07-14-2013 04:06 PM

I need to do some catch up for sure, shipper? I'll go on a learning mission...

Save you the time:

Shippers are those who believe Stevie & Lindsey either are, should be, will be or were involved romantically, specifically in the last 15 years.

The term shipper is used for any fictional or nonfictional couple.

SillyDreamer 07-14-2013 04:44 PM

Haha! Thank you CADreaming! Well, personally, I think people in their position live entirely different lives than we do. You can't act some things out, plan them, yes, but I'm inclined to believe it never really completely ended. I also think that if they want to have something on the side, they will. If Lindsey was my husband and looked at Stevie the way he does in the shot from Sacramento, he'd be dead meat!

guitarchick82 07-14-2013 08:59 PM

Wow, it definitely looks like he says "you look hot"! And I don't think he was referring to the weather! ;)

Shipper is such a broad term--there are so many different kinds. I guess you'd have to lump me into the shipper category because I do enjoy their relationship/duo-ship/whatever you want to call it. However, for me it's all about the music. The Stevie/Lindsey dynamic is just the icing, if you will. ;) Do I think there is anything going on between them now? No way. Will they ever be together again? Not a chance in hell. But their relationship and the evolution of it is so fascinating to me. Just the fact that their actually civil toward each other now and can actually be friends (kind of?) and that Lindsey is talking about "dialogues" yet to be had and "chapters" yet to be written. I mean, how long were they in a romantic relationship? Five years? Yet they're both still writing songs to and about one another? Come on, guys, can't we just admit that their relationship is incredibly strange and fascinating without it having to be about them being in love? It doesn't have to be some taboo, forbidden subject, does it?

As long as we don't let the crazies who write fanfic or the people who think they're secretly married in, surely we'll be in the clear? ;)

CADreaming 07-14-2013 09:19 PM

I think he either says "oh yeah" or "all night".

becca 07-14-2013 09:36 PM

I looked, doesn't look like so much to me. I just don't get the being excited by the prospect of them having some kind of intimate/romantic thing going on. It's because of his kids it does hit some triggers for me just people talking about it as 'wouldn't it be great if'... no, it'd be really crummy for three kids and a wife. Oddly enough I am someone in a relationship with a musician who I once said to 'if you can pull some and it were just sex' but it went quite wrong as I think he thought I was saying I wanted to go have some fun of my own and needed a set up for it which was totally not going to happen. TMI I know, but I grew up with two parents in a band and heard crap about my Mom looking at other band members on stage like she was interested in them and not my Dad and then my Dad supposedly looking at women in the audience... man, this kind of thing in real life is so not fun. :(

I guess it's not as bad somehow as Jenny Boyd-Fleetwood and Bob Weston? I suppose they were just having some fun but that one almost ended the band before Buckinham and Nicks could hook up with them, in which case would we have ever heard of any of all of them again?

I'm glad to see how much people are reading into the stage show, I feel much better to know it's mostly all in the eye of the beholder. Those short gif snippets of a hand being kissed are an exaggeration.

APerfectLie 07-14-2013 09:52 PM

SillyDreamer 07-14-2013 10:40 PM

Oh, Lord!

Well, I can see the problem with my question now, too bad! Why so protective? When you put yourselves out there like they do, what else is expected? Now, I might remember what led me to become disinterested in this forum years ago.
I don't care for nastiness, fan-fiction is terrifying, or anything mean-spirited but are we not all adults? I would imagine it's pretty "heavy", as Stevie would say, doing what they do, sometimes. If it were me, I could see some very big problems arising.
Do those of you who see nothing to it, feel that the progression of things as the show goes from nite to nite is planned? "Oh, I guess I should full on hug Lindsey tonite."? Or..." Oh, I think I'll kiss Stevie's hand and start nibbling on it too!"..."Stevie, I'm going to lean in and sniff (???) you while your finishing Sara at my mic! Un, honey, is that ok with you?"

First of all I wish you would stick around permanently. Just because you disagree with people is no reason to not post here. And secondly, yes, I do think their whole lovey dovey act is planned.

I don't think you really have to plan the whole thing. We have that Stevie interview where she told him to look at her, so she wouldn't be left hanging. He said he would look at her neck. From there, as the tour progresses they just do other things. You don't really have to talk about it much and it's not really a big deal. I think it may mean a lot to me the way they touch, but I don't think Stevie and Lindsey are losing a lot of time thinking about it. I mean, when Lindsey comes up behind her in that pervy way while she is at his mic during Sara, I don't necessarily think he told her he was going to do it and I don't think she cares one way or another.

He does something, Stevie recognizes a trend when he does it again and then she responds with something in kind. Oh, is he really going to rub his face all in my hair? Seriously? [shrug] Well, I guess I'll just arch my back to make it easy for him to access. Then, they leave the stage and don't give it a second thought, while people like us remember it from tour to tour. I don't think they are having ongoing planning discussions about it. Just a little "fact-checking" now and then . . .

I also think they do things to joke around with each other - like the chase at the end of GYOW - something one or the other just may not be into one night so one tries it and then drops it when the other doesn't respond. But, I do think they test run certain things & know what is visually appealing, that's just professional.

Yeah, like with Landslide when she would stand in back of him. She embraced him sometimes and then she would play the piano on his shoulder and then he decided he would just lean back and see if she would support his weight and she would. But I think there are some nights, if he knew she was mad at him that maybe it wouldn't be so wise for him to lean back and assume she wouldn't let him fall.

Michele

Exactly. She has said what they do onstage just sort of depends on their mood or what happened that day. For all we know, Lindsey could have ticked her off by standing in the doorway asking her how long it was gonna take her to fix her hair because the crickets had started. LOL.

guitarchick82 07-15-2013 04:32 PM

I think most people know their onstage antics are scripted. I mean, it's pretty obvious when things are scripted, because they're doing it at every single show. Now why people start reading into what they're doing onstage, I don't know. I don't see what the harm is in discussing their relationship. We all know Lindsey is happily married (he says so in pretty much every interview he gives) and that Stevie is happily single and they're never going to get back together. As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing going on behind the scenes or onstage that his wife would have anything to worry about. They are two people who were once romantically involved who have been musically involved for 40+ years--things are never going to be "normal." And like Lindsey says, they are playing characters up there onstage. You know what, I'm going to shut up and just post some Lindsey quotes, because I think he says it better than I can.

"There's a subtext of love between us, and it would be hard to deny that much of what we've accomplished had something to do with trying to prove something to each other.Maybe that's ****ed up, but this is someone I've known since I was 16, and I think on some weird level we're still trying to work some things out. There will never be romance there, but there are other kinds of love to be had."

"Each of our journeys has never been not a little about the other."

And my personal favorite:

Interviewer: "Do you feel that in some way now it’s part of your role to keep playing into this mythology?"

Lindsey: Well, it’s a mixed bag. There is the mythology and there is, you could call it, a role, but you know that doesn’t mean we haven’t lived it. If you backtrack all the way back to “Rumours,” when all of this mythology rose up, if you look at the appeal of that album, it went beyond the music. It was, whether people could identify it or not, this idea that under less than ideal circumstances, in fact, under quite emotionally challenging and painful circumstances, that we were able to somehow summon up the strength to rise above that and to sort of follow through on what we needed to do fulfill our destiny, if you want to call it that. And so the subtext of “Rumours” becomes not the soap opera part so much as that it was an act of will and that has continued. Where reality stops and where the role begins, it’s a little fuzzy in there, you know.

Interviewer: So not just for us, but for you two too?

Lindsey: For us too! Yeah, and I think that’s appropriate and I don’t know how it could really be any other way because of how it began, you know.

So the way I see it: they have a long, complicated history together, but the romance is over. Instead, they've gotten to a place where they can actually get along and look back on all they have accomplished together musically. They actually have the opportunity--now that they are both at better places in their personal lives--to be friends and have fun making music together. And THAT'S what gives me the warm fuzzies. Not their onstage antics or pretend romance or whatever crap the shippers are blabbing on about (:sorry:) Just the fact that they are getting along and are going to hopefully continue to make more incredibly awesome music for us all to enjoy.

The truth is it used to be a topic that started wars. It's not really welcome. Honestly, there are about as many opinions on it as there are members. Not everyone agrees with every little aspect and it makes people very upset. And threads get usurped. And feathers get ruffled. And people leave. And really, what difference does it make what people think? If they are acting out their roles, then wouldn't that be our role as well to think there might be something there? Aren't we expected to choose a side in the war of the star crossed lovers who can never ever ever be together again? Although, I heard that the war is pretty good lately. ;) :D

Desiree 07-15-2013 05:58 PM

I guess how each of us perceive their antics, relationship, etc. has a lot to do with who we ourselves are and the relationships we've had. There is very definitely someone in my past where there was no closure and I'm married for 35 years with 2 kids. I also love my husband, but if I was in highly charged, romantic (acting or not) situations, i.e., singing love songs I wrote about him to him every nite, well...
I don't see them together now in a full on love affair, but I'd bet money there are and have been slips. Like I said, they live differently than the rest of us.
What makes their chemistry so out there that so many people think they should be together, it seems to be a rare thing or is it? That so many people would care so much! I love the music and the story, real or not, it's like a train wreck, you can't take your eyes off them sometimes, lol!

I think Lindsey was doing something like that in that old tour clip. I think he was begging her and Robin to hurry up and finish putting up her hair bun, so they could get on stage.

Can anyone find that link to that recent article Lindsey did where he talks about hanging out with REM and how they would just wing their sets some nights and how FM just never ever does that? He says something like FM creates their whole show, who says what when and all that, and "kind of locks it down" or something to that effect and just does it over and over every night...
For the life of me I cannot find it tonight grrrr...

Is their onstage shtick choreographed? You betcha. Are there some minor variations over the course a tour based on fan reactions? Yep. Are they REALLLLY gonna play out their true personal lives onstage? Don't count on it. Does that mean everything is inauthentic, not necessarily. But it ain't literal. Just compelling to watch for some reason.

I wish I could find the article now but I'm doing this away from home.... he was asked recently about his kids and do they get all impressed with dad's being a big rock star and how big FMac is on tour and all and he said no, "because they see the pretense behind it all" ie they know it's a stage act...... so.....

It was the L. A. Times interview Lindsey did. He said:

"We're not one of those bands that throws the names of all their songs in a hat and pulls them out right before they go on stage," guitarist, songwriter and singer Lindsey Buckingham said last week from a tour stop in Charlotte, N.C. "Years ago I was hanging out with Peter Buck and went to several shows R.E.M. did and they literally did just that. That's one end of the spectrum.

"We've always had the sensibility that you work on the set and you structure it, much like a play, where once you've got the lines down and blocking right, you freeze it, and then you go out and do what you're doing night after night," he said. "You want to structure something that has form and that builds the right dynamic from start to finish."

Agreed. But, I think there is a literal symbolism onstage that parallels their personal relationship - past, present, whatever.

Yeah, you can tell Stevie likes to stay really close to that too. Remember how freaked she was because Rod Stewart wouldn't spend hours and hours in rehearsal for the two duets they were gonna do on tour? I've seen her either steer Lindsey away from or back to the choreography a few times. She tells him "go back to your place", "come here" or she has waited for him walk in the GYOW circle. It's been a little looser but she must be very comfortable with structure - I can see how she would really easily loose her place if they veered too far off course. That's why those monitors tell her exactly what to do.

Stevie always watches Lindsey very closely. You know when they switch stage sides during GYOW she looks at him like a hawk waiting for him to cross over to her side and as soon as he starts walking, she starts walking over to his. She's like staring at him, "When is he going to move."

It could be just because she doesn't want to trip over any cords, so she doesn't want his guitar cord to be under her foot, but I always think it's funny how intent she is.

For BTM, when he came out, she expected him to cross the stage during GYOW and she was going to cross the stage with him, but his microphone was too short and he couldn't move across the stage and it stopped him short. It was kind of funny, because she was going to go right into the old choreography they used to have when he was in the band. Muscle memory. A little heartbreaking too.

But that was one of the highpoints of Angel. Stevie was obsessed about where Lindsey was on the stage, waiting for him to come and share her mic. She must have looked over her shoulder 5 times waiting for him. It's like she was always afraid he wasn't going to get there in time. It's a wonder it didn't cause her a nervous breakdown. Then, she runs to his mic and runs away really fast, like she's on a time clock. Really hysterical.

What's kind of cute is that sometimes John is looking at Lindsey waiting for him to jump off of the drum kit too. So, he'll crane his neck occasionally to see it, to get the cue. Interesting to think what they are paying attention to that the audience is not aware of.

Michele

michelej1 07-16-2013 01:39 PM

I'm thinking of when they were in NY for SYW, Lindsey told that columnist (Liz Adams, maybe) that Stevie needed 2 hours before the show. He didn't know what she needed it for, but she just needed 2 hours. Maybe she gets a massage, maybe she does her singing exercises, who knows. But clearly there is a set routine.

And it makes sense. When it's set you don't have to think about it. You do it instinctively and there's less chance for error and you're much less likely to forget something. Michele

UndoingTheLaces 07-16-2013 01:53 PM

Something else to remember is that in addition to having set moves and rehearsed theatrics is the real emotion that comes through in the songs. I'm not a professional singer but I used to write songs all the time back in the 90's in hopes of becoming a songwriter and I used to sing my songs in a few bands. All these years later I have recordings of them on my iPod and I happily sing along when they come on. And I have to tell you, I have songs about lost loves that will still bring me to tears when I'm in the right kind of mood. When you write a good song it's like you pack in emotion in there and no matter where you are or what you're doing when you sing that song again that little bit of emotion comes out. So does it fire an untamed passion between these two people after all these years? Probably not. But does it bring out a certain feeling, a fondness, a tiny spark of love for who they used to be, themselves and to each other? I think so. That clip where she's singing Sara and puts her arms around him, that smile isn't fake. It's the smile of someone holding a life long friend who wasn't always in her life. It's the smile of someone who's remembering all the years they've had together creating some of the most memorable music in the planet. And it's the smile of someone who's so happy that they're both still here and able to do what they love doing.

And when they're singing Without You and looking at each other, there's probably a moment there where the world falls away and they are transported back in time, two young crazy kids playing a Buckingham Nicks gig, praying that this record will sell so they can stop with the Hamburger Helper and the cleaning houses and wondering where the next bit of change is coming from. And it has nothing to do with his wife and kids or her many lovers. It's about that little bit of magic that hides inside of songs. And it's a beautiful thing.

michelej1 07-16-2013 02:47 PM

I think that it's only natural to have a certain pride in the creation. Like parents do. You look at a child, then at each other and get a little googly-eyed thinking, "we made this together." And it has to be like that with the songs and the great success of FM, this thing that you conceived and built together out of nothing. When you look at the other people who formed it with you, you see all of that in their eyes. The pride of joint ownership and struggle. Not every night, but certainly some special nights, you're still overcome with the amazing reality and portent of it all.

Somebody mentioned the Jones Beach show as being "shippy" and I forgot to ask what they meant by that. Anybody who was at the show or has any knowledge about it care to comment on that?

I have a friend who went to the Jones Beach show...he took his girlfriend for her first FM show. They are in their mid forties. About 45 minutes in she asked him how long Stevie and Lindsey had been married. She thought Stevie looked 'in love' with him, and that Lindsey looked like he wanted to 'make love' to her. My friend said he'd never thought about the two of them at all romantically speaking before, but that they were very 'hands on' with each other and that it actually made him wonder, and that was before his girl said a thing. They were 5th row just to the right of Stevie's mic! I'd have killed for those tickets!!!!!!!!
Of course, that was just their take....
