Stevie Songs as Seen/Heard Through the Eyes of a BuckHead

you know how youtube is full of videos of SN parading in the top hat instead of videos of LB playing solos and letting fans strum his guitar during GYOW?

you know how Lindsey fans may not be that delighted to listen to a lot of adult contemporary type of songs instead of LB's rockers or baroque-y lush guitar pieces?

this year i finally had a chance to see FM in action. i was worried that as a primarily a Lindsey fan i will hate FM shows. but, turns out that there is a lot of stuff for Lindsey-fans to do during SN songs. like, watch and interact with Lindsey who has time to interact with audience the way he doesn't during his solo shows.

so while i will still complain about having to listen to many songs i don't like, not being able to influence the setlist changes or get any requests, show not going off track almost ever, outrageous ticket prices, having to be at a huge arena instead of at a nice intimate venue, no m&gs with LB where you can file all your complaints about the show with him (unless he drops in on Mick's like he did in Vancouver and Tacoma), i have to say there's still a lot of fun to be had as a LB fan at FM show during SN songs.

i've seen some nice examples among recordings from this year's tour, and so here are 2 i saw today, Stand Back and Gold Dust Woman (a SN song that i actually love) -

and, did i mention Mick? <3

redtulip 05-22-2013 09:13 PM

Love this idea! I have a couple videos in mind but I'll start with this one:

Love how he sticks his tongue out at 2:00 and then of course the gorgeous guitar solo starting at 3:09. Lots of other smiles throughout the video and I also love how he sings along even when he's away from the mic.

I told you he'd keep your attention, and make her songs more bearable ;)

Anyways, I love Landslide, and seeing them together while performimg it...but truth be told, all I really see is Lindsey, even on that one

I actually couldn't see Stevie (or John) well from my vantage point, but I'd sometimes catch a glimpse of her, and it startled me...seriously  I was so focused on Linds, I forgot the others were there :D

Even the drunk singers couldn't ruin this song, or Lindsey's playing...

I love the premise of this thread. And there's some great clips here! Stand Back is a particular favourite of mine. LB is a fantastic showman even when he's in the backseat.

It's always a bit sad for me how people seem to only really enjoy the output of one songwriter or the other, rather than all of them, but it seems really common in Mac fandom. My partner actively dislikes Lindsey's songwriting and singing, and my sister actively dislikes Christine's (I guess she has it easy these days). It's completely understandable, but it still kinda bums me out and can't make things very easy. Glad you LB fans have found ways to enjoy the whole concert. :) These clips are awesome.

Body language dictates it looked more to me like(even though I can't see LB's mouth) LB was having a quick conversation with Mick. Mick's probably learned to read lips cause I'm sure he wouldn't be able to hear Lindsey.

holidayroad 05-23-2013 09:20 AM

I definitely like what Fleetwood Mac as a group does. Of course, Lindsey is my favorite. I really enjoy the majority of Stevie's songs. I definitely love Christine's songs. I also like to listen to Bob Welch, Danny Kirwan, and Billy Burnette.

I agree Dex. I find it sad and amusing how the fans of each member feel the need to tear down the other's faves. Many of Lindsey's fans deplore Stevie. Many of Stevie's fans deplore Lindsey. Everyone seems to like Christine but if anyone says anything bad about her they get jumped on by everyone.

no reason to be sad.

you can't push down people's throats something they don't like or they are indifferent to, and life is too short to try to make yourself like something, especially when it is entertainment, that is there in the first place to make your life nicer and easier, more relaxed. it's not supposed to be work, it's supposed to be fun. and the posts and videos in this thread show how it can actually be a lot of fun, without having to like every song in the set, or even if you are indifferent to one of the performers / band members, but a huge fan of the other. especially if that other performer does everything in his/her power to make it worthwhile to everybody.

as far as different fan interactions, i found at these shows, where i met many primarily SN fans too, that we can all enjoy the shows and happily co-exist together, be respectful of each others' tastes and views, because in the end we are all there to have fun. i've really enjoyed meeting many different hard-core fans in front of the stage at the few shows i attended. :wavey: :xoxo:

michelej1 05-23-2013 12:13 PM

I like all three of the devils just fine. I will say that during The Dance tour, during Stand Back, I never looked at Stevie even once as she performed that song during the entire tour. I just stared at Lindsey and Christine the whole time.

Generally speaking though, I like Stevie during Stand Back and feel I have seen her doing it solo enough that not seeing her sing it during The Dance tour didn't hurt anything.

Yep! I met a lot of Stevie fans, and enjoyed the show standing right next to some of them  We love who we love, that's all. Funny, because some were very over the top in their clothing, make-up, etc., which did make me chuckle a little...BUT, everyone just started talking, and it's not as if it was difficult to hold an enjoyable conversation  Far from it! All the fans got along fine - Chiffs, Buckheads, new fans, old fans...everyone :blob1::blob2::blob1::blob2:

Perhaps I didn't express myself very well. I didn't mean that Mac fans didn't get along or that people needed to be forced to like anything. Far from it. But it's just kind of a bummer that there are huge chunks of the Mac catalogue that many fans don't get much out of. There are loads of artists that I can't get into, similarly, and that's a bummer too, because I often do feel like I'm missing out on something. The fact that that happens within FM fandom as a result of different songwriting styles within the band is just one of the more perplexing and unique things about the Mac. Perhaps "interesting" would've been the word to use over "sad". Didn't mean anything by it, guys.

And yes, elle. I agree with your sentiment. It is great that all the members of the band ensure that there's something for everyone to enjoy. And I'm pleased you enjoyed your first FM concert so much. :)

Well no one has control over what their tastes are, and no one needs to defend their likes and dislikes. What is sad though (and fortunately this only applies to a few) is when the fans of one seem to actively go out of their way to make sure they don't enjoy anything about the other(s) at all. That's just silly, and you are only hurting yourself.

Of course not. But when I dislike something that a lot of other people enjoy, I do find it a bit sad. And when I like a band but have to qualify it because I only enjoy particular eras or members, that too is a bit sad to me. It's not something I have to defend though, absolutely. But surely the enjoyment of more stuff is optimal. And I agree wholeheartedly with the rest of your post.

Since Mick does have a loss of hearing, I bet he probably can read lips.

Still, one of the pleasures of being on stage for Mick is that he no longer has to listen to Lindsey and Stevie. He can just gape, point, bulge his eyes and smile at them when they approach the drum kit and they think they're being acknowledged. Doesn't really matter what they're saying.

John on the other hand is held captive on the floor. Stevie can just saunter up to him any time, lean in close and say whatever she wants. I'm sure sometimes she's giving him useful information about the sound, his bass level, etc., but 50% of the time I know she's saying things like, "I snagged my shawl" and "I think there are doves here." The poor guy has no where to go:distress:.

No, I know exactly what you mean and I do think it's sad. I've used this example before, but I'll say it again. I love Jimmy Stewart, but I don't like westerns. So, I've only seen about half of Jimmy Stewart's movies and I do feel it's as if seeing Stewart through a monocle, rather than with both eyes open. I call myself a Stewart fan, but by not paying attention to the westerns, I missed out on half of his evolution and I do regret it -- just not enough to sit through Cheyenne Autumn.

When Christine did Meantime and they told her that her songs sound like Fleetwood Mac she said, of course they do because she wrote most of the "blooming" hits. Then, she said, no, that she was heavily influenced by Lindsey as they all were and she copied a lot from him and I find (or imagine to myself) that they all copy from each other and speak to each other. I so much like looking at the parts of them that were formed through and because of Fleetwood Mac. I think I understand them more as solo artists via their non-solo work so I really appreciate the full picture.

Yet, I only look at Fleetwood Mac from 1967-1974 as a way to get closer to Christine. I don't embrace that era and don't want to explore it any more than I already have. So, I understand the disinterest, too.

Michele

Agreed. When I saw the title of the thread, I thought it would be Lindsey fans discussing Stevie's songs from an alternative perspective, which could have been interesting. Instead I find it is about the delights of ignoring her during a live show.

Disappointing.

interesting how people see what they want to see, or bring in their own preconceived notions.

the point of this thread is not about ignoring Stevie, it's about enjoying what Lindsey does during the show.

shackin'up 05-24-2013 08:25 AM

You know, I've always been a Fleetwood mac fan. After their heyday, I've always thought that lindsey kept developping outside and inside FM in a more interesting way than Stevie did. From the moment I joined The Ledge I was flabbergasted about the tribes over here, and before I knew it, the so called Chiffons did such a defensive appeal on me that I found myself in a camp.

But at heart- I'm a macfan and I'll always be. Therefore, the topic is not really my Cup Of Tea...

Dex 05-24-2013 08:37 AM

I don't know, shackin'up. I don't think this thread is really about FM-fan tribalism. It's just a fun subversion of the usual focus of these performances. I'm really enjoying these clips.

This. I enjoy seeing what Lindsey is doing during these songs since in the traditional videos you find of the performances you miss all the nuances of what he's doing because the camera is usually focused on Stevie. I find it interesting to see what Lindsey and even Mick are up to as well. I'd say John too, but he's pretty much just standing on the side of the stage :D

oh don't get me wrong, me too. I just thought that the thread would focus on the other Maccers from Lindseyfan perspective. Interesting.

Still, I think it's a shame that you can't be critical towards whoever in the band without getting defenders in your neck. When I found this board back in the day, I thought it was mindblowing that I found à place where I could find people with the same passion. And I did. But I had never ever pictured Fleetwood Mac fans as basicly a compound with three tribes batteling eachother.

it would! Mick has been another one who is so great to watch during these shows (although hidden drummer detracts a bit). people who i took to a show with me and were just casual listeners thought that:
a) the band as a whole is really great live and well worth seeing, they sound really tight even if you are not a fan and don't care that much about their songs.
b) Lindsey and Mick are unbelievable performers.

personally, i really enjoyed Mick's performances and was shocked when reading some of the reviews that described him as just a background to BN. they must have not been really watching the show.

now John, yeah, he is definitely not a flashy type. i watched him, definitely not a secret wild man we were just too busy to notice.

It seems to me that all message boards turn out that way. I think the Twilight movies coined the phrase "Team X" and "Team Y" but it seems like it's been that divisive way for 20 years now on the internet. And I agree with what you said about being pushed.

There's a reflexive push back. I thought I was neutral, but online supporters can make you feel you really dislike a character or performer, when what you really dislike are their fans.

Which is not to say that's what happened with me and Twilight. I just really, really hated Jacob all along, based on Stephenie Meyer's frustrating saga. His fans didn't drive me to it.

Big time! I can't tell you how many times I've seen a video of GYOW, for instance, and during the solo, all we see is Stevie walking around, while Lindsey is playing his heart out. My frustration isn't with Stevie. Why would it be? It's just that it's frustrating when watching a video of my favorite band, and I miss all the cool things Lindsey is doing, whether on Stevie's songs (like Lindsey's beautiful guitar work on Gypsy or GDW), or on his own songs (see, GYOW, above), even! I get that the video was shot by a Stevie fan. Makes sense they'd keep the camera on her. A FM fan would probably follow Lindsey on a Lindsey song and/or solo. That's why my videos of her songs, I mostly follow Lindsey with the camera. Because that's what/who I want to watch. This thread is just a way to share with newer fans, especially, what goes on on stage other than Stevie, since she really is, for various reasons, the focus in most online videos of the band. What's wrong with that?? We're simply trying to bring to the forefront, the videos that focus more on Lindsey while in concert with The Mac. There are far fewer of them, so they can be hard to find. We share the things we enjoy.

I agree. Go for it  Why not?

It's such a neat thing to see him play on Stevie's songs, and watch - up close - all the little nuances he adds. Even when his back is to us, and he's facing Mick, you can watch him do all those cool spacey parts on GDW...

And sometimes, like with Dreams, he is just staring straight ahead, as if in a trance. Seemingly disconnected, but always at one with his guitar.
