Favourite Stevie Single
Just curious on everybody's thoughts here. Above I've put some of Stevie's biggest hits, just like to observe how many people would choose certain songs over others...
|
I'm intrigued by your poll choices here, whitewingdove! You've left out a lot of the "major" singles. I kind of like that, because those are never really my favourites.
I don't think Trouble in Shangri-La was ever actually a single, was it? I could be wrong. But as it's up there I'll give it my vote. It was the first song I'd ever heard by her (while knowing who she was) and it just moved me enormously. |

Since The White Album
I grew up with 3 older siblings...Cath and Dave were twins and only like 9 years older so, I remember Landlide and Rhiannon, Rumors...I fell in love with Stevie as a young teen, maybe 13 when on a plane to California I heard After The Glitter Fades...on one of their airline channels...I couldn't stop thinking about it. Then, on the school bus the driver was an older lady that was hip and played BCN for us, and I remember smoking cigarettes and at least twice a day (I went to a private school that was over an hour away for freshman and sophmore year) Just Like The One We Love, Just Like The One Wing Bird, Just Like The One We'd Done {EDGE OF 17} blasted us on the back near the speakers...it grew on me and I connected the two...by the time Mirage came out, I got Bella Donna and Mirage for Christmas...MTV was new and Gypsy kept playing every 3 songs.
My true favorites are of course, After The Glitter Fades (Solo) and Gypsy (FMac) and ATGF was a single... Edge Of 17...brings back such bad ass fun times as a kid...when we were all trying our best to be bad ass at 13... Hope you read to here... Jim |

I just have to say, ever since you mentioned BCN i have been wondering what it stands for, it's totally slipped from my head. Could you please refresh my memory? (I'll probably end up Googling it anyway, to be honest) It's good to hear that long time fans like you are still hanging on, koodos to you! ;) Thanks again! |

WBCN was a USA famous Boston, MA Rock station. They played all the best Rock music without a doubt...They played Joplin, Boston, Clapton, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, J Giels, Hendrix...etc...and they played the music from artists from The Classic Rock Era 60s and 70s bands new music. I mean, you didn't hear Talk To Me but, you heard Stop Draggin My Heart Around, Edge Of 17...and not Seven Wonders but, Tusk, Go Your Own Way, Sisters Of The Moon... They were also a station that had the Rock stars in the studio for a couple of hours for interviews and music...they played not just the hits but mid album songs unknown to the public unless they had the album...which is why the bands and the Music Industry...and listeners loved them...a lot of people would buy an artists record because they liked an unknown track...even if they didn't like the artists current single from the record. I interned there for a month when I was 17 or 18. I would hang in the studio and answer the "caller number 9 wins 2 tickets to see Belinda Carslisle (yeah, right*even though I liked her*) My older siblings were from my Dads first marriage (he's on his 4th) so they are my 1/2 siblings as we have the same Dad...so, I grew up with them and its like they were justs sisters and brothers not just 1/2s. My first Rock album was, Meatloaf, Bat Outa Hell...even though it was out for years...I grew up with my grandmother mostly and she had the radio on an Am station that played Weekly Top 40....and bands like The Bee Gees and Debbie Boone. Aside from Stevie and Rock and Roll...my beginnings to loving and becoming aware of music was with my Mum in the car driving late at night to or from my grandmothers house, Nana Mac (my soulmate...Thank you to Mike Bise for all the Sanctuary songs as I listened to it on my CD on repeat as I drove behind the ambulance with Dr Tom, my bf...after she passed in my arms and it held me together from that day to this moment) I have what my doctor called an Eidetic memory...I remember being little...before seatbelts and car seats...I would have my head on my Mums lap...with the heat softly blowing on us...as I lay across the huge front seat...the smell of her soft perfume, Nanas soap, slight cigarette smoke...listening to Mums Country Station...Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty, Dolly...etc...I used to listen to all her country records...my Dads Elvis My brother and sisters Rock....we had a huge coffin like living room stereo thing...unless you're from the late 60s early 70s, no one would know what I am talking about...it was just a staple furniture piece at that time...when I moved to LA...at like, 20 years old...I played all my albums on that thing...Tango finally had the speakers blown completley out... so...that's where and how and why I love her to this day...she was playing as long as I remember...and its her Country Songs that got me hooked...After The Glitter Fades, Highway Man, That's All Right...Leather and Lace...etc... You are never too young or old to Rock and be bad ass...bad ass is not being an assho*** so much...its being your own person, having your own vibe, individuality, style etc...and being proud of that...and confidence...having confidence even if you are scared to hell...but, you stay cool...and keep your foundation...even if someone is trying to topple it or you down...For me, I have all this music, lyrics, Rock Stars...Stevie to summon and all things written in in this too long post...to keep me strong and still standing. Wasn't Nightbird released as a single? That would be my pick for favourite.
|
If Anyone Falls doesn't qualify?
Speaking of WBCN, in late 1979/ early 1980, they did a great mashup called Another Tusk In The Wall. |
Edge of Seventeen has to be one of my favorite singls. There's just something about that song that puts me in a good mood. Plus, it's a great song to workout to.

Edge of Seventeen, BUT, Planets of the Universe is really my favourite.

Talk to Me, Leather and Lace and If Anyone Falls were three of her biggest solo hits. Also, After the Glitter Fades and Nightbird hit the top 40.
Here are her Top 40 Hits Stop Your Dragging My Heart Around Top 40 #3 Leather and Lace Top 40 #6 Edge of Seventeen Top 40 #11 After the Glitter Fades Top 40 #32 Stand Back Top 40 #5 If Anyone Falls Top 40 #14 Nightbird Top 40 #33 Talk to Me Top 40 #4 I can't Wait Top 40 #16 Rooms on Fire Top 40 #16 Collaborations with other artists Whenever I Call You Friend Top 40 #5 Gold Top 40 #5 Midnight Wind Top 40 #28 Needles and Pins Top 40 #37 They don't give her credit for Whenever I Call You Friend, Midnight Wind or Gold as a duet in the chart books. Instead, she is called the harmony vocal, which is bull**** especially with Whenever I Call You Friend. She does get credit for Needles and Pins P.S. Blue Denim isn't even a good song, let a alone a hit. Blue Denim, Moonlight, Sorcerer, and Trouble in Shangri La shouldn't be on this list. They weren't Hits. |

Stop Draggin My Heart Around.
I still think it's one of the best duets in the history of rock. I wish someone would help me understand the appeal of Moonlight. I think it's easily one of the most generic/bland songs she's ever recorded. Not a unique chord or lyric in the entire song. For me it's the low point on In Your Dreams and keeps the record from being almost better than Bella Donna. Also - lots of big ones not on here: If Anyone Falls Nightbird After The Glitter Fades Talk To Me |
It's a great song, not sure why it gets so much hate from fans! It's a badass song!! It's rockin! Definitely one of my top 5 or maybe even 3 songs ever by Stevie as a solo artist! Love seeing your appreciation!

Edge of Seventeen. It justifies a solo career.

I fully realize I'm going off on a rant here, but it just grieves me to no end that Stevie fans routinely dismiss the Street Angel album because Stevie herself washed her hands of it due to poor sales. She wasn't used to not going platinum, and so she stomped away from the album like a spoiled child. I don't buy Stevie's reasoning one iota- that it brings back painful memories of a dark time. Street Angel was recorded & released after her Klonopin & rehab stint. It should be celebrated as her comeback. Yes, it has clunkers, but every solo album of hers does. :p |
Louie, I wish to exchange a very enthusiastic cyber-highfive with you.
I think Street Angel's status as a for-fans-only album, and probably her worst solo effort, is probably a fair one. I do appreciate the back-to-basics rock sound they went for on that one, and I think a lot of its commercial failings were largely due to the musical climate at the time of its release. But I'd say the songwriting and vocals on that album, even though they are somewhat patchy at the best of times, are generally below her standard (Destiny is a good song but to me she just sounds like she's singing it from beyond the grave, for example). But, I absolutely agree, the way fans write this album off is completely ridiculous, and they do miss out on some gems. I've made a playlist of 10 or so songs from the album that I find quite enjoyable. And certainly I listen to it far more than any of the songs from Rock a Little. :) There are many songs from SA and TOSOTM that she'd kick ass at live these days. It's a real shame she seems to have written that era off so completely. |

Artistically, I would argue Sleeping Angel was her best and most underappreciated song. Re: for the love of TOSOTM and SA...holla...hidden gems galore...and I also don't buy Stevie's reaction to the (general publics) reaction to this. This Was the most heart-warming, best work she could provide after 8 years of addiction. I love the fact that this (along with Mirror) was her break-through into delivering Real, Raw emotion in a straight-forward way. Letting us know the true Stephanie and heartbreak/hardships she has endoured throughout the years. Without these albums we may have never heard Silver Springs (97) , For What It's Worth, and You May Be The One just to name a few. These (latter) works proved what an established, well-rounded Survivor SN has become through her many tribulations. Although we don't hear nearly enough from her, she delivers in spades when she does conquer new (and older) material. I can accept the fact that when Stevie does sing...she gives us all a little glimpse of the woman and rock Legend that she has become. And does so in "little pieces" to leave us all wanting more "so...You don't forget me....". Re: OP whitewingeddove: embrace your individuality and keen ear for Talent. You are a badass! |
