You know what, not again with the iTunes. Connecting iTunes to my tv would just be a hassle. Whereas I can connect my Kindle to the tv with an HDMI cord.

I'm guessing you only have a desktop computer at home? I stream shows/movies/etc from my laptop to my TV all the time with a HDMI cord, but I've never downloaded or played videos through iTunes. So this is new territory for me. I wonder if I should just wait for the Amazon release?

nailatixela 05-07-2013 12:59 PM

No hard copy? :(

jkmaletic 05-07-2013 01:03 PM

if you can burn itunes songs to a cd disc, can't you burn an itunes movie to a dvd disc, or no?

You probably have to "upconvert" the file from a *.mov to a *.vob or *.mpeg. I'm not sure how much, if any, information is lost in the conversion.

I'm constantly appalled that in 2013 it's still such a hassle to transmit content wirelessly from any wi-fi enabled device to an HD television in true/full high definition.

Oh, and what is the point of pre-ordering a digital download?

Macfanforever 05-07-2013 01:26 PM

More crappy digital encoded music for bucks.I'm glad she's selling them.

Digital download for bucks is not my cup of tea here.

It looks like the CDs are history like the cassettes,VHS,Betamax and vinyl.

I'm glad that some vinyl is still produced.

Please release IYD on vinyl.

I have an Apple macbook, but without the apple tv conduit, I'm not going to be able to hook that up to my tv. I already have a Roku. I don't want an apple tv. Itunes content is different than other content. I'm sick of these walled gardens and I don't want to keep content in my Itunes library anymore. I'm moving away from Apple downloads because the media is not easily transferable.

Oh jeez. What a friggin hassle. Thanks for the info tho. I hate Apple sometimes.

Although I've never tried, if I can pull up itunes on my Kindle I can attach that to my tele.

Has anyone here ever pulled up itunes on their Kindle Fire hd?

kak125 05-07-2013 01:48 PM

they should offer this documentary to be rented at least through itunes incase people dont want to buy it. lol i just watch stuff on my work computer or on my laptop at home.

that's the thing, how do we know it won't just be an itunes release? This REALLY needs to be released on dvd/ bluray. it was shot so beautifully it'd be a shame to have to only watch it on iTunes. :(

apple sucks.

Josh2003 05-07-2013 03:07 PM

Yeah, I think I'll be holding out for a DVD release...not because of any aversion to apple/itunes, but in hopes that the DVD might have a plethora of bonus features :-)

i think i will probably get both but yeah i want the dvd because i want bonus features so it better have it or else -ha!! seriously though i would love to see the unedited version that would be fantastic!

Richard B 05-07-2013 03:22 PM

Wow. This thread is disturbing with all the Apple hate. Like it's their fault or something.
Be glad it's coming out somewhere, as physical media is getting scarcer and digital will be the future as physical media dies. Just no point in it anymore...very costly to distribute. I mean damn, they're already streaming 3D, which looks amazing. Home video is taking a hit and blu-ray sales have been falling as well.

Within the next 3 years streaming with BD quality will be everywhere (it's already started). Besides, the actual documentary is all digital from the source. Makes 100% perfect sense that digital should be the main distribution outlet.

I actually thought the film looked crappy blown up in the theater. It's gonna be so much better on digital, between all my devices.

Apple's incompatibility with other devices is their fault. I have an Iphone, an Ipad and a Macbook. There's no reason why I should need an Apple tv to get media from one of those devices to my tv. I don't want media I buy from Apple to be separated from the rest of my library anymore. The more Apple tries to lock me in, the more I want to break free. If I buy it on Netflix or on Amazon, I can pull it up on my Roku or my tivo or connect my kindle to my tv. Can't do that with Apple. I want universality which it is not in Apple's financial interest to provide and that was something I accepted 5 years ago, even 2 years ago, but not any longer.

jkmaletic 05-07-2013 03:39 PM

It appears you can't watch an itunes movie on a kindle, so here are my options as far as I know, if I want to watch it in my comfy living room on tv and not my desktop:

-Buy an apple tv box.

-Buy an ipad and use an hdmi cable to hook up.

both of these are expensive. I hate to complain, but this sucks.

But it's not just an HDMI cable. You have to get the $40 Adapter to hook the Ipad up. The Ipad doesn't have an HDMI slot. So, get the dongle and that should do it for you.

you don't need an apple tv. you can hook your macbook or ipad up to the tv directly. your apple content shouldn't be "separated" from the rest of your library--i'm not getting what you mean by that, or what problem you're having streamlining your apple content with your other devices/downloads.

I know, really!

It's not like pre ordering it from your neighborhood DVD store, where they have limited copies when something first comes out..

J.Miller 05-07-2013 10:03 PM

:blob2: Finally ! I have been waiting a long time for this. I just did the preorder. Showing some Apple love; If you purchased anything for iTunes it follows you around forever. For example we purchased Stevie's video Sorcerer on iTunes something like 10 years ago and forgot that we did so. Sorcerer later showed up later as a purchased item when we got newer devices. When I downloaded the Fleetwood Mac ep on an iPad it automatically loaded on several of our other devices. How cool is that!

Macfanforever 05-07-2013 10:22 PM

I love the stone age. I want my rock vinyl.

Screw digital downloads.

Amazon does the same thing, but if you buy it on compact disc, it keeps the digital version for you too. So, albums that I bought before there even was an ipod are in my Amazon cloud now.

I haven't bought any movies through Itunes, but I have purchased some tv shows. The last one was this season of Doctor Who. You can set it to download automatically, so Saturday I go in there and the show's already there to watch.

One thing that bothered me with Apple is that it limits the number of devices that you can download onto and I have sold a couple of computers and I forgot to deactivate them in the Itunes store before the sale. So, then I was limited in being able to download new purchases onto my new computer. You can deactivate ALL devices to free up your quota again, but they only let you do that once every few years. Itunes is a big problem to me.

My brother told me about how
happy he is with his Apple tv. I looked into it and its $99. Not bad, really, and you can watch netflix, youtube and anything on iTunes, like this Stevie documentary
AND it'll work with a pc! All you need is wifi and an hdmi cable to hook up the little 4x4 inch Apple tv box to your tele. I already have wifi and the hdmi cable, so I think I'm gonna get an Apple tv box this weekend.

We have something like 10 devices and seem to no problem uploading from iTunes
on all of them.

You don't have to authorize an Ipad or iphone. But you have to authorize computers.

I like the fact that the Roku gets more channels for the same price. With a Plex download you can get Itunes content on Roku, but it's a problematic connection.

To pre-order the full, high definition edition of In Your Dreams, change your settings from 720p to 1080p in iTunes. You can do this by going to EDIT —> PREFERENCE —> STORE in your iTunes playlist. iTunes defaults to the lower quality 720p. I think you can still download the higher quality file later even if you preordered the lower quality version, but this will save you some time.

This is often true, but not always. Stevie's Enchanted boxed set was once available on iTunes in the UK, I bought a digital copy then, but it's since been removed from their store for some reason, and now isn't available for us to download to newer devices as purchased in full. I was a little miffed by that, as I had to resort to less-than-legal means to get the album from my iPod touch to my new computer. Small nitpick, I know. I'm not that upset or anything, but your comment just reminded me. With how technology and licensing change so rapidly, some things will inevitably fall through the cracks. I don't have a lot of room in my apartment so I really appreciate digital content, but sometimes it's nice to have a good ol' trustworthy physical copy of something. :)

I was expecting a digital-only release of this, to be honest. Let's face it, outside of the core fanbase, this film is small-time. But I too am a little disappointed. I'm ok with watching TV on an iPad/computer, but when something's labelled a "film" I always want to watch it on a bigger screen. I know there's ways to do that, but realistically, I probably won't be inclined to buy any new equipment to hook my computer up to the tv, so until it's put on some streaming software that's available on my Ps3, this probably will be seen by me on a small screen. Oh well.

Maxd9 05-08-2013 09:36 AM

There's no sign of it being available on iTunes in the UK yet. I hope it's not just a US release.

I could really care less if it's released digitally or otherwise, as long as it's released. The thought of being able to watch it again and again just delights me to no end. Of course it doesn't hurt that I just bought a new laptop so I will be able to watch it. This would not have been possible on my old 8 year old PC.

Yes, with books I have gone completely digital, but not with music if it's an artist I like, I like a hard copy. If I just like the song and am ambivalent about the artist, it doesn't matter so much.

I guess I didn't know how much releasing a DVD cost. I thought they were easy to put out, since Lindsey has put out a couple for fewer buyers, so I guess I figured IYD would eventually be out on DVD as well. I will be a little surprised if it doesn't make it.

If I get it on tv, I can download it to my DVD recorder and get a copy that way.

iTunes videos come in Mpeg4 format. Not sure if this impacts any conversion process.

The purpose of pre-ordering is often a lower price, and extras that don't come with the standard release. I don't know if that is the case here, but iTunes has pre-orders often, and there's almost always a perk.
