Stevie Nicks stirs up fandemonium in Toronto

ON SCREEN / Singer is in town promoting her new documentary

Xtra staff / Toronto / Monday, April 15, 2013

The incomparable Stevie Nicks thrilled fans (including more than a couple gay men) at TIFF Bell Lightbox ahead of the Canadian premiere of her new documentary, In Your Dreams. The doc, created with Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, takes a behind the scenes look at the making of her 2011 album of the same name.

Nicks is also playing a Fleetwood Mac gig on April 16 at the Air Canada Centre. Fleetwood Mac hit the big time in the 1970s. Their 1977 album, Rumours, had four number one hits, including "You Make Loving Fun," "Go Your Own Way" and "Don’t Stop."

Nicks has maintained a rock star status through the years and has had a successful solo career with such hits as "Edge of Seventeen" and "Stand Back." A recent episode of Glee introduced a new generation to Nicks and Fleetwood Mac.

In the below video interview with Xtra, Nicks talks about today's music industry, including her favourite new artist. The documentary In Your Dreams plays at TIFF April 16-18.

Stevie Nicks fans will get their fill with In Your Dreams: review

Steve Nicks: Nicks In Your Dreams is an affectionate documentary about the Fleetwood Mac singer co-directed by Eurythmics Dave Stewart.

By:Linda Barnard, *** (3 out of 4 stars)

A documentary about the making of Stevie Nicks’ album. Directed by Nicks and Dave Stewart. 100 minutes. Screens April 16-18 at TIFF Bell Lightbox. G

Steve Nicks:In Your Dreams shows devotion to its raspy-voiced rock goddess subject immediately, with a montage of concert-goers professing their love for the poetic Fleetwood Macsinger-songwriter who went on to solo success.

Screening at a pair of gala premieres Monday night at the TIFF Bell Lightbox with Nicks in attendance to do post-show Q&A sessions, true fans will find their gold dust woman as the doc unspools, witnessing the creative machinery behind her songwriting process, as Nicks makes the 2011 album of the same name in her California home studio.

Nicks and the rest of Fleetwood Mac (minus Christine McVie, who exited the band in 1998) play the Air Canada Centre Tuesday.

Nicks directs the doc with musician-producer Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame, who co-wrote some of the songs on In Your Dreams, co-producing the album with Glen Ballard.

Stewart, who has been working with film since he traded a gold coin he found on the street for a camera, explains he and Nicks come from similar places. Both made music at the start of their careers with romantic partners; he with Annie Lennox and Nicks with Lindsey Buckingham, which ended when the band was recording 1977’s Rumours.

Musical film bios that also serve as companion pieces (or marketing devices, for the cynical) for releases are popping up all over lately, most notably: The History of the Eagles: Part 1 and 2 and Dave Grohl’s Sound City.

The track-by-track exploration reveals Nicks as a perfectionist with a remarkable ear and impressive musical memory. She uses poetry from her journal to create lyrics — borrowing others from Edgar Allan Poe — setting them to music she randomly figures out on a keyboard (she has no formal training). Other times she sets her words to Stewart’s guitar.

If Nicks decides to break musical or lyric-writing rules as she goes (to the obvious exasperation of Buckingham in one amusing scene), it makes no nevermind to her. “You wouldn’t say that to Dylan,” she snaps.

The track-by-track journey through the album gets a bit dreary, but hearing that throaty, constricted voice soar above the music as Nicks stands in the echo chamber created by her home’s curved staircase or while dressed as a witchy diva on her terrace to belt out the poignant “Italian Summer,” makes up for a lot.

And for those of us who have loved Nicks since she joined Fleetwood Mac in 1974, seeing her peer at a lyric sheet through a magnifying glass brings a certain comfort. We’re getting older, too, Stevie.

I crack up when Stevie tells reporters that if it was 1975 she would have asked Phillip Phillips to join FM. As if she had any power in that group in 1975.

Stevie Nicks recounts dark days of 'Rumours'

Cassandra Szklarski, The Canadian Press
Published Tuesday, April 16, 2013 7:37AM EDT

TORONTO -- Fleetwood Mac songstress Stevie Nicks is tantalizing fans with a bold idea: a one-woman show.

Could something along the lines of "My Name is Stevie" (in the vein of Barbra Streisand's "My Name is Barbra") or "Stevie With an I-E" (in the spirit of Liza Minnelli's "Liza With a Z") be in the tarot cards?

The raspy-voiced veteran says it's an idea her pal Dave Stewart has been trying to get her to embrace.

Nicks made the comments while appearing at the Canadian premiere of her documentary "In Your Dreams," which follows her and the Eurythmics hitmaker as they write and record her 2011 album of the same name.

She says Stewart's plan would involve massive video screens revealing images from Nicks' storied life. But the "Landslide" crooner is laughing off the idea, noting: "I'm not Barbra Streisand."

Nicks' creative bond with Stewart is traced in an affectionate documentary that reveals the veteran rockers nit-picking over melodies and brainstorming lyrics at her home recording studio in California. The film plays in Toronto through Thursday before heading to other cities.

After the film, Nicks told a movie theatre full of fans that Stewart sees a new chapter in her career.

"He wants me to have video screens, like a big room of video screens where it's all my whole life (up there). And I (said): 'Dave, I'm not Barbra Streisand'," Nicks said smiling. "But maybe. Maybe someday."

She notes that her solo shows already feature a lot of talking, as opposed to the hit-laden concerts with her band Fleetwood Mac.

"It's very different. Fleetwood Mac's much more sophisticated and grownup and my show is just like a big slumber party in an auditorium. And I tell everybody the meanings of all these new songs. Because that's how I draw people in," says Nicks, who turns 65 on May 26.

After the movie, Nicks took questions from audience members, recounting the origins of her steadfast determination to be a star and dark days surrounding the recording of "Rumours."

"It wasn't really a pleasant experience," she says.

"Lindsey (Buckingham) and I had pretty much just really broken up, and we'd kind of broken up off and on for a year before that. So this is 1977. None of the couples were happy... which, on one hand, really lends to the creative process."

The film includes interviews with Nicks about Fleetwood Mac's rise to fame, current sources of inspiration, childhood memories and her surprising passion for the "Twilight" franchise.

She notes that promoting the album "In Your Dreams" involved a gruelling two years of touring and promotion. In the end, it didn't amount to much.

"I didn't sell a lot of records, you guys. For me, for a big act like moi, I didn't. Worldwide I probably sold 300,000 records. It's awesome if you're an unknown artist and you have a hit single but it's not really that awesome if you're Stevie Nicks," she said.

"It's such a different age now."

"In Your Dreams" heads to Ottawa on Friday and Saturday. It reaches Winnipeg on May 2, May 3 and May 5; Saskatoon on May 13; Edmonton on May 14; Calgary on May 16; Vancouver on May 18 and 23; and Montreal from June 14 to 17.

Fleetwood Mac performs at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday. They head to Ottawa on April 23, Winnipeg on May 12, Saskatoon on May 14, Edmonton on May 15, Calgary on May 17 and Vancouver on May 19.

By Jane Srevenson Nicks chokes up talking about late mom at Toronto Q&A

Fleetwood Mac star Stevie Nicks says making her 2011 solo album In Your Dreams and the 2013 behind-the-scenes documentary of the same name was almost beside the point because the process was “so much fun.”

“I lost my mom a year and a half ago,” said the 64-year-old Nicks getting choked up during one of two Q&A’s following screenings of the documentary on Tuesday night at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto.

“And every since I lost my mother I really realized how important what you do is, and your journeys are much, much more important than what you come out with. And I look back on this year now and I think it’s so true. That’s all we were doing was making memories. There was no harsh words. There was no arugments. There was no friction ever. …I knew that we would never forget this year.”

Nicks told a packed crowd, which had included Fleetwood Mac bandmates drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie before they exited pre Q&A, that documentary director and album co-producer-co-writer Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) talked her into filming on the second day of recording by reassuring her.

“Darling, if you don’t like it, we won’t use it, and that’s a promise,” Nicks said Stewart told her. “From that moment onward, I wasn’t worried anymore and the whole thing began with little flip cameras.”

The routine was that Stewart would come to Nicks home every day between 2:00 p.m to 8:30 p.m. (they moved his martini time from 4 p.m to 8;30 p.m.) and Nicks had to get up 4 hours earlier than usual to drink coffee in bed from 9 to noon, have a bath and do avocal lesson, and down a quick breakfast before Stewart arrived.

Naturally, filming meant a little bit more “girlie work’ for Nicks.

“I had this one blouse I liked and I just stuck with it,” explained Nicks. “‘Cause if I had to think about what I was wearing every day then that would really make the filming thing very uncomfortable for me. So i didn’t. So then I had to spend a half-hour putting on makeup and I had to blow out this really long hair 2 or 3 times a week instead of once a week. So it was more work definitely but after about the first two weeks I got used to it.”

The documentary had its Canadian debut in Toronto before moving its way across the country as Fleetwood Mac also makes Canadian stops at arenas.

(In the case of Toronto at the Air Canada Centre on April 16.)

Nicks told media on the red carpet the current Fleetwood Mac show is “a big show. It’s different. I said to (guitarist) Lindsey (Buckingham), it’s disturbingly big. Because you’re in there putting on your shoes and then all of the sudden you’re out there on stage in front of 16,000 people. You have to kind of get used to that.”

Otherwise, she told the Q&A she was unaccustomed to holding a microphone as she took questions.

“Thirty-five, 40 years ago Lindsey said to me, ‘Oh, how very Las Vegas of you!’ And I never took the mic off the stand again. So when I hold the mic I feel like an idiot.”

jkmaletic 04-16-2013 01:45 PM

I don't think she's "blaming" Lindsey. I think its one of those things where someone says something to you that sticks with you for whatever reason, and you decide to change/adjust what you're doing.

Years ago my gf inadvertantly got me to stop biting my nails when she said that people may think there's something mentally wrong with me when they looked at my jacked up fingernails. Haven't bitten them since and its been 20 yrs.

The context in which she's brought it up repeatedly over the years, I think first with Jim Ladd, it's another example of what she thinks is a derisive (no doubt jealous) comment of his that inhibited her for life. If she'd had footage of it, it would have gone into the IYD documentary too.

She never says it with a "moving the mic is not my style" air about her. It's always like, "I'd like to do it and I think I could put on a really good show, if I did, but alas, he permanently stinted my growth with his meanness . . ."

Obviously, she's not going to take all of Dave's suggestions for her next solo shows, but at least he is putting ideas into her head and she could incorporate a few of them. If she not only used more video clips, but made comments about the videos (ala Crystal Visions) between songs that would be really intriguing for fans and it would give her a new way to promote her solo tour that I think might bring in bigger audiences.

It would be more like a night at the theater than a concert. The IYD Q & A sessions have probably really made her realize the potential of such a tour. She's always liked to talk and give us song intros, but now combining that with images and making it a stage show probably doesn't seem like as much of a leap as it would have a year ago.

Stevie Nicks 'In Your Dreams': Fleetwood Mac Singer's Doc Almost Foiled Due to Vanity

Posted on Apr 16th 2013 4:40PM by Sarah Kurchak for Spinner
http://www.spinner.com/2013/04/16/st...twood-mac-doc/

Toward the end of "In Your Dreams," Stevie Nicks and Dave Stewart's documentary about the making of their album of the same name which opened at Toronto's TIFF Bell Lightbox last night, Stewart muses about the magic that he experienced in that year of writing and recording with the rock 'n' roll legend and his hopes that a piece of that comes across in the film.

"I hope it brought you a little closer to Stevie's heart," he says in his closing narration.

The film certainly lives up to Stewart's expectations. The result of the producer and former Eurythmics member's almost obsessive need to film and document everything in his life, "In Your Dreams" takes viewers deep into the year-long creative process behind Nicks's 2011 album -- her first solo release in over a decade -- and just as deep into the heart of its co-writer and co-director.

With his omnipresent camera essentially becoming part of the gang, Stewart documents almost every detail of what happened from the time that Nicks asked him to produce her new album to the assembly of her band and crew (including superstar producer Glen Ballard and her Fleetwood Mac bandmates Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham) to the videos the crew made to accompany each song on the disc.

Obviously comfortable with her creative partner, Nicks opens up about almost everything. Her family, her early music history, her sometimes rocky history with Buckingham, and her current inspirations are all covered. She even waxes poetically on her love of the "Twilight" films, which were the inspiration for the song "Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream).

"I was taken with this movie because what happened to Bella absolutely happened to me," she says about Bella's post-Edward heartbreak in "New Moon."

The result of this intimate and open atmosphere is a documentary that actually does make you feel like you're part of the action, as cliched as that phrase may be. And, as it turns out, the film was only really the opening act for people who attended one of the two screenings and Stevie Nicks Q&As last night. In the flesh, the rock star was even more personable and charming.

Clad in one of her trademark flowing outfits, Nicks amiably sauntered on stage after the screening, settled into her seat and started regaling the sold out crowd with a story about the genesis of the "In Your Dreams" film, and how her own personal insecurities almost destroyed the project before it even began.

Stewart, she explained, original brought up the idea of filming the whole process when he first agreed to produce the album for her. Nicks wasn't big on the idea, as it stood in the way of all of dreams of recording and home and dressing as a complete slob.

"That means serious hair, makeup and clothes," she said, in mock horror.

In the end, though, it was "Running Down a Dream," the 2007 Tom Petty documentary, that convinced her to give the camera a shot.

"I remember the footage from Tom Petty's very, very long four-hour documentary, which I personally loved, every minute of it," she said. "But there was a part on the Traveling Wilburys that was so brilliant and it really showed the five of those guys like they were in the James Gang or something. And we got to see them for a half-hour really be who they were and just looking so handsome and playing this amazing music and then, within minutes, it seemed, two of them died. And if they hadn't have done that, what a shame that would have been."

Pop Music, Rock Music— April 16, 2013 at 10:51 am

‘We would have asked you to join Fleetwood Mac’: Stevie Nicks still gushing about Phillip Phillips

There was once a time, in the early 1970s, when Fleetwood Mac added a pair of youthful singer-songwriters in Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham to reinvigorate its sound. Now Nicks says she’s ready to pass the torch.

Speaking to Xtra during the Canadian premiere of her new In Your Dreams documentary in Toronto, Nicks was asked to name a contemporary artist that sparks her interest, and she didn’t hesitate: “You know who I really love? I love the guy who won ‘American Idol’ last year, Philip Phillips,” Nicks says in the accompanying video.

Nicks guested on the 2012 edition of ‘American Idol,’ which saw Phillips overcome a series of procedures for kidney stones to win over Jessica Sanchez. His tune “Home” quickly became the the most downloaded song ever for an ‘Idol’ winner during his coronation week.

“I went in and spent two days on that show, and I got to know them — and he reminded me so much of Lindsey,” Nicks adds. “I said to him: ‘If you were our age, and you had been around back in 1975, we would have asked you to join Fleetwood Mac.’ Absolutely.”

Fleetwood Mac is current in the midst of a new tour, with Buckingham and Nicks still serving as the catalyst. The group recently confirmed that it will also be released an EP of new material soon, the first original music to emerge from Buckingham and Nicks since 2003′s Say You Will.

Nicks credits her fans and their support or allowing her to tirelessly tour and promote “In Your Dreams” and help her make it the modern day music business success that it is. As such, she pointedly thanked those in attendance for their part in it.

“I’m not going to worry about record sales anymore and I’m not going to worry about what people think,” she said. “Because what really matters is what I think, because if I’m thinking good and I’m thinking happy, then what I do is going to turn around and make you feel good. So we just bounce off of each other. I throw the dreams out there and you throw them back at me. And that’s how we make this together. This is not anything that is done by one person. It happens because we’re a team. And you’re my team. You are. I mean that.”
That's sweet.

Stevie Nicks says it was a “million-to-one” serendipitous event that allowed her to present In Your Dreams, the documentary she co-directed with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame, at two sold-out screenings at TIFF Bell Lightbox Monday night.

“Really, seriously, what are the chances that Toronto would ask us to show this film? They didn’t know that Fleetwood Mac would have one day off here and I would be able to come to this showing,” said Nicks during the first of two post-screening Q&A sessions for the film, about the making of her 2011 solo album. “What are the chances of that?”

Fleetwood Mac plays the Air Canada Centre Tuesday night. With bandmates Mick Fleetwood and John McVie in the house to cheer her on, singer-songwriter Nicks shared insight into her art and her life with appreciative fans. They brought albums, photos and even paid tribute by imitation, like Nicks female impersonator Crystal Visions, who was outfitted in a blonde wig, flowing black dress with a sparkling shawl and a scarf-ringed tambourine.

Nicks took her time on a red carpet leading into the theatre, stopping for photos and interviews. Slim and looking younger than her 62 years, Nicks was dressed all in black with her trademark high-heeled boots, fingerless gloves and a shimmering half-moon necklace at her throat.

The film is an up-close look at Nicks’ songwriting process and, since the album was recorded in her California home, a rare look inside her life.

Working with Stewart and the added pressure of shooting a film while writing and recording an album took some getting used to, Nicks admitted. He showed up daily to start work at 2 p.m., “which was ridiculous because I don’t get up until 1 o’clock,” Nicks laughed.

So she simplified. “I wore exactly the same thing every day. It was a different top, but it was a closetful of these black tops made by (New York designer) Morgane Le Fay. I didn’t want to think about what I was wearing.”

Nicks made several jokes at her own expense during the brief Q&A session. She said that what’s onscreen, the portrait of an uncompromising artist who has a stellar ear, a silly side and a stubborn streak, is true to who she is. “If you know me, if you had known me for the last 35 years, you would say, ‘That’s really her. That’s the way she really is.’”

But she became quiet and her voice quavered when Nicks talked about her mother, Barbara Nicks, who died at age 84 in December 2011.

“Ever since I lost my mother, I really realized how important what you do is and that your journeys are much, much more important than what you come out with,” she said, adding her mom often reminded her during the making of In Your Dreams to enjoy the moment when creating the album.

“It’s a journey,” said Nicks. “You’re just making memories. That’s all you’re doing.”

In Your Dreams screenings continue until Thursday at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

Two things: I did notice she wore the same outfit for most of the movie and I wonder if Margi Kent is jealous of Le Fay's designs worn by Stevie?

Most of them just copy and paste stories anyway. They are hardly interested in fact checking. So, if an error appears one place, it will be repeated 20 more times without them checking anything.

Bob Welch told me that one time he just made up a birth date for this interview. I don't know why he did it, although he explained. I just forgot. And from that time since, for DECADES, his birthday is listed all over as being on 2 different dates, only one of them the correct one. But based on one interview the date has been printed as wrong a hundred times.

"It's very different. Fleetwood Mac's much more sophisticated and grown-up and my show is just like a big slumber party in an auditorium. And I tell everybody the meanings of all these new songs. Because that's how I draw people in," says Nicks, who turns 65 on May 26.

After the movie, Nicks took questions from audience members, recounting the origins of her steadfast determination to be a star and dark days surrounding the recording of Rumours.

"It wasn't really a pleasant experience," she says.

"Lindsey (Buckingham) and I had pretty much just really broken up, and we'd kind of broken up off and on for a year before that. So this is 1977. None of the couples were happy... which, on one hand, really lends to the creative process."

The film includes interviews with Nicks about Fleetwood Mac's rise to fame, sources of inspiration, childhood memories and her surprising passion for the Twilight franchise.

She notes that promoting the album In Your Dreams involved a gruelling two years of touring and promotion. In the end, it didn't amount to much.

"I didn't sell a lot of records, you guys. For me, for a big act like moi, I didn't. Worldwide I probably sold 300,000 records. It's awesome if you're an unknown artist and you have a hit single but it's not really that awesome if you're Stevie Nicks," she says.

"It's such a different age now."

In Your Dreams reaches Winnipeg on May 2, May 3 and May 5.

Fleetwood Mac performs at the MTS Centre on May 12.

Right, I know she looks young.

I don't understand why the media is getting her age wrong when it's a very easy thing to fact check - first Oprah, and now this.

 Oh Stevie. That's ONE record. In this day and age it's damn respectable. Not only that it's one of the best, most consistent records you've ever made. And you know it.

Nicks told a packed crowd, which had included Fleetwood Mac bandmates drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie before they exited pre Q&A,.”

I love that Mick and especially John showed up. How sweet of them!

In Your Dreams 2˝ stars out of 5

Starring: Stevie Nicks, Dave Stewart

Directed by: Dave Stewart and Stevie Nicks

Running time: 100 minutes

Parental guidance: No problems

Fans of the singer Stevie Nicks — none of whom could possibly be bigger fans than Stevie Nicks herself, it appears — will be in heaven with In Your Dreams, a documentary about the yearlong project to record her 2011 solo album. It’s all there: the inspirations, the moments of musical serendipity, the day Reese Witherspoon dropped by and gave her a title for one of the tunes, the many, many scenes of Nicks writing or singing or talking or just hanging out in her lush California home, being artistic.

Other, lesser fans will have to make do with serendipitous moments of our own: the voice-over when Nicks expresses the wish that In Your Dreams will inspire younger audiences “to go back to the old ways and start over. This is our prayer.” Or the magical moment when, after writing the lyrics to Italian Summer at a hotel in Italy, she gives the hand-written manuscript to the front desk clerk and tells him, “Some day this is going to be very important.”

In fact, Italian Summer is a good song, one of many we get to enjoy in excerpts from the music videos that also festoon this vanity project. The film, like the album, is produced by Nicks and Dave Stewart, the Eurythmics guitarist, who joins Nicks and several other top-notch musicians. These include Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, the alma mater for Nicks, plus her longtime backup singers, in whom, she speculates, the public finds “comfort in that love that we have as three very strong women.”

And maybe they do. In Your Dreams features endorsements from members of the public, including an American sailor whose life was altered by Soldier’s Angel. Nicks wrote that song after touring Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and seeing the wounded warriors, one of a few genuine moments of emotion in the film. In Your Dreams would be impossible if it wasn’t for the fact that Nicks — whose throaty growl hasn’t lost much of its power — is a talented rock singer and Stewart is, as she informs us, “one of the greatest and grandest guitar players.”

The film only touches on her childhood and early career: this isn’t a portrait of the artist, it’s a diary of the art, including the volumes of her writings that she gave to Stewart as possible lyrics (at one point she compares herself to Bob Dylan). There’s a touching reminiscence surrounding the song New Orleans, written six days after Hurricane Katrina and inspired by TV clips of a young boy who looks at the camera and — with shocking and moving frankness — says, “We just need some help sent here. And it’s just pitiful.”

The Witherspoon song comes when the actress tells Stewart he can stay at her condo in Nashville. “It’s cheaper than free,” she says, and the next thing you know, Stewart and Nicks have turned that idea into a love song. Another factoid: Lady From the Mountain was inspired by the Twilight movie New Moon, in particular the part where Bella is abandoned by the love of her life, which also happened to Nicks. Hopefully, she says, someone will hear that song and think, “The same thing happened to Stevie Nicks and she’s still alive.”

In your dreams. OK, OK. But she started it.
