5 least favorite songs by each writer

I apologize if this is groansomely old hat around here, but I'm working on a paper and need to procrastinate for just 15 minutes so I thought I'd throw it up in case anyone bites.

I was curious what everyone's least favorite band songs were by each of the three Rumours era writers. You can include pre- and post- Rumours era songs by each writer if you want, you don't have to order if you can't, and if 5 is too restricting or too much do however many you need to properly express your dislike ;) Here's mine:

LB
1. Family Man (TITN)
2. Goodbye Angel (25YTC)
3. What's the World Coming To (SYW)
4. Caroline (TITN)
5T. Tango in the Night (TITN)
5T. Come (SYW)

CM
Never Make Me Cry (Tusk)
Skies the Limit (BTM)
Save Me (BTM)
All Over Again (Time)
I Do (Time)

SN
1. Welcome to the Room...Sara (TITN)
2. Say You Will (SYW)
3. Sweet Girl (Dance)
4. Illume (SYW)
5. Silver Girl (SYW)
(I'm irrational about "When I See You Again".)

GREAT TOPIC!!!
Lindsey - Not That Funny
Empire State
Teen Beat (WTH was that???)
Make Me A Mask
Come
Christine - Sugar Daddy (VOMIT)
Oh Daddy (More Vomit)
Honey Hi (how is this a song?)
Never Make Me Cry ( again SO short it's like 1/3 of a demo??)
Temporary One
Stevie - Crystal (really because I want her to sing the lead vocal in 75)
Angel (this is my LEAST fav song of her's EVER)
Welcome to the Room...Sara(but love it 10X more than Angel)
No Questions Asked (there's NO Chorus whatsoever???)
The Second Time (i actually love this, BUT she sounds DRUNK)

tz5632 03-26-2013 08:53 AM

Christine McVie:
Mystified (Tango in the night)
Warm ways (Fleetwood Mac)
Wish you were here (Mirage)
I do (Time)
Sugar daddy (Fleetwood Mac)

Stevie Nicks:
Welcome to the room...Sara (Tango in the night) AWFUL!!!
The second time (Behind the mask)
When I see you again (Tango in the night)
Affairs of the heart (Behind the mask)
No questions asked (Greatest Hits) - I only like the bridge in that song...the rest is boring.

Lindsey Buckingham:
Can't go back (Mirage)
Teen beat (25 years / Mirage)
My little demon (The dance)
What's the world coming to (Say you will)
Fou you and I, Part 2 (Tango in the night) - I like Christine's version of that song much more (Eyes wide shut)

So far, so good :)

Christine:

KarmaContestant 03-26-2013 10:03 AM

For me, Lindsey has the most songs that I don't like, but that is because he's the one that takes the most creative liberties when recording, and is willing to do something different. With Christine, even her worst songs are not bad - they're just generic. I'm a Stevie fan at heart and I like most of her material, though I do think she's had a few Mac selections that were questionable.

Lindsey:
Save Me A Place (I really don't like whiny songs)
Oh Diane
Can't Go Back
Family Man
My Little Demon
Red Rover

Christine:
Love In Store
Skies The Limit

Stevie:
Paper Doll
No Questions Asked
Smile At You (a great song robbed of it's musical identity)

StevieNicksfann 03-26-2013 10:11 AM

Stevie -

Freedom
That's Alright
Storms
When I See You Again - although am starting to like it now.

That's it - I love every other song from her including No Questions Asked (one of my faves), Paper Doll, Say You Will and even Silver Girl.

Christine -

Oh Daddy and everything from Tusk except Think About Me and Never Make Me Cry

Lindsey -

Going just by the studio albums...

Lindsey
1. Book of Love
2. That's Enough For Me
3. Miranda
4. Say Goodbye (zzz...)
5. Empire State
(honorable mention for Peacekeeper's dumb kazoo refrain)

Stevie
1. Angel (ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...)
2. Silver Girl
3. Welcome to the Room... Sara
4. Affairs of the Heart
5. That's Alright (Only song of Stevie's I've heard multiple times where I couldn't remember a note of it if you asked me)

Christine
1. Over My Head
2. Only Over You
3. Hold Me
4. Mystified (just for the xylophone)
5. Never Forget (though I don't dislike it)

Self confessed Chiffon-head . WISYA is the only Stevie-Mac song I cannot bare. I love the rest. Including the songs that seem to get a lot of stick, like "Paper Doll", "Silver Girl" and "The Second Time". I will never understand how it's possible for anybody not to love "Angel" and "That's Alright"

redbird 03-26-2013 12:12 PM

I was surprised myself that 'Save Me a Place' did not end up on my Lindsey list, but I think I am finally coming around to it. It has a quirky charm to it that at the very least keeps it from being bland.

LOL @ the kazoo refrain from 'Peacekeeper'. That's the one part of the song I really dislike, otherwise I think it's somewhere between okay and good.

Christine's was the hardest for me to do simply because she has so many damn songs, I wonder if my list would change if I did this next week. I agree that she's the most consistent and basically her "bad" songs come down to being bland. For me Lindsey's bad songs are miscalculations of medium-to-big ideas and Stevie's are where her lyrics just get really awkward.

I don't hear what any of you are saying about "Angel" la la la la la :p No but really, keep them coming.

Going solely on songs WITH Fleetwood Mac

Peter Green: NONE

Jeremy Spencer: the repetetiveness of those Elmore James things got a little tedious on Mr Wonderful, but overall, there's nothing I didn't like, taken individually.

Danny Kirwan: When You Say, When You Say, When You Say, did I mention "When You Say"?

Bob Welch: NONE

Christine McVie: NONE (well, maybe "Ricky", but that was an unfinished B-side throwaway)

Lindsey Buckingham:
Not That Funny (studio version)
Oh Diane
You & I, Part II
Come (studio version)

Stevie Nicks:
Welcome To The Room...Sara
No Questions Asked
The Second Time
Running Through The Garden
Silver Girl

Rick Vito: Stand On The Rock (there were better songs left in the can than that one that should've made the album...but, I still like that song)

Billy Burnette: NONE

Dave Mason: NONE

Bekka Bramlett: NONE

considering this was a co-write, does the same song irritate you when you think of it as Lindsey's but doesn't when you think of it as Christine's?

redbird 03-26-2013 09:20 PM

I don't believe I know "Ricky" but now I'm curious.

"Come" has me in its corner right up until it explodes all high octane like. That said I don't hate it (nor "Tango in the Night").

WatchChain 03-26-2013 09:31 PM

Wow, I'm seeing some of the best Fleetwood Mac songs listed on some of these "worst lists"..........."Oh Daddy" (one of the most haunting FM songs ever recorded), "I'm So Afraid", "Angel", "Over My Head".........

My worst songs from any FM songwriter usually appear on their solo efforts.

"Jane" and "Desert Angel" and "Soldier's Angel" rank amoung Stevie Nicks' most questionable recordings. They are so cheesy that I ALMOST love them. After the first spin of these delightful "gems", I was saying to myself, "Huh?" But, quite simply I adore Buckingham/Nicks/McVie and I would buy a recording of them snoring.....so, my opinion is not exacty objective.

I love those songs too, but it's always fun to see how differently people feel. I know there are people who love Stevie's Say You Will stuff more than I do, whereas I like a lot of her post-Tango pre-Dance stuff ("No Questions Asked", "Paper Doll", "Freedom" ... "The Second Time" is not bad, to me, but then I can find a soft spot for WISYA). I've also learned that I like retro-Lindsey (Mirage, Teen Beat, etc) way more than many

I like the album version of "Smile At You", just not as much as the demo.
And I'm a big fan of "Sugar Daddy" and "Make Me a Mask" too, I like that song more than most of Lindsey's that did make it on to Tango. And "That's Alright". And Lindsey's Tusk songs. And "Morning Rain".

But wait, what was I saying? Vive la difference ;)

Red Rover is just...weird. The last thing I ever want to hear when friends are over, and I'm playing music, is "What the heck are you listening to?". This kind of song prompts that question, and it's never asked in a good way.

Lindsey
What's The World Coming To
Family Man
Caroline
My Little Demon
Tie: Oh Diane/Empire State

Christine
Save Me - pure unadulterated medicore Christine by-the-numbers crap.
Temporary One - see above. Plus, this song makes my skin crawl. dreadful:distress:
Everywhere
Mystified
Never Make Me Cry

Stevie
No Questions Asked - When I Seeeeee you, I feeeeel you (Ugh, nails on a charkboard)
Affairs Of The Heart (mostly because of the thin production & arrangement)
Not Make Believe (The demo had more of a groove and lots of potential. The chorus is very catchy - again wish this were produced & arranged differently because ultimatley I like this song. The cold start with Stevie's gravelly voice was a bad move, as it was on Running Through The Garden & Destiny Rules imo.
Silver Girl - nice simple melody and chorus, ruined by some dreadful lyrics in the verses.

~The Highwayman (I know its not FM but since I couldn't think of another, might as well throw it in

Linds
~Second Hand News
~Murrow Turning Over In His Grave
~Pretty much anything off of Say You Will exept; Bleed To Love Her, Peacekeeper and Say Goodbye

Chris
~Temporary One
~Songbird Live (Not that its not an amazing performance but It makes me wanna fall asleep)

Stevie

1. The Second Time
2. Affairs of the Heart
3. Paper Doll
4. Welcome to the Room Sara
5. When I See You Again

Lindsey

1. Oh Diane
2. You and I (either one)
3. Eyes of the World (studio only, live could be top 5 instead ironically)
4. Cant go back
5. Miranda

Christine

1. One more night
2. Wish you were here
3. I do
4. Everywhere
5. Hold Me

Yes, I'm 100 percent positive on numbers 4 and 5 for christine. Everywhere in particular is an embarrassment compared to her dozens of masterpieces I'm not gonna list again but take a look at my top 20 in the Chris forum. And the thing is I don't hate either song. Hold me in particular is one I'd be sure to keep on if it came on the radio but they were obvious choices for her bottom 5.

You can include pre-Stevie and Lindsey songs if you want! If that's what you're getting at.

Stevie

For me the worst thing about the post-Rumours/BTM/early 90s/whatever era is the production. It makes Fleetwood Mac sound fatally bland, IMO. But I genuinely like some of the songs underneath that production, especially Chris' "Behind the Mask" and Stevie's "Freedom" (I also like Bekka's "Dreaming the Dream" but I didn't ask about her here). I would love to have live versions of some of the better songs, but since that era is like the black sheep it'll never happen I guess.

It's so funny, when I was 12 and listening to my mom's Greatest Hits '88 CD (not knowing anything about all the schisms) I looooved "No Questions Asked" Certainly more than "As Long As You Follow".

redbird 04-01-2013 09:23 PM

At the risk of causing feedback bias the stats junkie in me took a look at opinions so far.

Lindsey's most disliked songs have the least consensus (opinions are more diffuse). The top 76% of his most disliked songs are comprised of 16 different songs. 32 different songs were named, vs 28/27 for Chris/Stevie.

The top 68% of Christine's most disliked songs includes 12 different songs and the top 82% includes 17 (there's no in-between since the five songs that make the difference there are all tied).

Stevie's most disliked songs definitely have the most consensus. The top 72% of Stevie's most disliked songs includes 10 different songs. The top five most disliked Stevie songs get almost exactly 50% of her songs' votes, and her #5 most disliked song has more votes than Christine's #1 most disliked song, and only one less vote than Lindsey's #1 most disliked song.

LB
10 - Empire State
9 - Family Man
7 (5) - Red Rover, Come, Oh Diane, What's the World Coming To, That's Enough For Me
6 (4) You And I pt 2, Make Me a Mask, Can't Go Back, Not That Funny
5 (5) - My Little Demon, Murrow Turning Over..., Book of Love, That's All For Everyone, Save Me a Place
4 (2) - Caroline, Teen Beat

CM
8 (2) - Only Over You, Honey Hi
7 - Skies the Limit
6 (4) - Mystified, Never Make me Cry, Oh Daddy, Sugar Daddy
5 (2)- Warm Ways, Save Me
4 (3) - Never Forget, I Do, Temporary One

SN
13 - Welcome to the Room
12 - When I See You Again
9 (2) - No Questions Asked, The Second Time, Silver Girl
6 - Illume
5 (3) - That's Alright, Paper Doll, Affairs of the Heart
3 - Running Through the Garden

This is given 26 participants, not all of whom have listened to all the same records, not all of whom are necessarily operating on the same criteria for "least favorite".

(On a personal note, I'm pretty surprised about "That's Enough For Me" and to an extent "Not That Funny" as I always thought that Tusk is considered Lindsey's apogee, but I suppose it's more polarizing than I assumed? Also kind of surprised about "Honey Hi", it seems pretty inoffensive to me at worst, I wonder what makes it worse than so many other Chris songs. I'm going to pretend not to see "That's Alright" on this list at all.)
