Amazing newly surfaced rare video int. w/Mick & Stevie(White Album)

vivfox 03-14-2013 08:42 PM

You guys are gonna LOVE this!

I would guess it is Rhiannon that became the unexpected hit single they are talking about here. Did you notice how Mick points to his nose when telling the reporter how they have the energy to keep going at such a grueling pace?

redbird 03-14-2013 09:35 PM

Mick Fleetwood has got to have the most rectangular face I've ever seen.

Neat to know how "Rhiannon" was weeded out as the lead single. Thanks for unearthing that and posting.

michelej1 03-14-2013 09:52 PM

Ha! Stevie's shoes and socks!

Michele

michelej1 03-14-2013 09:58 PM

As far as a few of them not having the right amount of sleep, I guess that's why they weren't there.

It was. They weren't talking about the lead single like the other poster said. They were talking about a song on the album that was originally not intended to be a single(Rhiannon) that ended up being released as a single because many radio stations were already playing it. A long time ago in some interview Stevie said that she never intended for Rhiannon to be a single in case it bombed. She said she would never be able to accept it being a failure.

SteveMacD 03-15-2013 12:32 AM

I thought they were talking about OMH, too, especially when they say "the big hit single" (as in only one single), and how it was not the first song that Mick thought sounded like it should be a single. (Rhiannon, IMO, SCREAMS single.)

redbird 03-15-2013 01:15 AM

Speaking of not having enough sleep! I forgot totally that OMH was the lead-off single and assumed otherwise. Sorry!

BAD, BAD redbird!!!! You had me ALL confused with your lead-single post! (JK) i'll survive!

HomerMcvie 03-15-2013 03:10 AM

I assumed off the bat, that they meant Rhiannon. Which to me, was the best "single" on the album.

Nickingham 03-15-2013 04:48 AM

Wow... what a rare treat! It's nice to hear these two talk about touring and Rhiannon becoming the single (even though OMH is just as good!). Too bad Lindsey, Chris and John weren't there. Would've liked to hear what they had to say. And lol @ Stevie's socks and shoes. She looks so cute!
I wonder what she has around her neck... (Nevermind. I think they're microphones.)

Thank you for sharing this Viv!

Stevie's socks and shoes just made my day.

deribish 03-15-2013 09:29 AM

Im totally digging Mick's outfit. I could totally pull that look off.

Morgana 03-15-2013 10:36 AM

Not sure why but I have not been able to get this video to play, it's a black screen and the spinner spins, never loads. :( I tried to no avail yesterday. It would be great if it could be posted on youtube, maybe then it might work.

Interesting how quiet Stevie was in these early interviews compared to later. She barely talks and Mick just rambles on. it'd be funny to put this video side by side with the recent Stevie-Mick-Lindsey videos where Stevie never lets Mick get a word in edgewise

FierySequences 03-15-2013 11:30 AM

great video, thx for posting!

It would be interesting which other song the band was considering for a single. My money is on an LB song.

I don't think they were talking about the first single off the album, because Mick discussed a slow burn or a sleeper. Like a song that was not released as a single, but took off because the listeners made it popular and took off a while after the album was released too. So, I don't think it was OMH or SYLM he was referencing.

I think it's OMH here. Chris said way back that the band never expected that song to be a hit single. She tossed it on the album almost as filler. I think AM radio play made it a hit between September and December 1975.

In this video (cool video, by the way), they're probably still on tour in 1975 (Stevie mentions having started in May). OMH was the only official single that year. Rhiannon and SYLM were singles halfway through 1976, when the band was on its second round of touring and Mick had his signature beard and mustache.

The band also said they never expected Rhiannon to be a hit because it was so weird.

aleuzzi 03-15-2013 04:40 PM

It could be either OMH or Rhiannon as neither of them were thought of by the band as songs with single potential.

But when Mick said the song was kind of creeping up on the radio, it made me think he was referring to OMH. Rhiannon was a blast right out of the gate.

KenshiMaster16 03-15-2013 04:51 PM

My God I'm always so taken away by how amazingly beautiful Stevie was back then (and pretty much still is) but she was a BOMBSHELL back then.

blinker12 03-15-2013 06:14 PM

And actually, wasn't "Warm Ways" (inexplicably) the first single released from the album? So I guess they thought that was the obvious choice, only it didn't really go anywhere.
I too am hearing this as being about OMH. By the time of Rhiannon, they would have already had a hit.

.

I always thought this, too was the first single. Apparently it was only the "first" single in the UK. But I have always thought of it being the lead single that didn't go anywhere.

Macfanforever 03-15-2013 06:50 PM

Thanks Viv for sharing the video. They look so young there.

STUNNING. I was twelve, but I'm still a bit confused when I see her at this age....

jcalzaretta 03-16-2013 11:23 AM

Great point Mick said. Great single can bore people two months later. Who knew. If this is about Rhiannon. 38 years later and people still love hearing this song on the radio. I remember seeing a good jukebox. Rhiannon was number one most played. You just never know.

So true, and insightful on Micks part. I can't count the times this past year I have walked into anywhere and heard "Weee..are Never, Ever, Ever...."
After about the fifth time I wanted to drive ice-picks through my eardrums

I feel the reason Stevie is so low key in those early interviews was because she was still the "new kid in town," still adjusting the sudden public profile, and her role in the band dynamic. Soon, as she became popular, and established herself as a significant force in band, she became far more dominant and outspoken.

cantgoback 03-16-2013 04:51 PM

I assumed they meant Rhiannon and that's why the started talking to Stevie first. OMH sounds like a single not a song that would become a single.

Yes, she definitely didn't feel she had the power then that she clearly knows she has now.

michelej1 03-16-2013 11:17 PM

Mick mentioned that Stevie felt insecure after the White album debuted, because she knew the band hadn't wanted her in the first place and she still wasn't sure of her standing and he pointed out to her that her vocals were very good on OMH and he felt they contributed to its success and, oh hey, Rhiannon and Landslide weren't bad.

The thing that has always bugged me about that whole "they only wanted Lindsey" thing is that it makes it sound as if she joined Fleetwood Mac against the band's will. It's not that they didn't WANT her. They wanted Lindsey for his guitar playing but didn't know the situation. Once they knew, they were fine with having Stevie in the band. I think she was over-thinging things.

skcin 03-18-2013 02:01 PM

Nice find. The clothes are a hoot, but Stevie's top half looks a bit disheveled & sloppy. Not very glamorous for the future Queen of R&R. :D

Was Stevie even on the album version of OMH? I certainly can't hear her. Perhaps Mick was referring to the live performance?

It's never been about the band not wanting her, it's just that they weren't looking for her! They found a guitar player they wanted and needed, and Stevie just came with the package. She was an unexpected surprise, but when they heard the vocal harmonies the three voices could create, it was easy to accept Stevie.

Christine said she liked that she wasn't the only girl in the band anymore, and it sort of balanced the equation of guys and the girls. Stevie also brought a sexual appeal, and Christine was happy about it, since it deflected the media focus off her in that manner. Christine never sought or wanted that kind of attention. The infamous reply Christine gave when a reporter asked her what it was like to be a sex symbol in the rock world, she said "I don't know, ask Stevie."

fairydust75 03-18-2013 06:52 PM

I would imagine that Stevie's fixation on "they only wanted Lindsey" came from perhaps: ............
Excerpts from various arguments heard outside hotel rooms circa 1975-77:

".....You don't want to be my wife, you don't want to be my girlfriend..........."

" You wouldn't even be in a band if it wasn't for me. I'm the one they wanted, they would of never have asked you to join if I hadn't insisted on it."

The identity of the male voice has not been verified but is somewhat high-pitched and condescending in nature some would say cyclic in overall dictation and tone.

I viewed that more as Mick pointing to the dark circles around his tired looking eyes......of course, I could be wrong.....Thanks to overdocumented accounts, we all know what the band was doing to tap into "energy". I just didn't view that clip as Mick pointing to his nose.....

No, I didn't view it as a sly reference to snorting either.
