list songs you love from your non-fave FM songwriters
 

FM fan or a fan of individual artist who happen to be a member of FM?

we were discussing in Tango vs Mirage thread what would be the definition of a FM fan... would someone who loves just one of the 3 rumours-era songwriters, even though you may love their FM songs more than their solo songs, be considered a FM fan or their solo fan? i'd say if you like that individual artist better as a part of FM than solo, then you would be in a FM category... agree, disagree?


either way, TheWILDheart was nice enough and compiled list of non-SN songs that he/she loves... so i owe my list and was wondering how such lists of others who have a preference for one of the FM 3 rumours-era songwriters would look like? i'm going with just Rumours-are songs since we are on Rumours era board.

here's my list of songs that i love, even though they were not written by LB:

Christine's 80's songs are the categorical lesser for me, but I can't say that Christine is a disliked songwriter at all, nor even least favorite. Because I love her 70's stuff consistently and don't even know how I'd began to compare to the different ethos of the later era.

So if 80's Christine McVie is my least favorite songwriter then a song that I love by 80's Christine McVie is "Little "Lies".

so you would say you are primarily an FM fan (since you seem to imply you love SN's and LB's FM songs equally, as well as CM's 70s songs), not a fan of a particular songwriter who draws you into liking FM as a whole?

I came to Fleetwood Mac from whatever was on the radio, and whatever was on the radio was a whole lot of Rumours and the white album and the hits from later on, plus some solo Stevie stuff. Because of that, I know more of Stevie on her own than the others, but I might like the others' solo stuff as much/more if I explored them more. Right now I'm spending my time marinating in the Welch era, because I didn't know it at all before. Solo Lindsey, solo Christine, Chicken Shack era Christine, that's going to have to wait.

It might be that I'll find that I have a songwriter that I prefer over the others, but I don't really know that right now (and I'm not really in a rush; it'll come to me when it comes, if it comes). I do have a special attachment to Stevie because she writes and talks about things I can relate to as a woman, like many of her devotees I appreciate her vulnerable/steely dichotomy and while I've never been in rock'n'roll, she has always been notable as a girly girl in a man's world, she was aggressive but also very feminine ("airy fairy", etc) unlike Christine who could be one of the guys. In my own way I can relate to that.

But that doesn't mean I find her the superior songwriter. I guess right now I think I feel like at her best she is the best lyricist, and at her best she is (was) the best vocalist, but not the best composer, nor, am I thinking, the most consistent.

And my favorite Mac song is a Lindsey song, and no other song really comes close to the experience and attachment I have to that song, despite my considerable admiration for them.

So yeah I guess I'm a Mac fan first, even though I don't consider the three equal in every way and I find Stevie more visible and thus more familiar. As far as I can tell so far, I think they are all at their best with each other.* Sorry for the wall of text response.

*ETA: At least, they were. Maybe they don't bring out the best in each other any more, I don't know. Time will tell.

I have Christine's Chicken Shack work but it doesn't engage me. I might not have given it enough of a chance. But I have to say that's not in my wheelhouse.

My fav. is Stevie and yes not all her songs are great, but i think she has the greatest SONGWRITING abilities and i'm a fan of her solo stuff.

Even though Stevie introduced me to the band, I agree with Redbird, that the 5 bring out the best in each other. I have learned to appreciate/love the band as a whole. Needless to say, Chris is greatly missed.

:laugh: :sorry: sorry guys - considering i was shown the door out of rumours forum by a self-declared chiff but also Mac fan earlier today because i dared to say that i really am a fan of just one rumours-lineup FM member, whether he's solo or with Mac (or even better: Men of Mac!!), and not necessarily an FM fan, i gotta play it on target now. :D :p which means rumours-era songs as defined by these boards.

so i guess SteveMacD, since you don't really like that much any of the rumours-era songwriters (i think you prefer Welch-era Mac? my apologies if i got all that wrong!), i'd love to see the list of any rumours-era songs you love. :thumbsup:

if you want to pick through Welch-era covers etc however, i guess that goes to pre-rumours forum. :shrug:

Just as I was hitting my teen years, Fleetwood Mac in its Buckingham-Nicks incarnation hit it big and so I will always feel a certain connection with them. And the group featured two women songwriters, which was still rare in the 1970s.

I wouldn't call myself a huge Fleetwood head, but I do consider their first four albums to be masterpieces, and Lindsey Buckingham, Christina McVie and Steve Nicks to be masters of pop song writing.

Unlike the Beatles, with two great songwriters and Harrison a distant third (except for the occasional It's All Too Much) the Mac had three equally talented writers.

McVie is technically the leading writer, if you base your assessment on their Greatest Hits album.

The tally is McVie with 8 hits, Nicks with 5 and Buckingham with 3. However, three of McVie's hits are co-written, including my favorite McVie song "Hold Me" and Nicks co-wrote "No Questions Asked."

Except for The Chain, written by all the Macs, the three Mac composers rarely collaborated. Most surprising, Buckingham/Nicks share only one co-writing credit that I've found, and that was on their self-titled album released before they joined Fleetwood Mac. McVie and Buckingham collaborated a few times, most notably for World Turning, one of their better songs, although not one of their biggest hits.


Stevie Nicks

Nicks is a pretty woman and she writes pretty songs - and of a consistently high quality even when they aren't big hits. At worst, she overplays the whole witchy-woman thing, must egregiously on Gypsy. So it's hard to pick my favorite Nicks song. Of course there's Rhiannon, which was their first monster hit but I've heard it so many times over the years it hardly registers any more.


I find her Sara to be most irresistible though - especially when it kicks it with drums and piano on the transition from the intro to the main tune. It also highlights Nick's charming female empowerment inclinations, her tendency to celebrate womanliness and female friendships. The song is allegedly about a friend of Nicks': "Sara, you're the poet in my heart."

Christine McVie

McVie is the most formally trained musician of the three composers and her tunes are very piano-centric which I love. Her songs are more straight-up traditionalist pop tunes, pretty much exclusively about romantic relationships. When she's good she's great, but she can write fairly uninspired stuff, like "Sugar Daddy." And my favorite tune by her is co-written. But still, what she lacks in originality and consistency she makes up for in pop-essence purity. Listen to the piano opening of Hold Me and you'll see. And the vocal harmonies are to die for.

Lindsey Buckingham

Buckingham has crafted some solid tunes, from Go Your Own Way, to Monday Morning, to I'm So Afraid, but as the most experimental songwriter of the trio can come up with some pretty iffy songs. But that experimentalism paid off, big time, with Tusk, a tune I have adored since the first time I heard and and which is without a doubt my favorite Fleetwood Mac song. One Tusk is worth five or six Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow's in my opinion. And the appearance of the USC Marching Band on the track adds to the fun.

That I "like" or "love"?? Well I'm definitely a Lindsey fan so here we go!!

I love work from all of the writers, from Green through Burnette, though rarely everything each writer has written.

Christine is my favorite, Stevie a close second. As a songwriter, I think Welch is the most versatile and accomplished, even if vocally he can't always pull off what he does. Lindsey, on the other hand, is a less sophisticated songwriter who can pull off pretty much everything he does because he has the right charisma.

Danny Kirwan, at his best, is an exquisite writer and performer. Not a great vocalist, but he knows now to use whatever he has.

If I eliminate Christine and Stevie from the list, I get this:
