Lyrics that go "clunk"

BATB: You, well you're something to see

Paper Doll: Whow we were off the wall

Rhiannon: She rules her life like a fine skylark

Rooms on Fire: and he hated to be separated from that picture, no

And hundreds more...:]

False, Rhiannon is perfect.

In my opinion, of course.

But I'll raise you:

Any time Stevie rhymes a word with the same word - ie, "love" in If Anyone Falls, "this" in Wide Sargasso Sea, "glass" in You Can't Fix This, "words" in ELY

"Oh yes he loved her but he was still an Englishman" - Wide Sargasso Sea (about half of this song, honestly..)

"She was so not that girl" - Everybody Loves You

Machu 02-22-2013 08:03 PM

And the days became worse,
For the ones she had lost
Children of the world,
The forgotten chimpanzee
In the eyes of the world,
You have done so much for me

ejof17 02-22-2013 08:23 PM

And she stares at the stairs. There are so many things to stare at these days.

WildHearted 02-22-2013 08:27 PM

"'Cause the whole thing's phony" - Bella Donna (as much as I love it..)

drzubritsky 02-22-2013 08:54 PM

I remember Rolling Stone's scathing review of The Wild Heart singled out this line from "Gate and Garden", "...do I love you, well I always did...", complaining that there was no dance of souls, nothing to lure us into caring. While I agree that GAG isn't a very good song, it's odd that RS would choose that rather innocuous line as a lyrical clunker.

For pure clunkers, some that come to mind are:
Touched by an Angel: "Everything was the same except everything was different"
WISYA: "...and she stares at the stairs, there are many things to stare at these days..." (very amateurish sounding alliteration)
Illume: "I am a cliff dweller from the old school"
Jane: "children of the world, the forgotten chimpanzee..." (probably the most obvious example and a line that unfortunately sinks an otherwise touching and pretty song)

Maybe not a clunker, but did the line "...in the middle of my room I did not hear from you" ever strike anyone else as being a very oddly worded statement?

mitzo 02-22-2013 09:21 PM

Goodbye Baby - yes I was outspoken

Kick It - I'm waited for in Egypt, just something I must do

Rose Garden - roses dangling down to the ground

GHW - lousy lovers

Sisters of the Moon - many black widow spiders make more sound than she

Sara - and a starling flew for days

Beautiful Child - when I was only ten

I love all of these lines (not in and of themselves, but in the context of the song obviously). :distress:

The verses of Trouble in Shangri la

I Miss You - the invisible girl, that was my name

 I think they're pretty great. However, I hate how she rhymes "sea" with "honey."

Not Make Believe - It hurts my self esteem, it hurts my everything; I am reeling... ooh, it hurts my feelings

One More Big Time... - Undercover music lover

Paper Doll - She refused to wear her coat

Listen to the Rain - You're a frontliner. Phantom of the Opera. Basically, the whole song.

Love is Like a River - I haven't burned a candle in a real long time

Two Kinds of Love - I talked to my famous friend last night

Lilyfan 02-22-2013 10:35 PM

All of these seem so hilarious when taken out of context. God, I love my Stevie.

I always liked this line for some reason. I have NO idea but I'm assuming this song is about Stevie/Lindsey and the reformation of Fleetwood Mac around The Dance era (Please someone correct me if I'm wrong). I think it is a neat line because it's like they are together again so in that way it's the same and familiar and maybe great in the moment but in the end, there's really no way it will ever be the same.

I think at one point Stevie said something about it having to do with AIDS?

Machu 02-22-2013 11:00 PM

That's a surprise. Although I have always wondered who the chorus was about. I'll stick with my interpretation though because it makes me happier. LOL

Would you change your mind
At the very last moment
Would you say "stop" for a second
I think you better think for a minute

The correct lyrics: And a black widow spider makes more sound than she

Does the right words change the meaning for you?

vivfox 02-22-2013 11:59 PM

Long nets of white cloud my memory.

She dreamed of her wanton luxury.

michelej1 02-23-2013 01:27 AM

I actually like NMB "hurts my everything." I think the language matches the message and captures that feeling you get when someone can hurt you in ways you thought you'd outgrown. All the childish pain resurfaces. Old buttons get pushed that you no longer thought even worked any more. I'm mature. I'm successful. How is it you have the power to make me feel like I'm 12 and insecure again. Given the import of the song, it's fitting that it uses childish language to describe it.

I hate the famous ones: Silver Girl and Jane. Almost too common to mention.

Although I like Love Changes, in a way I think these lyrics are too literal. The car crash simile is too graphic, so I'm thinking more about seeing an actual car accident on the road than I am about the emotion of walking away from a relationship. I'm kind of torn. In a way, I do think the words work, but in a way I don't:

When love changes in the flash of an eye,
it leaves people burning by the side of the road.
You stand there you got nothing to hold

I used to refer to this song as the 'How Many Broadway Musicals Can Stevie Fit Into A Song?' Song because of that line and the 'There's no Beauty and the Beast here,' line.
A shame, really, because with more work it could have been a good song. I do have to admit that the 1991 version is a tad better.

At least this makes sense and is very dramatic and romantic. :]

what's romantic about a well? Except maybe pushing the ex down one....

Also, this line isn't poorly written, but it's so annoying...

"what I seem to touch these days has turned to gold. What I seem to want, well you know I find a way..."

On Ice 02-23-2013 10:07 AM

Her most unbelievable lyric she ever wrote: "I sing for the things money can't buy"...uhm, not quite Stevie.

Worst references in songs for me are those pesky doors and stares/stairs, (although I forgive her for sitting in her chair for months just staring), the many doors in hallways, staring at stairs, having someone drag her up the stairs, sets of doors being the colour of honey, downstairs where the big old house is hers. Yuck.

Stairs and doors and floors and halls and walls and castles and corridors and towers and houses with long nets (curtains) of white

mitzo 02-23-2013 10:22 AM

Nightbird: I wear boots all summer long

Bella Donna: the whole thing's phoney

all of Rooms on Fire

Street Angel: I fell down the stairs, a broken rag doll

Storms: my body tries to cry

New Orleans: I wanna brush by Ann Rice/I wanna wear beads

Love Is: she fell to the floor

Wide Sargassso Sea: you fell to the floor when you saw this

GypsySorcerer 02-23-2013 11:07 AM

Thousand Days - Such words to her over the phone.

Whole Lotta Trouble -
'Til the dream followed through
'Til the end of the dream
And the dream came true

Do we dare post lyrics from demos?

Oh yeh, I forgot about this one. It always reminded me of "following through". Thanks for that, Stevie...

See, I thought that for ages, until I read someone on here suggest it could be "she stares at the stares" linking it to her being in rehab. Totally flipped the whole song for me

I had never considered that....would make it forgivable then LOL! But "she stares at their glares" would be better then.

Thank you, GypsySorcerer

This goes along with When I See You Again:

And the dream says I want you
And the dream is gone
So she stays up nights on end
Well at least there is a dream left....

----"Children of the world, the forgotten chimpanzee"

I know she didn't write this one, but something about -----"go down to the laundromat, maybe your sister is there"................

I'm sorry, but I cannot imagine Stevie Nicks sitting in a landromat.....or even doing her own laundry for that matter........

Oddly,I consider those as some of her best poetic lines!

I find that sometimes the confusion in Stevie's lyrics come from how she sometimes phrases her lyrics. See if this makes more sense:

Stand back in the middle of my room -
I did not hear from you!

Another lyric along those lines:

Come in, out of the darkness you are in love with
And I'm ready to sail

I love the song Sable On Blonde, but find the line "Just how deep do you hold that dream in your hands in each night" rather weak, odd or even slightly pornographic.

holidayroad 02-24-2013 11:33 AM

Well you're a front liner
You put it all on the line

Ooh, you're consistent
Hey, and that's good
And you're persistent
Well I am overcome

DashingDan 02-24-2013 12:31 PM

Two Clunks of Love
"You say I hate this"
*CLUNK*

"..Well I talked to my famous friend last night
My third day up well, his second night-er
He says I don't know how you do what you do
how do you let the world in
Well I say well there's no way out
Then I just play out the game
Well the two of us Widow and a Dove"
*MEGA CLUNK*

DashingDan 02-24-2013 12:44 PM

Love is Dangerous
(I can only assume she wrote the following...)
"Standing at the crossroads
Ooh yeah, this is wild"
*CLUNK*

I always saw this as someone who is praying every night before going to bed, in the way that one holds their hands together in reverence of God.

Ok. This doesn't bother me. In fact, I kind of like the oddity of it. But as long as you're talking about rooms and hearing, I think If Anyone Falls is funny.

I hear a voice in the room next to mine
Feels good sounds good
Closes the door from behind
And another voice comes thru the door

I feel like she's hearing something going on in the hotel room next to her. But how does she know the unseen person closes the door from behind? Well, I guess it's behind (or more distant) than the first voice she heard. Also, if the guy she was hearing in the hotel room was alone, until the other voice came along, why could she hear him. Who was he talking to when he was by himself?

Anyway, the screwy words create illicit images in my head, involving eavesdropping on another couple and wanting to be involved in what's going on next door. Those images don't hurt though. They enhance it. Gives it an air of mystery and a sense of the forbidden.

"Until she, herself..."

I love it, but I still just laugh every time.

And, then there's the immortal:

" Well, I went today
Maybe I will go again tomorrow
Yeah, yeah, well, the music there
Well, it was hauntingly familiar"

"Well, I see you doing
What I try to do for me"

It is awesome in its clunkiness, as most of her songs are. Two more:

"Nobody knows, knows nothing 'bout it"

"No explanations and I tell you no
You say nothing"
