HUGE Mac hype at the moment
 

Hey folks,

I've noticed a LOT of Fleetwood Mac hype of late, especially here in the UK. Lots of press, huge ticket sales, Rumours up the top of the charts etc. Much more hype and excitement around the Mac than in 2009. I even caught 2 colleagues talking about F'Mac in the canteen at work the other day following Mick's appearance on Top Gear. I have to say, dispite making for some stressful concert ticket booking, I am certainly enjoying the excitement and the credit that the Mac are getting - there wasn't even this much of a buzz in 2003 when SYW came out.

I was wondering, what is it like elsewhere in the world? Is the same happening the US and Europe? Same hype and sell out concerts?

It is hard to tell. In the US, they needed to offer a lot more shows due to demand. So that is good. Rumours is back on US charts but only at 40. I say only but for a record that is 36 years, that is great. It is charting on ITunes, which to me, means being introduced to younger viewers.

During the Superbowl, Budweiser used over a minute of the song Landslide in the ad. It was voted online as the best commerical. You heard no other voice or sound other than Stevie singing Landslie. The single is also selling on Itunes again.

There was a show - the Americans, which during its debut, featured heavily the song Tusk. It played for at least a third of the show, which was awesome. Parts were the original song and others were musical variations.

So - they are getting recognition. And of course Stevie has been everywhere and with everyone recently with Lady Antebellum and Dave Grohl. It is very exicting.

Now let's get Buckingham Nicks released on CD!

I am hearing them EVERY morning on the local classic rock station. They are promoting the crap out if them. It's great! I don't know how they are fairing on the radar of casual fans, but I definitely notice the awareness level being raised.

I've heard local djs promoting the tour.

Also I heard something about FM and Beyonce touring together. :confused:. I was half asleep when I heard this. Has anybody else heard something simaliar?

No, no. I think you probably just got confused since you were sleepy - there were a lot of people mentioning same sentence only because both Beyonce and Fleetwood Mac have announced huge World Tours for 2013 right around the same time.

That would be one helluva strange crowd. :nod:

I mentioned I had tickets today at Uni then my friends were talking about Mick on top gear. One friend wasn't sure if she'd heard of them until someone sang one line of go your own way.

It's great that there's a buzz and a vibe around them.

Both Beyonce's and Mac's concerts went on sale today in Holland and I believe Belgium To. I managed To get tickets for The Amsterdam as welk as Antwerpen shows. I happen to live juist about richt in between both cities.

Tickets went fast. I believe both shows are (nearly) sold out. So yes, it looks Like kinds buzz overheen as wel.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased and all but i loved it and especially this place being a little niche. D'ya get what i mean? u picking up what i'm putting down? :cool:

I've mentioned this on a couple of other threads, the hype and interest in them is off the scale in the UK!

There was nothing like this interest in 2003 or 2009. I know Mick has done a lot of press and the Rumours re-issues have been released, but I'm still blown away by how popular they seem to be at the moment.

The fact that NME and other mags that usually cater for student types are giving them so much coverage must be helping. I think there'll be a lot of under 30s at these shows.

I'm so glad they are getting the credit they deserve as I've always felt they've been a bit overlooked here given their body of work.

That would be weird. I bet that the guys wouldn't be able to play any songs cause that would be too fixed on Stevie. :p

See I think they missed out on a golden clam....They were HUGE in 2011 and that was due to Glee. If they had toured then (not that I would have actually wanted that because Stevie's solo album rocked) it would have been a much bigger event. They were everywhere after that episode. Rumours was selling huge numbers again.

Not only the sales, but the younger generation was really into it.

Any of the younger generation who found out about them through Glee and would have been willing to shell out $$$ in 2011 to go see them is probably still interested enough to shell out $$$ to see them today. And I think there's even more buzz than there was in 2011. If they had gone out in 2011 it would have seem rushed and as if it was thrown together simply because there was a slight blip on the popularity radar.

Rumours is still selling in large amounts (which is even more impressive than in 2011, because there's not some pop culture phenomenon that's pushing it to the general public. PLUS the box sets that are selling are a lot more expensive than the $9 or so it would cost to buy the regular album).

Not to mention that Fleetwood Mac was the soundtrack to the most popular Superbowl commercial this year. That's pretty damn good publicity right there. We have the hype of there being at least a few new songs, as well, which we wouldn't have had in 2011.

Their UK tour sold out the day tickets went on sale, did it not? I don't think they're suffering from having waited until 2013 to tour. At all.

I never said they were suffering. If anything, the 2013 presale is already doing better than the 2009 tour.

What I meant was, I had never seen so much popularity for them than I did in 2011. Lots of my friends (20 year olds) and younger were totally into it and it felt like a great time for them to be in the spotlight.

I agree and disagree with this. Yes, Landslide has gained some recognition again due to the commercial. The younger mind that has everything on their mental plates such as school, boy/girlfriends/social friendships/sporting events/movies/media/texting/iphones/video games/getting their license/what they are doing next wkend/college plans/etc.

I think the young mind has a very short attention span and the last thing they are going to do is buy a FM concert ticket from an aging band they heard on Glee 2 years ago. Hell Stevie and Mick could be their grandparents and if they don't go to see them reguraly, what makes us think they will pay to see some other 60 yo's? :shrug:

Those Glee-watching kids don't work anyway and if they're asking their parents to give them that much money to see someone in concert, it probably wouldn't be FM. Although, they might hope parts of Rumours will be performed on the Glee touring show!

I think you misunderstood my point (or perhaps I didn't articulate it well).

What I'm saying is - I don't think any of them were likely to have bought tickets ANYWAY. I was a huge Glee fan for a while before completely went down the tubes, and most of the fans I encountered are simply fans of the actors/characters, as would be expected. They'll go pay to see the Glee cast members sing Rumours songs, maybe even buy the album because it was on Glee... but would probably have no interest in seeing Fleetwood Mac sing Rumours songs. Fleetwood Mac isn't what they're a fan of.

And if there were some Glee viewers who had enough of an interest in those songs to actually look into Fleetwood Mac and become a fan (to the extent that they would willing to spend a bunch of $$$ to see them) they are probably still going to be interested today.

Glee certainly introduced a younger generation to FM (a generation which, I should mention, I am a part of), or at least reminded people about them, but the next episode there's another cool song none of them have heard before that they're obsessing over. And they obsess over it not because of the music but because of how it fits in the storyline. I don't think if they toured 3 months after the Glee episode that there would have been any difference in the turnout. I don't think there was a sudden influx of otherwise uninterested 13 year olds at Madonna's concerts just because Glee did an episode about her.

Of course, we'll never know, because it didn't happen. Glee got them exposure but it wasn't like they were all the sudden on the cover of every magazine or something. Their catalogue just got a bump.
