Favorite Opening Track

And here's another poll.. What was the best election for an opening track in an album? So the question is not exactly your favorite song within this list, but what do you think was the best choice the band made for the first track in an album.

cantgoback 01-15-2013 02:10 PM

Either Love in Store from Mirage (which also happens to be my favorite song from the album) or Second Hand News from Rumours.

Villavic 01-15-2013 02:21 PM

By the way, does anybody know if there's a reason why a Stevie song was never the first track in a Fleetwood Mac album?

Miraculously Paper Doll opened the Box Set (and ironically it's not the best example), but that's the only exception cause all studio, GH and live albums does not open with Stevie.

FierySequences 01-15-2013 02:58 PM

This is tough b/c they are all good, tie b/w Tusk and Mirage.

Over and Over wins slightly (my post in another thread is fitting here):
Love the slow push, classic Mac bass that leads the erie, mysterious album and band in a whole new direction. The vocals and harmonies on this one really shine through and showcase the members at their best. Each member has an equal contribution to this song....almost like The Chain (unhinged) but Chris reels them all back in with her tender heartfelt lyrics and grounds them into making a fantastic journey of an album they named Tusk.

Oddly enough, I think Over & Over is my favorite opening track. I used to think it was a very poor & downright bizarre choice since the song is so quiet & slow. But it's such a beautiful, dreamy song and it sets you up for the journey which you're about to embark upon. The way the song slowly winds up towards a crescendo builds your attention for what's to follow. Over & Over is a very atypical choice of an opener for a very atypical album, and that's why it just plain works.

It's a very good choice for the Tusk first song, cause it's the perfect message to tell us Hey, this is not Rumours II at all!

Big Love wins it for me, I'm totally in love with the song lately.

WildHearted 01-15-2013 06:58 PM

I had to go with Monday Morning.

It is also a very good way to start the album, like saying Hey! This is the 80s!

I like it opening the live album too... It puts me in such a great mood..

mylittledemon 01-15-2013 09:22 PM

"Monday Mornin" you sure look fine!

On Ice 01-15-2013 09:28 PM

Over and Over gets my vote for the way it brings you into the experience of the album and it's just so beautifully performed, arguably my favourite FM song.

It's the perfect opening for shows. I like it far more than The Chain, except in The Dance and the 1997 Reunion tour, when this song got a special meaning and fitted perfectly for the moment.

Always been attracted to this track. I think it is the perfect opener. It's soo mature.

Man, this is really hard!!
I really like all the opening tracks, even from Live and The Dance!
Mmm I think I can't vote for only one...

johnnystorms 01-16-2013 03:45 AM

Damn!

i'm the only vote fir WtWCT. i think it's aGREAT opening song... sounds classic FM to me.. love the harmony.. my second choice was SHN, tho.

ryan4136 01-16-2013 08:07 AM

So I picked Over and Over assuming I might be the only vote......what a shock to see so many others love it too.

(of course this is the home of Tusk fans)

The only thing I didn't like about the Chain was Christine's harmony was a little hot (loud in the mix) sometimes affecting the blend. And Lindsey's "blah blah blah" screams at the end were a bit weird. His guitar was amazing on the Dance tho..

ditto... with Monday Morning a very close second.. and SHNews a close third..

MacShadowsBall 01-22-2013 06:11 PM

I went with Monday Morning, Second Hand News being second. You need a nice, uptempo song to get a record going.

I'm not sure Sleeping Around the Corner was the best choice for the opening track. Not a bad song, but I'd have chosen Red Sun or On With the Show.

sue 10-19-2025 12:31 PM

Went for wtWct..although almost went with Over&Over..
Couldn’t leave Johnnystorms by himself…

David 10-27-2025 02:52 PM

I’ve always loved WTWCT. It reminds me of Zevon.

Let’s not forget “Heroes Are Hard to Find” in 1974 — a shining vocal by Christine and one of her best songs.

A-men on both counts.
WTWCT does not get much love around here. Its a great opening track. I love Over and Over but its a bit somber for an opening track IMHO.

My vote goes to Love In Store or Second Hand News. Something with a step or two.

HomerMcvie 10-27-2025 04:11 PM

I too LOVE WTWCT. I'll never understand why people hate it.
