Mika cites Fleetwood Mac as inspiration for sound of new album

I think he means Mirage/Tango-era Mac. Title track--"The Origin of Love"--sounds like a combo of the Mac and Erasure. That's a good thing. Although a coming out song, I think it also joins the discourse about gay marriage:

Mika...I can't decide how I feel about his work. For every song of his that I like, he has another I detest.

No surprise that I love it all. I think he's got it--a rhythmic genius.

Jondalar 08-22-2012 04:51 PM

huh? is he supposed to be a household name

TrueFaith77 08-22-2012 05:39 PM

Grace Kelly was a huge hit. And Love Today. Always being used in commercials and movie trailers. His second album, however, was not a big hit in the US (though it was internationally).

Macfanforever 08-22-2012 07:34 PM

Who's Mika.

TrueFaith77 08-22-2012 08:05 PM

I think y'all r just saying that to get my goat.

WildHearted 08-22-2012 09:20 PM

If it weren't for me being on this one pop culture blog, I wouldn't have a clue who Mika is either. And I'm young so it's not a generational thing.

TrueFaith77 08-22-2012 10:47 PM

....anyway, does it sound like Fleetwood Mac or not?

...and for those who knew who Mika was, I'm glad he came out! I hated the way the hipster music critics judged him for not coming out, but I think he made it the right political and artistic statement at this time. Of course, now he will just be made fun of by the same hipster critics because he didn't need to come out cuz everyone knew he was gay. Coming out is a political stand. It's not about surprising people.

Honestly, I'd just assumed he was out already. Good for him, though!

The new music isn't really working for me, though it might gel eventually. I guess I can sort of, almost, kind of see some similarites to the Mac's more technophilic songs. Really, Fleetwood Mac's discography is so diverse that practically any contemporary artist could claim lineage and I'd just say, "Eh, sure, I guess."

"Elle me dit" was SUCH A HIT in France, last year, that it became annoying. I like the song though, but i didn't see the FM connection. Still nice to hear, i'm feeling that our band is finally getting all the recognition it deserves, from this new generation of pop artists. (the tribute album, Florence, Mika, Fleet Foxes, etc.)

FANNY ARDANT!!!!!! I hope all of France swooned. I know I--an American--did. She must be regarded a national treasure. :o i love her

Macfanforever 08-23-2012 08:09 PM

His tunes have the 1980's sound to them.Which the 1980's music I enjoyed.

bluefox4000 08-24-2012 02:14 PM

I loved since Mika Since his debut....Great pop Songwriter. Not to impressed with these songs though. Could not finish any of them. I'll still check the album out though...

Mick

I have decided that TOOL is the greatest song I've heard all year (yes! greater even than "Sing the Delta" (Iris Dement), "Breathing Space" (Pet Shop Boys) and "Answer Song" (Saint Etienne)).

Lola = "Fleetwood Mac with a little bit of 'Billie Jean'"

And "Celebrate" sounds exactly like "Everywhere" to me.

And, of course, Lola is one of the iconic figures of modern art.

TrueFaith77 09-07-2012 06:50 PM

Mika describes what he's saying on the title track: "I want to tell you I love you like the Bee Gees, I want to tell you I love you like Fleetwood Mac, I want to tell you I love you like church music. Like: do you understand?" Wow! He GETS it!!

I love love love Mika, and cannot wait for this new album.

And speaking of him and Fleetwood Mac/Everywhere, check out this little gem a found a few months ago. It's in French, but just skip to :35.

TrueFaith77 09-11-2012 06:29 PM

^^Amazing to be validated! And also amazing to hear!

I definitely hear "Everywhere" in "Lola"...particularly the piano track, and the "oooooh-aaaaah" parts. Very reminiscent of Christine's "Oh Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii" from the chorus of "Everywhere."

TrueFaith77 09-11-2012 07:26 PM

I hear "Everywhere" everywhere in these tracks. Very excited. :blob2:
