Joe Walsh on Howard Stern this morning (06-04-12)

Did anyone catch the full interview?

Heard parts on the way to work this morning. Howard tried to get Joe to talk more about his relationship with Stevie Nicks at least twice during the interview.

If I remember correctly, Howard was pretty amazed that they were a couple and seemed to think really highly of Stevie and how she said that he was the love of her life. Howard also mentioned something to the effect the she is/was one of the greatest songwriters. When he asked Joe about it, there was nothing but silence.

Howard asked Joe about the relationship a few minutes later mentioning again how Stevie considered Joe the love of her life. I got the feeling that Joe didn't want to say to much about their relationship because he is married now. Joe did mention that Stevie "helped" him with the Confessor album. He did mention a specific song, but I missed the title. He also mentioned that she wrote a song about him, and after about 10 seconds got close to the actual song title which of course was Has Anyone Written Anything For You.

loubird98 06-04-2012 08:38 PM

Mu husband mentioned to me that he was on and talking about Stevie but he couldn't tell me anything specific..he said it was just chit-chat. I am going to see if they re-play it on sirrius. I want to hear it.

HejiraNYC 06-04-2012 10:02 PM

Joe Walsh is an insufferable turd blossom. I wouldn't p*** on him if he was on fire.

Nickingham 06-04-2012 10:26 PM

Found it! Go here.

19:40 - 21:39
41:41 - 42:18
47:21 - 50:29

Macfanforever 06-04-2012 10:49 PM

They start talking about Stevie around 19:40.

bombaysaffires 06-05-2012 12:16 AM

he pretty much says it was a road relationship. it happened and it worked for the summer they were together (he says it was just the summer) because they were touring together, and they were both lonely, and they spent all that time together on the road. Once they got off the road, they went their separate ways.

When Howard calls her a great songwriter, Joe totally blanches and won't agree.

He also totally avoids answering the question "Did you love her?" although Howard tries to get him to answer it several times.

When asked if Stevie was one of the people he had to make amends to (12 Steps) he said yes.

Sanne2 06-05-2012 03:53 AM

Didn't it last much longer according to Stevie, like 2 years?

Even on her worst day, she's ten times the songwriter he is. I know you can't choose who you fall for, but I hope with every fibre of my being that she is totally over that excuse for a man.

jellyman10 06-05-2012 05:04 AM

Something else that really shocks me about Walsh is why he is so loath to deny Stevie any dignity or status at all? It's not as if she went around pointing out that she dumped him, the way she did with Lindsey after they split. The things Stevie has said about Walsh would make most men just nod and smile and say something non-comittal that left the subject in the realm of 'it wasn't to be' or 'life's like that'. But he seems to have a real nasty streak about her that makes me think there's either something important that we don't know - or he's just a really, really nasty piece of work. Even now. Sober.

Ugh, he's making me feel nauseous. Enough!

I think the key is when he says they were monogamous for that one summer. I took that to mean they were still 'involved' for longer than that. I think many of Stevie's relationships had that feature of not ending cleanly, but rather petering out in a stuttering way over months or even years.

Really must stop posting in this thread, but it's pushed my buttons!

gypsy4life 06-05-2012 07:20 AM

He is a douche and was never good enough for her....end of story...

loubird98 06-05-2012 07:26 AM

I'd like to think that he feels bad about the years of trashing her, so maybe he now just keeps his mouth shut or says nothing at all. But, I could be wrong.

Macfanforever 06-05-2012 07:52 AM

He doesn't sound to healthy.

Their situation reminds me of James Taylor and Carly Simon, who divorced presumably due to James' out-of-control drug problems. Carly today is mostly open to talking about their marriage and she has even expressed a willingness to maintain some kind of a relationship with him; after all, he is the father of her children. By sharp contrast, James wants nothing to do with her whatsoever. He has pretty much refused to communicate with Carly, let alone speak about Carly in interviews or acknowledge that they were ever even together. When Carly was on the Howard Stern show a few years ago, she mentioned that when her daughter Sally got married at James' house, she wasn't even allowed to go inside; Carly had to use the port-a-potty. Howard quipped that she should have taken a big **** right on the front lawn. Oh, how I love Howard and Carly...

The common theme here seems to be drugs. My *theory* is that, in the process of recovery, addicts take inventory of the people in their lives and determine who to keep and who to toss out. In the trash heap, theoretically, would be the enablers, the hangers-on, the triggers, etc. who can be perilous to one's recovery. In addition, there are those who have witnessed the addict's rock bottom, which can be a very, very dark place. Perhaps Joe has some kind of lingering resentment for Stevie because she was an enabler or she just couldn't/wouldn't save him from himself; after all, Stevie herself pretty much said that their addictions were spiraling out of control together. And who knows what Stevie witnessed when Joe was scraping along the bottom; perhaps he is so mortified by his own behavior that he has effectively blocked that period of time out of his mind. I suspect something similar must be going down with James Taylor...

loubird98 06-05-2012 08:30 AM

Thanks for posting this. I am listening now. He's not perfect by any means, but at one point, he does say, "Stevie is special." That was kind of nice. But he definiely does deflect on other questions about her.

Wow, I never even thought of that. But it makes a lot of sense, especially if it's possible that Stevie's recovery is/was fundamentally more robust than his? Because that would give Walsh a motive to want to ensure she didn't threaten to become part of his life again. I mean, if I think about what I'm like when I see people I played in bands with in my twenties, but whom I don't see regularly - mostly what we talk about are our 'war stories' of partying. So I can see how that could be a very serious reason to not want contact or even to give headspace to someone you associate with a time like that.

I still think it's vindictive, though, to not even say something blandly complimentary about her songwriting. He would know that that's hitting her where she lives.

One thing I noticed on re-reading is that he called her 'a soulmate'. Just gets curiouser.

Thanks, Hejira.

I think this is it in a nutshell. Stevie saw Joe at one of the lowest points of his life and he doesn't really want to walk down that memory lane. I guess I understand that. And his silence when faced with the question about how he perceives Stevie as an artist shouldn't necessarily be taken as a diss. He probably just doesn't want to talk about that time in his life or the people associated with it. I guess he's entitled to that, however, maybe he should have thought twice about going on Howard Stern. Of COURSE Howard is going to probe and ask uncomfortable questions, hello!

What's weird is the Carly Simon/James Taylor story. I can understand him not wanting to see or associate with those who were part of his druggy past, but to forbid Carly entrance into his house at their daughter's wedding? That is really low! Sounds to me like something more than shame is operating here. Sounds like he's still very angry with her for some reason.

thanks for posting that... enjoying listening to it. now i really wish Lindsey went on Howard when he was scheduled last year. it's nice to hear something different, not your regular run-of-the-mill interview.

skuncles 06-05-2012 09:17 AM

Here are just the parts where he talks about Stevie.

http://www.mediafire.com/?d1c4kzvbsyiu92h

WildHearted 06-05-2012 11:41 AM

It seemed like he just really didn't want to talk about it, and had to force himself to say anything nice at all....

Well my opinion of him certainly hasn't changed.

BrownEyedGirl26 06-05-2012 12:02 PM

Maybe he really loved her!

Maybe when he needed her the most her people kept him away "for her own good"!
"Something you just don't touch because it hurts too much" If there is a psychiatrist on the Ledge, can you give us your opinion? Wasn't "Talk To Me" written for him? When she sang this originally, it was with such emotion like she was trying to reach out to help him but maybe she didn't know he was trying to contact her at the same time! This may or may not be the case here! It could certainly explain any resentment issues!

loubird98 06-05-2012 12:19 PM

That could have been the case. He said on the interview that when the tour was over that they "couldn't" be together anymore...something like that. And he did describe her as a "soulmate." Maybe I'm reading into this too much, lol. But it is nice to hear him talk about her sober.

La Nicks did not write a word or note of "Talk to Me".It was written for her by comission by Chas Sanford after she expressed admiration for his "Missing You' as performed by John Waite. It is doubtful Chas was privy to any of the Walsh drama.

I love it when fans take the time to make it easier for me to hear the important parts.
Especially considering I fell asleep twice last night trying to listen to this interview.

I didn't fault Joe for hesitating to agree with Howard's description of Stevie as one of the greatest songwriters ever. I am quite sure Stevie herself would not put herself in the same category of Lennon/McCartney, Paul Simon, Dylan etc...

Eh! Surely it a subjective question to begin with. Perhaps if Howard had narrowed his question outside any realm of the exclusive "boys club" and stated that Stevie is among the greatest female songwriters ever.

I wouldn't be too certain of that .We are talking about Stevie"you wouldn't say that to Bob Dylan" Nicks here.

hmm - are you saying female songwriters can be great just when not judged against men? :(

Walsh intentionally made it VERY wide - much wider than Howard's original question was - saying that when one thinks of great composers of the 30s...

michelej1 06-05-2012 04:49 PM

Well, I don't know who else he is dated, but maybe even though he manipulated Stevie quite a bit, the way she tells it, maybe she was still the strongest person he's ever been with.

She didn't exactly dump him, but stood up to him, at least from that story she tells about when he was hanging around distracting her bandmates and being a jerk and she finally put her foot down.

Maybe he doesn't like publicly remembering their time together because she made him feel weak, small, less than in control. She didn't feel like she was the dominant one in that relationship, but maybe he did.

No. I didn't say that at all! I implied that male musicians most always dominate any "best of" musician, songwriter lists overall in general. And therefore it's so characteristic for FM77 to list the obvious "Lennon/McCartney, Paul Simon, Dylan etc..." as being in that immediate realm of greatest songwriters ever, without even mentioning a Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith etc., etc. It's just an observation.

mikephxaz 06-05-2012 06:18 PM

I thought mr walsh was quite introspective (as much as he can be)...no relationship that was based in such drug abuse can end well...the fact they both can still call themselves "soul mates" is nice...
Life on the road with all of its excesses doesnt breed stability...I'm impressed that Stevie has good relationships with ALL these men :blob1:

bombaysaffires 06-05-2012 07:41 PM

My sense of their relationship has always been that she was in it much deeper (emotionally) than he was, and couldn't let it go so easily like he could. Maybe the drugs clouded her judgement of him and his attachment to her....but it really has always sounded to me like she for whatever reason just couldn't let go of him and perhaps he took advantage of that and strung her along beyond that summer of monogamy... and rather than realize "he's just not that into you" (because of drugs or her own emotional issues or whatever) she kept hanging on. I mean, his behavior could not have been more clear.... that night he went to the studio and disrupted her recording session bull****ting and goofing around with all the guy musicians and then her asking him "am I going home with you or..?" and he drops the bombshell "oh I forgot to tell you I'm leaving for Australia tomorrow". I always feel bad for her when I hear that story, like I want to say "Don't you get it?? Let him go, he's not worth it!!"

sleepless child 06-05-2012 08:10 PM

I feel too like she was more in love than he was with her. I'm sure he loved the idea of being with Stevie, but he never took the relationship very seriously. She has said such deep, emotional things about him and even to this day he acts like it was some casual celebrity hook up. The crazy drug days has alot to do with it but for God's sake, he can't even remember the name of the song she wrote for him. He should feel honored that she wrote such a beautiful song about him and the loss of his daughter. He just comes across as a jerk to me.

Yes, that's right, I had forgotten about that! I remember seeing the video clip of this song and her performance and was shocked when I bought the "Rock A Little" album and read that she didn't write it!

SummerlongBoots 06-06-2012 09:51 AM

I came from a family brimming with addicts. I'm no expert and this is just based on my own history but most addicts I've known ended up full of self-loathing.

Some transferred that self "disgust" on to others, similar to what abusers do, because they couldn't stand the fact that someone loved them. ( Because whatever the reasons, they had declared themselves unloveable.)

But, when the pain - the void - the demon of whatever it was they were battling came back, as it always did, they were left with the option of loving themselves enough to do the hard work of recovery, or picking up a bottle or a needle to deaden the pain quickly.

It might be possible that Joe Walsh really cared for Stevie but "hated" her for loving him. That might've put pressure on him to love himself and he wasn't up for the challenge so he turned on her. Just a thought.

I'm not saying it was a casual hook-up or anything, but we all know how dramatic Stevie can be. Everything is as serious as a heart attack to her. There's not a whole lot of middle ground. I bet looking back on this relationship now she thinks, my god! I can't believe I said that he was one of my greatest loves! Cocaine is a helluva drug!
