Donna Summer passed away today

Sad News, Disco Queen of the 70s Donna Summer died at age 63 (64?) of breast cancer.

I loved her 70s and 80s work with Giorgio Moroder.

Very sad.....

Chris_Lover 05-17-2012 11:41 AM

I still can't believe it. It's a really sad news.
RIP Donna, may God bless your soul.

^^ This thread will obviously be moved to the Chit Chat area.

I hate when the idols of my youth are slowly slipping away... although I certainly was not expecting this one. Oy! I have *zero* knowledge about her health, but I am especially shocked that she died from breast cancer- a disease that has a markedly better prognosis today than it did in the past. Oh, this is so sad... :distress: The first record I ever bought was the 45-single of Donna Summer's "MacArthur Park" b/w "Once Upon a Time (Live)." I bought it at the Korvettes in Herald Square. I played the sh** out of that thing.

RIP Donna Summer

They are saying it was lung cancer from breathing in particles from 9/11.

There are no albums I love more than Bad Girls and Once Upon a Time.

There is no song I love more than "I Feel Love."

RIP Donna Summer

I heard this on the radio this afternoon and was really shocked and saddened. I wasn't even aware that she was ill.

We are losing all of these great artists lately. It's sad No one can to replace them.

fringed n fab 05-17-2012 12:23 PM

Shocking and sad. I had no idea either she was living right here in the quiet little beach town of Englewood, Florida that's just below Sarasota. I go there all the time.

This is so unfair! Every pain is unfair, specially for a disease that, as Hejira said, today can be defeated better than in the past, but reading that she was another victim of the 9/11 tragedy is something that breaks the heart

KarmaContestant 05-17-2012 12:55 PM

Rest in peace, Donna.

RIP Donna Summer

I was shocked when a co-worker told me @ lunchtime that she passed. :sorry: I didn't know that she was sick & apparently she was a private person & this is why. I just know that it was cancer & either breast or lung cancer. Either one is just terrible. I have her last CD, Crayons, first one I ever bought & I really liked it. We had parakeet back in the disco area that when my mom played "Bad Girls", just loved the "Toot toot, beep, beep" & went crazy singing along. That brings back good memories.

RIP Donna :(

Lee :(

That's simply ludicrous. Was she, like, digging through the rubble along with the other rescue workers? It is virtually impossible to pinpoint the exact trigger for cancer- only risk factors. And if she wasn't down there inhaling the dust for weeks while the towers were smoldering, it wasn't the cause.

Some blogs are now reporting that she believed she developed lung cancer due to inhaling 9/11 dust. Now that makes a lot more sense. Because, you know, she was an oncologist as well as an internationally popular singer!

Villavic 05-17-2012 01:36 PM

In shock

I was alone at lunch and while waiting for the disk I was checking news at my smartphone and saw a headline "Donna Summ..." so I guessed it was about a new tour or song and then the sad new. I was really in shock. I am.

Donna Summer was my first icon. The first album I bought at 11yo (Live & More), she was my idol before I discovered Queen, Fleetwood Mac and Pink Floyd. I fortunately could see her in 2005 in LA (Anaheim actually, I guess). Unforgettable.

I'll listen her music the whole day. McArthur Park is one of my favorites and probably she is singing it in heaven..

There will be another song for me For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
You'll still be the one.

Yes, it stands as heartbreaking reminder of the impact that day has had on our consciousness (which is the truth I take from Donna's poignant self-diagnosis). (Illume says the candle that I burn. . .)

I echo those who said that we are truly losing our greats with no replacements in view.

Her accomplishments as a recording artist are truly worthy of the upper echelon of pop music's pantheon. Seriously, only Once Upon a Time and Bad Girls could look Rumours and Tusk in the eye in their respective years (ok ok Bollocks and Fear of Music, too, but you get my point--and she did it twice!).

I agree completely. Utter nonsense. If it were remotely true, ****, everyone in NYC would be on their death beds (including Stevie Nicks who was also there on 9/11).

diane_k 05-17-2012 04:10 PM

^^ I was waiting for someone to make that connection. People can be so damn silly sometimes. :distress:

Oh this news makes me so sad! My diva loving heart is heavy today. Donna Summer had one of the most beautiful voices, and it stayed with her for her entire career. I can't think of any vocal powerhouse that could still sing with fire like she did, for the length of her career. I hope her album in progress had a few finished tracks...it would be nice to hear.

Also, **** cancer!

fringed n fab 05-17-2012 04:22 PM

Just watched Fox 13 Tampa Bay news on tv, they said she lived in a beachfront house on Manasota Key in Englewood FL and not many even knew about it including her neighbors around. A lot of the homes along the beach there are either gated or so heavily tropical foliaged you can't even see the houses but I'm guessing she kept a low profile around town cause not many even knew she was here. The news said she actually died down in Naples, FL which is below Fort Myers but didn't say why. I tried to find some video of the 5 o'clock news but couldn't see any posted yet. So sad.

Found this article snippet just now online

Public records show she moved to Manasota Key, an exclusive island near Sarasota, in 2007. She lived in her $3.7 million beachfront mansion overlooking the Gulf of Mexico with her husband, Bruce Sudano, a singer and songwriter and music producer.

I saw Donna Summer in concert here at the Hard Rock in Hollywood (South Florida) about 2 years ago. She told the audience that she lived on the beach "near Sarasota" and that she loved Florida. She also chit-chatted about recently becoming a grandmother. I am very sad about her passing, I wasn't even aware that she was battling cancer. I was a big fan of hers in the 70's and used to have all of her album covers up on my bedroom wall (before I found Stevie-I also went through a Linda Ronstadt and a Pat Benatar phase pre-Stevie). I am still a big fan of Donna's and I just listened to her "Once Upon A Time" album from start to finish last Sunday. Very sad. She has a gorgeous voice and her songs always bring me back to my youth.

I agree with both of you.I'm puzzled about that news.I wonder who came up with that story. We know Donna was not working with the NYFD and the NYPD that dreadful day. Also I was thinking about Stevie being in NYC that day too as after reading that news.I'm not a doctor But If she had breast cancer and it spread like wildfire into the lungs like my late sisters did back in 2007.

Another thing . I can't stand it when these news organizations jump the gun to report any news breaking story Without doing any homework researching for the right information to report. Its a ratings game.

I was shocked and saddened when I read about this on my MSN homepage tonight. She was only 63. I remember as a boy, I sounded like a little girl and I sang Love To Love You Baby over the phone to a teenage crush of mine, Tony Racco.

RIP Donna Summer

Some "journalists" would sell their soul to the Devil only to get money and fame writing lies about a person who can't defend herself anymore. That's disgusting. I really hope someone will stop this gossip, making sure she will get the respect she deserves.

@Hejira: I didn't know she was also an oncologist, but maybe this explain the fact she prefered not telling anyone about her cancer. When she knew there was no hope left for her, she decided to face her destiny alone. I guess it must have something to do with the ethical code for medical doctors, but also with the fact that she was a private person and didn't want to spectacularize her illness.

Here's some more videos.Tribute to the queen of disco. She will live on.........

From Fox 13 Tampa Bay I had watched today. I remember her appearing on Idol a few years back and thinking how she would've made an excellent judge on the show for people. I had no idea she was living right here in Florida. I'm in Englewood all the time.

BombaySapphire3 05-18-2012 12:29 AM

Donna was a great singer although I did not buy her music. It doesn't surprise me that she thought her cancer was brought on by 9/11 'dust".She had some odd notions about those kind of things. Those of us who are old enough can recall when she said that AIDS was God's judgement on homosexuals.Pretty odd statement coming from the undisputed queen of disco.at any rate God rest her soul.

Macfanforever 05-18-2012 01:38 AM

I remember a couple years ago when Donna was on tour. She had a date in Atlantic City at the same time as Stevie's concert was. I was bummed out.

GODDESS6 05-18-2012 05:24 AM

I think that allegation needs to be astericked since no actual recording exists of her saying this. I suspect she raised the dander of a lot of gay people when she publically became a born-again Christian. The backlash was inevitable. In any case, regardless of whether any of this is true, Donna threw herself into becoming a major supporter of the GLBT community towards the latter half of her career. Whether this was motivated by the fact that her popularity fell off of a cliff is debatable. But she was clearly horrified that these words were attributed to her and that people were deeply hurt.

Anyway, whether she said these words or not, all is forgiven now. She proved through her actions that she didn't mean any of those words (that may or may not have issued from her lips).

I agree with you. It still shocks me I've probably driven past and walked the beach in front of her house a hundred times and never even knew she lived there. I thought she was a very pretty woman too for her age in recent years. And rightfully diva-ish in appearance

"On the Radio" was the first album I ever bought with my own money - I was 9. I was so happy when she recorded "Enough is Enough" with my other fave, Barbra Streisand.

RIP Ms. Summer. You were loved.

Just posted at STevie's forum about it would be great to listen Rod (w' Stevie) singing Dim All The Lights, since this song was originally written, by Donna Summer, for him but she decided at the last minute to sing it instead of give it to Rod. This video shows Donna singing the way she imagines how Rod would sing it.

When I was posting at Stevie's forum I checked when Donna passed away and it's unbelievable it already has been more than 2 months. How fast!
