Have you ever performed Stevie in a karaoke bar?
Not Karaoke, but I cover her all the time at open mic night.
My friend Cat and I have attempted to perform "Leather And Lace" several times!
I did Leather and Lace with my friend at a high school talent show, Then backed her up on The Highway Man.

Yes, EO17, Stand Back, and Sara. All with great effort, I think you have to be Stevie to do them well.
I only sing at home. I feel it's not nice to annoy and torture strangers. ;p

They're all my favorites - that's why I play them. There's plenty of others that I've practiced like After The Glitter Fades, Gold Dust Woman, Gypsy, The Highwayman, Think About It, Rose Garden, Sorcerer, Candlebright, Long Distance Winner, It's Only Love, Stand Back, Wild Heart (dressing room version), Crystal, and If You Ever Did Believe... I either just haven't gotten around to playing them, or never figured out a do-able solo acoustic version of them that didn't leave a lot to be desired. :) |
Me & my beau did Leather & Lace.
A verrrrry drunken Edge Of Seventeen on a stag weekend last year. I really went for the edge wail!
Oh hells yes. I've done EO17, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around (with the hubby), Dreams, Rhiannon, Gold Dust Woman, Gypsy, Stand Back, Seven Wonders and Talk to Me. We have our own karaoke set up and have parties from time to time. So much fun!

I have not tried any Stevie songs. Her songs are not in my octave. In order to sing in the same key I would need to sing in a bass range that totally ruins the song and does no justice to the material. Can you imagine EO17 in a bass range? HORRID. People should sing in their own range and natural keys. The only pass on this is when you are super drunk, in another town, and don't care about making any bar patrons angry by making their ears bleed.
I have seen a few men try and pull off singing in Stevie's range/key. Most of them get a FAIL. They start out ok. Then when they need to use the upper register they drop down an octave and start from there. It just is sad to hear a man try and hit a woman's range even for a tenor without straining for the notes and not sounding like a BeeGee. Falsetto is not appealing unless you are Maroon 5 or Four Seasons. I know Stevie has a lower range, but since most her songs are very if not overtly feminine it just seems silly even for even a gay man to try and mean to expect anyone to have to witness and endure it. Guuurl... get off the stage! When a man tries to sing Landslide IN STEVIE'S KEY AND OCTAVE! OMG. NOOOOOO I DID hear one guy in Chicago sing EO17 and almost totally nail a coked up Rock a LIttle era Stevie imitation from start to finish. It was scary as hell how well he did it. He had to of been a fan of the Red Rocks video because that was what it sounded like in his phrasing and steve ad-libs. It had the nasal quality of that era, the pitch, everything. I was told he was a high tenor and sings in a gay choir in town and is well known for having a very high squeaky voice. It was actually better than any "real" woman's performance I have seen at bar of EO17. I was like.... Sadly I think he and I were the only Stevie fans in there because most the guys in that bar are only into Lady Gaga and Kylie Minoque and wouldn't know a good song if it came up and bit them on the @$$ |

In 1991 I sang Dreams in a bar in Phoenix and even though I knew every word in the song by heart, I was nervous. I actually had to look at the words on the monitor to remember them. |
More than once. Three Stevie fans and I teamed up on Stop Draggin' just last weekend in New Orleans.
