Your Favorite Stevie Mixtape?
I'm being really old school today made a Stevie Mix Tape for the car (It doesn't have a CD player). I'm pretty satisfied with it I'd say.
I used a 60 Minute tape. Side A finished just in time! Side B had about a minute left on it, so I filled it in with an instrumental from Final Fantasy (the inner nerd in me), but the song always reminded me of something Stevie-ish. SIDE A 1. In Your Dreams 2. Ooh My Love 3. Blue Lamp 4. After the Glitter Fades 5. Moonlight 6. Greta 7. Love Is SIDE B 1. Nightbird 2. Violet and Blue 3. Bella Donna 4. Love Is Like a River 5. Trouble in Shangri-La 6. Sleeping Angel Anybody else find an old Stevie cassette tape, or made one recently? If so, what's on it! |
I still have a cassette deck in my car too but I haven't listened to any tapes in awhile now but I do have Stevie/mac tapes to listen to if I wanted too (in my car/in my house) I don't have a cd player either in my car. I have made tape mixs before. It was never easy esp when songs were on cassette (what a pain before cds ) esp all those demos/outtakes etc. I know I'd made up a mix tape the time TISL came out that had demo's outtakes/extended versions etc on it. It was really a great tape. I do still have it but I don't recall exactly what I'd put on it though. I can try to locate it if you wanted me to? Just let me know. Cool to know I'm not the only one that still has a cassette player still. I still have an old sony walkman cassette player too. And a double cassette player along with my cd player in my room. Cool. Nothing wrong with old school. Not to me anyway.

Haha, don't worry starshine you don't have to dig for it if you don't want. Just thought I'd start up the topic cause I was curious to see what stevie songs others would put on a mix tape. I love to see other people pick their favorites and how they sequence them.

Great idea for a thread! I made my own Stevie 'greatest hits" CD last summer- I'll need to update it this summer, but this is what I had from last year's mix:
1. Silver Springs 2. Dreams 3. After the Glitter Fades (demo) 4. Gypsy (rock demo) 5. Edge of Seventeen 6. How Still My Love 7. Sara (cleaning lady) 8. Angel (Tusk rehearsal) 9.Gold Dust Woman (Rumours outtake) 10. Gold and Braid (HBO special) 11. Storms 12. Bella Donna 13. Rooms on Fire 14. Beautiful Child 15. Sisters of the Moon (Tusk rehearsal) 16. Rhiannon (Rosebud version) I'm really pleased with the running order here! |

So I admire that you were able to pull it off!! And yeah, I thought my sequencing turned out pretty good. Sequencing is one of my favourite parts of making mixes like this. I was gonna close it off with "For What It's Worth" after Sleeping Angel, but there wasn't enough room in the end. |

I made about 5 mixtapes on cassettes about 25 years ago and played the crap out of them.I have to look at the selection index.
|
I've never made a mix tape, but I did make a Spotify playlist to help introduce some friends to Stevie a while back. It's 48 tracks and 3 hours long, so I won't list everything here unless someone asks, but here's the link for anyone with Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/user/girlboy...6qaRgRVMzubhUM
The unfortunate thing about Spotify is the selection is limited to what the record companies put on there, so I couldn't include all the songs I wanted them to hear (no The Wild Heart, no '90s soundtrack cuts, no "At Last") -- but I still end up listening to it at work a lot when I just want to Stevie out. |
Heh. Playlists are the MixTapes of the 2012's I suppose. They are convenient, but not as challenging because there really isn't a limit to what you can put on them.
Except for how you're explaining Spotify. Sounds interesting though! I'll have to look into it |

I'm trying to make my friend a BEST OF STEVIE mix and I just keep failing. There's too many I want to put on it! |
I made a Stevie tape (aka CD) for someone a year ago. I still have the playlist in iTunes:
Planets of the Universe Stand Back Landslide (The Dance) Reconsider Me If You Ever Did Believe After The Glitter Fades Blue Denim (single mix) Silver Springs (The Dance) Sara Leather And Lace Stop Draggin My Heart Around Talk To Me Edge of Seventeen Gypsy Thrown Down (SYW) |

I just made one for my friend tonight. It actually turned into a 2 disc set. I left off a lot of mainstream Stevie because he knows alot of the hits. And I've made him a tonne of Fleetwood Mac CDs before. So this was all solo. It was still hard though. There's 34 songs altogether when there originally was 50. Here's how it turned out: LEATHER & LACE: THE ESSENTIAL STEVIE NICKS Disc 1: "Through the Looking Glass" 1. Wild Heart 2. Greta 3. Long Way to Go 4. In Your Dreams 5. Leather & Lace 6. Nothing Ever Changes 7. Blue Lamp 8. It's Only Love 9. Bella Donna 10. Violet & Blue 11. Love Is Like a River 12. Sleeping Angel 13. Planets of the Universe 14. Moonlight 15. One More Big Time Rock & Roll Star 16. Alice 17. Doing The Best I Can Disc 2: "A Dream Begun In Wine" 1. Twisted (demo version) 2. No Spoken Word 3. Enchanted 4. Candlebright 5. The Nightmare 6. Ghosts Are Gone 7. Nightbird 8. If You Ever Did Believe 9. Two Kinds of Love 10. Juliet 11. For What It's Worth 12. Blue Denim 13. Battle of the Dragon 14. Trouble In Shangri-la 15. The Highwayman 16. I Still Miss Someone 17. Not Fade Away I really like the flow of it. I added "Not Fade Away" last minute - I was trying to make this as Stevie-written as possible, (with a couple exceptions of course), but I had to put it on! I love it. So it replaced "Rose Garden", which was a hard pick, cause that's definitely a favorite of mine. |

As ever, I could add a few to your list etc but that would end up just being mymix - which is to follow! I'vemade so many over the years. |
I used to make Stevie mix tapes all the time, I have dozens of them lying around. But one of my favorite ones I made was called "The Rock & Roll Life Of Stevie Nicks" (made in July 0f 1999), the idea of it being her life as told thru her lyrics. Due to space limitations it only goes up thru the death of Robin. I planned on doing a part two, but never got around to it. Here's what is on it:
My Grandfather (radio excerpt) I've Loved And I've Lost (radio excerpt) Garbo (demo) After The Glitter Fades Kind Of Woman Gold & Braid The Dealer (demo) Landslide Leather & Lace Silver Springs (demo) Dreams (radio interview version) Outside The Rain How Still My Love If You Ever Did Believe Storms Beauty & The Beast (bluesy demo) Sara (cleaning lady version) The Tower (demo) Sisters Of The Moon (demo) Bella Donna Edge Of Seventeen Gypsy Nightbird City Of Hope (demo) God's Garden (demo) I Sing For The Things I always planned on "I Sing For The Things" to end it. Maybe I should do a CD/MP3 version of this and fully update it!! |
Yes the same here .The last one that I made up was in the late 1980's around her 1989 tour was going on. At the same time. I remember very clear because one of my co-workers accidently dropped my boom box cassette recorder at work and ruined it by the record button got jammed on record. when it hit the floor. So the beginning got trashed.I had to re-record the segment over again to fix the tape.I almost killed her .but it was not worth losing my job over it.I repaired the boom box anyway..Most of my mixtapes were mixed with FM tunes too.Plus the two tv concerts sound tracks.I did some mp3 mixes over the years with the tunes similar what you guys listed already
|
My mix is probably terribly cliched, but here it is. . :-
Side 1 : Over The Stones
Side 2 : Down To The Sea

@skuncles that's a really interesting idea for a Mix! I love how you're making it tell a story, and how you have the radio excerpts to make it more authentic. @Silver Springs - cliche'd stuff is sometimes the best! Especially for us dedicated fans. Sometimes we get so lost in the obscure it's fun to go back to basics like that. Mmmm. I wanna make playlists of all your guyses stuff |
This is a fun thread. I love seeing everyone's favorite songs grouped together. Especially how some of you name the mixes. Mine were often very uncleverly named Nicks Mix. One I named I Can't Wait which I made for the drive down to one of her concerts, I think it was OSOTM tour.
I haven't made mixed tapes in years. Probably since Street Angel era. I would not even know where to begin to try and make one now, with all her decades of songs. Do you find her newer stuff (TISL - IYD, including SYW) mixes and flows well with her older stuff? |
I used to make them whenever a new album came out. I made one called "Enchanted ~ The Best of Stevie Nicks" about two years BEFORE the boxed set of the same name came out. Made one called "From Bella Donna to Street Angel" that was simply that, tracks from all the solo albums in that period. The "hook" of the tape was that it included the title tracks from all of the solo albums from BD to SA.
I just found one of the last mix CD's I made, I called it "Touched By An Angel" and it's a collection of Stevie's songs that mention angels somewhere in the lyric. I was going to do one called "Running In The Shadows" that would be all of her songs that mention shadows somewhere, but never got around to it. Here's the "Touched" track list: Touched By An Angel Sleeping Angel Blue Lamp ("go find some Christmas angel") Whole Lotta Trouble ("and the angel said, you must have had some kind of dream") Street Angel Ooh My Love ("there was a time you used to call her angel") Angel The Second Time ("do you remember how the angels sang") God's Garden ("sometimes I hear angels sing") Jane ("there are angels here on earth") Inspiration (doesn't mention angels, but fits the theme) Desert Angel |
