Rest In Peace, Davy Jones.
"The lead singer of The Monkees, Davy Jones, has died.
His rep tells TMZ that he died after suffering a heart attack this morning in Florida. Jones was 66. TMZ confirmed Jones' death with an official from the medical examiner's office for Martin County, Fla. Jones is survived by his wife Jessica and four daughters from previous marriages. Jones joined The Monkees in 1965, with Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork." - USA Today I grew up watching The Monkees on television and listening to their music. A part of my childhood has died. Rest in peace, Davy. |
Wow, so sad.
It's funny that CNN has NOTHING about his death, yet it's ALL OVER Facebook. Breaking news? Go to Facebook. |
Well Facebook is the hub of all news, as it seems. I'm forever finding out the news on there before I get anything on standard news websites.

Davy Jones, Manchester-born lead singer with 60s band The Monkees, has died aged 66, his publicist has confirmed. He died in his sleep at his home in Florida. His publicist, Deborah Robicheau, said he had a massive heart attack. The band, who included musicians Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, were famous for hits including Daydream Believer and I'm a Believer. The Monkees were an American pop band, assembled in 1966. Early on in his showbusiness career Jones appeared as Ena Sharples's grandson in ITV soap Coronation Street. The band found fame through a successful television series, popular in both the US and the UK. They were famous for their clean-cut image and were marketed as the American answer to The Beatles, notching up nine top 40 hits. Three of the band's original members - Jones, Dolenz and Tork - reunited together last year to play a series of gigs. A spokeswoman for the Medical Examiner's Office for Martin County, Florida, said: "The District 19 Medical Examiner's Office has been informed of the death of Mr Davy Jones. "The Medical Examiner's Office will take jurisdiction and a possible autopsy will be performed and evaluation of the circumstances of death and medical information." |
Oh my god.How sad.He died in his sleep?Wow.RIP Davy.
|
It just occurred to me. Tork and Dolenz now have no career.
I don't mean for that to sound mean. |
How very sad:( I quite like the Monkees, and this was a shock. RIP, Davy.

A quote from Michael Nesmith: "All the lovely people. Where do they all come from? So many lovely and heartfelt messages of condolence and sympathy, I don’t know what to say, except my sincere thank you to all. I share and appreciate your feelings. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. While it is jarring, and sometimes seems unjust, or strange, this transition we call dying and death is a constant in the mortal experience that we know almost nothing about. I am of the mind that it is a transition and I carry with me a certainty of the continuity of existence. While I don’t exactly know what happens in these times, there is an ongoing sense of life that reaches in my mind out far beyond the near horizons of mortality and into the reaches of infinity. That David has stepped beyond my view causes me the sadness that it does many of you. I will miss him, but I won’t abandon him to mortality. I will think of him as existing within the animating life that insures existence. I will think of him and his family with that gentle regard in spite of all the contrary appearances on the mortal plane. David’s spirit and soul live well in my heart, among all the lovely people, who remember with me the good times, and the healing times, that were created for so many, including us. I have fond memories. I wish him safe travels."
Beautiful words. |
Another sad news. Don't you all think that too many talented people have gone recently? Etta James, Whitney and now Davy Jones...

I have quite a few musician friends, who have been sharing their Davy Jones stories.
And no one has had a bad word to say. All of the stories have been about how kind and funny he was. One of my favorites was - a bass playing friend of mine...his band was opening for The Monkees. After a nice long conversation in the green room, Davy said, "kid, are you sure you want a hit? You'll still be singing it when you're 55!" He then winked as he left the room, and they took the stage for Daydream Believer. Class act. Rest in peace, David. |
I met Davy loads when I was a kid - his family lived next door to my friend! :)
I love The Monkees! |
Every generation has its own share of teenage Pop stars. The thing is that the contemporary teenage "artists" are totally talentless. I remember, when I was much younger I used to criticize a lot Debbie Gibson and Tiffany but now I can see that in some ways they were more talented than today's youngsters. If I remember correctly Gibson was writing and producing her own songs...Is Selena Gomez able to do that? Is Justin Bieber able to interest anyone apart from his "cutting-edge" hair cut:) ?

That's what I wrote: every generation has its teen idols. But contemporary teenage Pop stars are manufactured to the point when I just can't stand to listen to them. There's little to none creativity included and this is something that prevents me from enjoying their music. I was trying to pinpoint that most of today's teenage stars don't write their own songs which means they are at the mercy of executives who find them generally manufactured, superficially sounding music. I don't judge people who listen to them because to be honest I listen to a lot of music of which you could easily say it's cheesy and simply sucks. But as listeners we are all entitled to have our opinions. You listen and you judge. It's natural.

I wasn't a big fan of the Monkees but I knew of them. I saw them probably in the first re-runs at the time (grew up in the 70's) but its sad that this time in history is going. The end of an era. So much innocence is lost these days. I think at the time when I grew up in the early 70's thats the last of the innocence. Most children now a days know everything. I knew nothing much & I've done alright. Its sad children aren't children anymore there adults now. I don't have children but I do think its sad really. I did like Davy Jones he was probably my favorite Monkee like many others. Of course who can forget the Brady Bunch espisode. A time that will never be again. Not saying there weren't 'issue's in the 70's above (or the 60's either) but I was too young to know about any of that stuff (drugs etc). Its all sad. May Davy RIP.

it.I'm sorry about the negativity of my opinion. |
Everyone of us judges music in his/her own way. Usually I use the criterion of songwriting to evaluate the artist's worth. If young person at the tender age of 15 or 16 grabs a pen and does something with it, then I should rank this artist higher than somebody who relies only on producer's instincts. The same thing applies to older artists. For exapmle I think that Janet Jackson's "Discipline" album is one of her worst simply because she didn't write or co write any of its songs. On the other hand there are artists like Whitney Houston or Diana Ross who didn't write their own songs but have earned legacy due to their vocal stylings. We are all entitled to review every kind of music and reviewing always means putting somebody down to put somebody else up. Having musical taste means ranking music with regard to your own criterions of aesthetic values.

Justin Bieber co-wrote most of his songs, Selena Gomez has written a few. Personally I think a song sounding good is more important than who wrote it. I didn't realise Blue Letter wasn't written by Fleetwood Mac for a long time, but when I realised that it didn't suddenly become vastly inferior to Welcome to the Room... Sara because a band member wrote it.
But ob-la-di ob-la-da :wavey: |

But.....neither of those examples are good. Personally, the offend my ears. And the lyrics....You can tell they were sprung from immaturity. |
