The ANTI-LOVE SONG poll

It took long enough. Anyway, these are for the songs that are laced in bitterness, anger/rage, and utter annoyance. You know the point when someone is so fed up that, though they love you deeply, they have just about had enough.

Lindsey, you are a writer of some great anti-love songs my man. I can't...

Nico 02-22-2012 12:45 AM

If for some reason you all have another anti-love song not on the poll...

TOO BAD- YOU HAD ENOUGH TIME!!!!

 I'm kidding. Just share it and why you chose it.

When voting, you can consider the overall quality of the song HOWEVER it would be cool if you narrowed your choice down to which one of these anti-love songs is THE ONE that really packs the hardest punch in it's intent.

Vote however you want. It's all for fun. :wavey:

i LOVE about 8 out of these 10 songs :xoxo: ... cannot vote! :distress:

Nico 02-22-2012 12:48 AM

But you must vote!

I want everyone to vote.

A huge part of the Buckingham-Nicks era Fleetwood Mac, which most on The Ledge are fans primarily of, is that sort of resentment/anti-love chemistry as well, wouldn't you say?

I mean, not completely. But it is there.

Nico 02-22-2012 02:35 AM

Ok, it does not show who voted. :sorry:

So please, PLEASE explain your votes. Don't be scared. I just would love to know who voted for what. :wavey:

Dr.Brown 02-22-2012 02:43 AM

For me, an anti-love song works best without harmony, so I could not vote for the obvious choice of Go Your Own Way. My vote went to What Makes You Think You're The One - a great song where you can shout out the lyrics, locked away alone in your room, while sticking needles into a voodoo doll of your anti-loved one.

Nico 02-22-2012 03:03 AM

Dr. Brown, your response was SO excellent. I haven't voted yet, but your idea of a perfect anti-love song and mine are quite similar. Thank you for sharing.

Sleepless-Child 02-22-2012 07:46 AM

I voted for The Ledge. Wasn't "you're never gonna make it baby!" the meanest thing he could say to Stevie at this point in her life?? I think this song is about domination...:). Perfect vicious Lindsey song.

And i don't get why you choosed NGBA, but not SHN, those two songs, lyrically, are basically the same : i suffered for so long but now it's over. GYOW has this vibe too. Not vicious enough to be the ultimate anti-love song, anyway, IMO!

All in all Tusk Lindsey was a lot more angry than Rumours Lindsey.

CADreaming 02-22-2012 07:57 AM

Nico, great poll idea.

I chose WMYTYTO. That song grabbed me the first time I heard it and the drums are just killer awesome in it. Plus, Lindsey expresses his anger (and his pain) so well it's almost tangible.

McTrouble 02-22-2012 08:14 AM

Flipping heck - that was impossible. :distress:

The reason I voted for NGBA is because you always hear it in a slightly different way when he plays/sings it live.

When he sings it in that really slow and whispery (barely audible) way, it just sends shivers right through me.

But, flipping heck - that was impossible! :distress:

vivfox 02-22-2012 09:21 AM

All the songs are great...but I narrowed it down to The Ledge, Tusk and Caroline and thought which song of the 3 I like the best and Tusk won. I wish you had made the poll public. I like to see what songs each Ledgie would pick.

holidayroad 02-22-2012 09:50 AM

I chose 'Come'. It's a pretty well straightforward song...telling someone everything she'll regret by not choosing to be with Lindsey.

My 2nd choice would have been 'I Must Go'. It's not that I think these two are the very best songs in general....just the best to get his point across.

Nico 02-22-2012 11:14 AM

Vivfox, I know! I wish I made the dang poll public too. I totally perfected remembering all the songs but didn't pay attention to details setting it up.

Sorry everyone! Please share your picks!!!

Silver Springs 02-22-2012 04:48 PM

Well it looks like I'm the lonesome voter for "I Must Go". I just find it a quirky, interesting take on the whole "anti-love" genre. It's aware of it's own aberrations and it embraces them. Though that final statement could be used quite easily to describe any song on Go Insane, or even Law and Order.

Peestie 02-22-2012 06:59 PM

I can't pick... This is pretty much a list of my favourite Lindsey songs. I know that as soon as I pick one in the poll I'll instantly regret it and wish I'd pick another. And another. And another...

i know!! same here.

just look at this list of songs - and how i feel about them:

What Makes You Think You're The One? - LOVE
That's Enough For Me - love
I Must Go - like
Go Your Own Way - LOVE
Never Going Back Again - love
Not That Funny - love
The Ledge - LOVE
Tusk - LOVE
Come - love
Caroline - eh

but, let's see - Tusk and Come are more lust then anti-love for me. That's Enough For Me i love but it is also playful musically and doesn't have that angry-whiny-caustic punch that is so unmistakable in What Makes You Think You're The One, from the opening drum sound on.

GYOW is still a bit of a love song, not just anti-love, even if it is an ultimate kiss-off. NGBA is pretty, but not completely anti-love, and it's more happy and resolved about moving on than sarcastic. now Not That Funny - yeah, that's mean!! :D and The Ledge - now that's ultimate mean!! "you're never gonna make it baby!" but that crosses into hate of a person in general not just anti-love... if that makes any sense

so in the end, i'm going with What Makes You Think You're The One - it's unmistakable, in both lyrics and music and the way he spits out those words just fuming with anger!! loved that song from the first time i've heard it and even more after hearing all those live versions. on the top of my list of requests to do it live for him... even if he did mellow out now... love it!! :xoxo: :xoxo:

bangdrum 02-22-2012 09:12 PM

This is an impossible poll!! :(:distress:

For me,
What Makes You Think You're The One? - LOVE
That's Enough For Me - love
I Must Go - love
Go Your Own Way - LOVE
Never Going Back Again - love
Not That Funny - love
The Ledge - LOVE
Tusk - LOVE
Come - like
Caroline - eh

I'm gonna have to vote WMYTYTO for "anti-love" though... same reasons everyone else said.

Nico 02-22-2012 09:46 PM

My vote goes to...

Every single one of these songs is flawless, which makes me think that perhaps Lindsey could be one of the most amazing anti-love song composers in rock and roll. ;) No, seriously.

But after much deliberation and thought- and believe me Bee I LOVE "I Must Go" passionately- my choice had to go to "What Makes You Think You're The One."

When I first got Tusk about 12 years ago, this song was the one that really knocked me out on first listen. Why was this man so pissed off? Who was he singing this too? (Ok, I really didn't know the SN/LB history that well). I just couldn't believe it and I was quite impressed. I rather loved it.

Anger= passion. And passion really makes the world go round, especially artistically. Anyway, I love the visceral of this tune; the raw musical dynamic, the edge to his vocal. It's an incredible feeling to hear his vocal build up. And the lyrics, though simple, say so much.

Perfect anti-love song.

Amongst so many others.

shackin'up 02-23-2012 09:50 AM

Impossible choice. I went for WMYTYTO, simply because it's the most direct and angry anti-love lyric, but any choice apart from Caroline could have been favorite. Especially Not That Funny, The Ledge and TEFM, and what about Come.....man, this is a killer.

And Go Your Own Way is the best single ever, so that's impossible to avoid too. So I voted, but remember: I didn't.

bluefox4000 02-23-2012 10:17 AM

I know it's cliche But Go your own Way. Man I love it:thumbsup: I can feel that anger, man.

Mick

Peestie 02-23-2012 01:33 PM

I voted for Come because I happened to be listening to it... No other reason. Too hard to make a real choice.

michelej1 02-23-2012 05:18 PM

It does seem almost unfair to have GYOW there.

Michele

Peestie 02-23-2012 06:36 PM

I wish I'd voted for NTF now because it deserves at least one vote...

You're like me. I like to wait a while for the "underdog" to present itself and vote for it. This thread feels as though I'm expected to choose between a box full of pining puppies.

Lindsfan 02-23-2012 06:56 PM

As much as I love GYOW, and as deserving as I think both NTF, and Come are, especially...I had to go with WMYTYTO.
It's all been said, how hard this poll is :distress:

What Makes You Think You're The One? - As I rack my brain trying to decide, this one just keeps screaming out as the obvious choice IMO. Such a great song in every way.
That's Enough For Me - great song, but for me, not quite up there with any of the other TUSK choices.
Go Your Own Way - <3333333 but for this category, I just can't put it above WMYTYTO.
Never Going Back Again - More whimsical and reflective IMO than anti-love.
Not That Funny - This is my second choice.
Come - Third choice!

Both The Ledge and Tusk are classic nasty Lindsey, and The Ledge is actually my third favorite song on Tusk...behind WMYTYTO and SMAP. But again, I simply can't come up with a good enough reason to place either of them higher than my 1st choice:

Caroline - does nothing for me.

Not really michele. :) It is a valid Anti-Love song, and of course it's the classic, universally loved song on the list. But actually, with this poll I was hoping everyone would get into the mind set of which song deliverers the biggest punch in terms of anti-love and that message is concerned.

I mean, Lindsey's vocals on WMYTYTO are extraordinarily full of vitriol. The words are short, to the point, angry.

So basically, there a re a number of different ways to look at these songs. That is why it is so challenging. The popular song may be the popular song, but does it hit as hard as one or some of the others?

That is the question.

Despite how "obvious" GYOW is as an anti-love song, I've never felt that it packed much of a punch. Don't get me wrong, I love it. But it's so obvious as to border on the satirical. But with songs like IMG, the clear distaste for the person he's referring to is veiled with buoyant melodies, as to suggest that he finds great joy in his disregard. He's lost the passion to care enough about the subject matter that he just seems to take it as a joke. To me that carries far more of a sting.

Nico 02-24-2012 01:02 PM

I agree Bee. And what I love about "I Must Go" is how ironic it is. On first listen, I thought it would be an uplifting pop song to his love, but then I listened to those words and he's totally ditching her. How brilliant is that?!? Ironic songs have my heart because it takes a lot to be convincing with one of those. And LB slayed in this area when he wrote IMG.

I don't even really see it as an anti-love song actually. I suppose the wish that he could give her the world if she'd only take it just vulnerably outweighs the sentiment in the chorus for me, which sounds like bluster, false bravado and heartbreak more than it sounds of anger or anti-love.

Go your own way, but please come back.

Yeah, that seems to be a recurring theme.

michelej1 02-25-2012 02:11 PM

I like Stevie's comments on Lindsey's Tusk songs:

Not That Funny [she thinks it's about CAH, I guess, "you're here cause I say so line"]: The girls don't like that line. That's not a big line with the women here in America, but it's ok because that's how he feels. To whom he is speaking it to, it is true. I think that in this song that Lindsey is being very hones that he's angry and he's talking about some real kind of air relationships. I like to hear him talk about things because he's not a talker and he doesn't like to expound. He just figures either you understand or you're stupid."

WMYTYTO: "It was so raucous that the first time I listened to it, I just sat there in the studio going 'I wasn't on it. I wasn't there. I didn't sing on it. I don't know the song. I don't understand the words. I don't understand the music, and yet it's going to be on my album.' It was very strange."

That's Enough for Me : "It has been that's enough for me all through the album. I like it now. It's raucous too. Christine hates it. She will very laughingly took Lindsey straight in the eyes and say, 'I hate that song' and we all just die laughing because Christine can say it."

And, of course I love what she said about Lindsey not wanting them around during recording. "He wanted to be alone. He wanted to do his vocals alone, he didn't any of us gawking through the window at him or me dancing in the background or twirling my baton. He just put a big note on the door saying 'Out' and he would call you if he needed your services."

I like that her comments sort of acknowledge that she can be a feisty dancing, baton twirling irritant sometimes, a shawled gnat buzzing right in front of your nose.

I truly appreciate all the participation in this rather challenging poll. I will probably close it in a day or two. So for those who have not voted yet: get on that!

Nico 03-03-2012 02:02 PM

Guess I'll close this poll now!

So the overall champion is "What Makes You Think You're The One!!" :blob1::blob2::lol:

One of the best screw-offs set to music ever!

And GYOW, of course, was right behind.

I'm impressed with all your votes and this wasn't an easy feat, but I'm grateful to those who participated. Thank you! :wavey:

And thank YOU Lindsey Buckingham for writing these flaw-free anti-love songs. ;)

And like many truly great songs, I don't think most of Lindsey's can really be categorized. With WMYTYTO, in the first first he seems to be talking about his own mortality and penetrability. What makes you think you're the one who can do all of these things, because I sure can't. I can't shield myself. I can't be immune. So, then when he moves on to the next "kiss off" verse it's more effective, because he's made himself human and he's not speaking out of just scorn, but about the personal cost of always being the one who is there and leaned upon. Used.

So, then, what's magic about the last verse is that he's speaking prospectively. I'm not always going to love you and this won't last forever, but it's in effect now. I like the way the verses hang together, to tell a complete, dimensional point of view. Michele
