You And I. But Which Part?

Something has always bugged me about one of my favourite Fleetwood Mac albums. The sheer fact that Part 1 of You And I never made it onto the original lineup defies all logic to me. But is it just me being picky? Or is it just a bit superior to Part 2 in quality and mood?

Which is your favourite?

bluefox4000 01-13-2012 08:55 PM

Can't choose. Part 1 does fit the mood of the album better then 2......but hell I love part 2. Hard choice. I made my own Tango with both parts on:nod:

Part 1 all the way. It's weird though, Part 2 actually sounds like it should be part 1, & vice versa. :p

Lovely songs, both...

Well, like bluefox4000 said, it's hard to choose. But I prefer Part I. Maybe because is rare, unusual, for its sound, the "game" with the voices...I can't explain, is just Wonderful!!! I heard first the Part II, and after this, I looked for Part I, and when I heard it...wow, just amazing! I always listen them together!
So, for me, Part I. Regards!

They both suck. I refuse to choose.

MacShadowsBall 01-13-2012 11:29 PM

They are both nice songs. I went with Part 1 because I like the beat of the song better.

*le shock horror* Guys. Do we have a naughty corner available?

McTrouble 01-14-2012 09:17 AM

Love 'em both equally so I had to flip a coin - Part 2 won.

Artemis 01-14-2012 10:24 AM

I think I prefer Part 1, but I'm not overly keen on either of them anyway.

It would have been awesome if Part 1 opened Tango and Part 2 closed it.

TrueFaith77 01-14-2012 11:29 AM

well i think You and I Part I is so clearly Buck-solo sounding while Part 2 is such a pure collab between himself and Christine. Also, it has a particularly perfect "ending" quality for the album. SO, I would choose Part 2 for being on the album (if I have to choose and if it has to be a two-sided rather than four-sided album ;).

As for which song I actually prefer, hmm.....

That's how i have it on my Tango. Works wonderfully. Part 1 segues nicely into Big love:nod:

Someone on here once said the original plan was to only include two Stevie songs on Tango but WB intervened and demanded two. If that's true, I'll bet You and I Part I originally had a place on the album.

I like Part II way better--though I prefer Christine's vocal on it, which is more organic, less "produced" than Lindsey's.

Street_Dreamer 01-15-2012 06:31 PM

Part II is an atrocity compared to Part I. Part I is enough reason why TITN should be re-released like The White Album, Rumours and Tusk were.

Yes, it's hilarious. Heck, after hearing them, Warner Bros. demanded one.

Freudian Slip?

I chose Part 2. I always felt it was perfect as the last track of the album. The sound (just the music, not the lyrics) makes me feel like Lindsey's farewell song to the band. The volume gets lower at the end, like he is going away...

Totally agree! As I agree with all who said that Part I could be at the start of the TITN. Regards!

That's a tough one!!;)
I mean I always liked Big Love as the opening song. In fact from many of the FM albums, I thought this time they did match it! Never thought of YAI Part I as the opening song, but yes it's a good one too. More like a Tusk opening song style I guess, but cool anyway.

However I think Big Love was a better choose in terms of the 80s sound.

Maybe Christine and Lindsey were like, "Have you heard these tunes!!???" LOLOL

I hated Part 2 for a really long time. In my opinion, it was the worst Fleetwood Mac song right after "Oh Diane".
However, my partner loved it. The song lifted his spirits and made him happy every time he heard it...
And - though it took me months (at least) - someplace, somehow I made the strange discovery that I had fallen in love with it too, after all this time.

so I prefer it over Part 1, though it is really beautiful, too.

Part 1, by far.

drzubritsky 03-07-2013 09:39 PM

Went against the majority and voted for Pt 2, although I like both songs. Strangely, "You and I, Pt 2" was the first track I heard from TITN; it was played on my local Top 40 station shortly before the album was released. The DJ didn't identify the artist and my first impression was that it was a catchy, bouncy tune and I was pretty sure (but not certain) that it was a track from the upcoming FM album. Not knowing what to expect from TITN, it sounded radically different than anything FM had done up to that point.

I understand the criticisms of Pt 2 and, in truth, the song didn't wear that well after multiple listens. But I still have a fondness for it since it reminds me of that sneak peek I heard on the radio.

I didn't hear Pt 1 at all until about 10 years ago. It's a pleasant song but it feels like a lyric idea that wasn't fully completed, then dressed with glossy production. But I do think it should have been included on TITN, in place of "Caroline" or "Family Man".
