Teleprompter? Really??
I captured this image from the Melbourne EOS video...around the 00:46 second mark.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...leprompter.jpg
|
No doubt she has a hard time remembering the lyrics sometimes.
Aw...Stevie's getting old. :( |
I guess it's comforting to have it there? She may have written the lyrics but imagine a complete mind blank in front of all those people - horrifying
|
in the old days she would have to wing it and switch up or add new lyrics ... spontaneous unlike now where every show is exactly like the last the only change she makes now is to drop good songs from the set

Crazy thing is, she still messes up the lyrics sometime. Stevie is such a human... I love it! Wonder how long she been using the prompter. |
I see nothing wrong with it...it's not like she's up there clearly relying on the screens to feed her the words.
|
OK, I must be in the minority....
OK, I must be in the minority here, but I find it disappointing about the teleprompter....especially for the songs she's been performing for decades, you'd think those lyrics would be hardwired into her brain by now. Maybe it's a sign of damage that drugs did.
|
It's pretty standard in the industry now. The first time I heard of one being used was Ozzy about 12 - 13 years ago. Now everyone seems to have them.
|
I've noticed them at a few shows lately. When Dolly was rattling off one of her homespun Smoky Mountain stories, I turned around to look at the crowd and noticed a teleprompter...displaying the story she was telling. At their age, I can see the need for this. Even divas have their senior moments!
|
She sneaked many peaks at it during Soldier's Angel in Boston this summer. Don't blame her at all, that song has to be easy to lose your place in.

big deal we love her!
|
I don't think it's a matter of her forgetting words. She's lost her place in a song many times over the years - nothing new, lol! I see no problem with this or any reason to be upset.
|
Oh, I'm not upset. Bruce Springsteen has been using one since the early 90's. He isn't singing with his eyes closed. He's looking down at the teleprompter.
My point was that SN can't remember the words and stage cues for 14 songs, when we know ALL the words and stage cues.;) |

Big deal. I agree that its probably just there for comfort.
Now if she starts using Autotune.... :p |
I think all the artists today use the teleprompters. I think its alright to have them on hand in case you mind goes blank boy do i have those days all the time.
|
Would you rather she lip synch?
|
Everybody gets older. Artists who use it have said it's more of a comfort. I'm happy She's still performing. There's NOTHING at all wrong with this:nod:
Mick |
Well, my 2nd husband was a singer and he would forget lyrics all the time and just make them up - singers blank out after singing the same song a gazillion times...
And there's nothing wrong with using prompter.... I'm a professional prompter chick and I would not be able pay my mortgage if singers over 50 COULD remember their lyrics and "casual" banter.... Besides, doing concerts make for a nice break from all the boring speeches I have to listen to - and intensely pay attention to - try paying attention to the importance of the coloring of the label for french fried onions for 4 hours - argh! Or getting a script that normally takes 20 minutes to format and they give you only 30 seconds before the President goes on stage.... Or listening to some race car driver thanking everyone he's ever known for 20 minutes for driving in a circle (what my last three days consisted of!). I'm not complaining... It just gets boring... So, I say.... Please singers - use prompter more! The variety helps:) |
I noticed at the sf Fillmore shows she rarely looked down at it. I think it is mainly used to let her know about wardrobe changes. I thought it was cute when it read "go get your cape!" :)
|
My favorite that I've had to put in the script... " Pause and look concerned" and "pause for effect" and... "look amused"
But it's always fun to have phonetically spell out words ... Especially for certain challenged former leaders.... "new-cleee-rrrr". :p |

Did you listen to In Your Dreams? I'd rather her get rid of those in-ear monitors than the teleprompter. She can't help but fool with them on every stinking song. Give me the days of Elvis and Led Zeppelin and others who didn't rely on this technology. They rocked without it. Come to think of it, Stevie and the Mac did without it in the 70's and much of the eighties. Possible exception of a filmed event. |
If you think In Your Dreams was auto-tuned in any way beyond just standard voice production...
Also, I don' t have a problem with the teleprompter. Who really cares? She obviously doesn't rely on it too heavily, as she still has flubs, and she's not noticeably locked into it or anything. |
I think alot of artists have problems with the ear monitors I was watching these last award show I dont remember if it was the CMA's or the American Music awards last sunday. If I was a singer I would use a teleprompter because I will screw up the words on a tune.I agree about dumping those ear monitors.

I remember the opening night of the two voices tour. If you watch the bootleg DVD you can see a teleprompter during the lost song when she and Don are singing So You Wanna Be A Rock N Roll Star. I guess at her age fogetting lyrics can happen but it does seem odd that the bulk of her setlist is so tried and true that one would think she would not need help with those songs.
I was at a Melissa Etheridge Concert a few years back and my friends had seen her at one of the shows prior to this concert where they had requested a song from her 2004 album "Lucky" called "When You Find The One" in Montreal where she played it she had to consult a binder that one of her tech guys brought out with lyrics to all of her songs. I have seen her 19 times in concert and have never had that happen. She has flubbed some lines and made light of it on stage but the audience took it in stride and didn't mind. Matt |

Wa-Wa-Wa-What? There's a bootleg DVD of this concert? Is it just the bad fan vids on youtube? It was so good when they did Hotel California! |
It is a great thing...
So, she just finished a record that she wrote all the lyrics for. Without much rehearsal she played a lot of the new songs...everything happens so quickly memorizing all those songs would be a ton of rehearsal...disappearing Stevie.
I remember papers on the floor to the right of her mic since the Wild Heart tour. :wavey: I am so happy that her performances are less stressed, stress affects your voice and I find her more willing to free up her voice for emoting. The in ear replaces the sound system facing the stage. I think that it sucks and can hinder your performance...it so the singers can hear the harmonies of each other instead of randomly sing to blaring music. |
IMO guys....it's always the fans who know the lyrics best LOL :)
|
Lol

Also, the record just came out and some vids on youtube show a bunch of guys singing all the new songs with her on her Wiltern Birthday Show. :blob2: |

I can't sing 'Gold Dust Woman' in the correct order half the time. I know all the words, obviously, I just forget which ones go where...
And that's one of my all-time favorites. Come to think of it, it's my ringtone at the moment. |

Thank you gust for picking up the show...but more importantly the whole vibe going on. Thank you...:blob2: |
I would much rather she and anyone use a teleprompter rather than lip-synch. There's NO shame at all in using the prompter. Billy Joel used to keep a huge book on piano with all of his lyrics in it, he said it was there "just in case". Obviously he wouldn't have time to flip thru in the middle of the song, but it made him feel better (he now has the prompter down inside the piano).
I've seen Dolly Parton several times and her ENTIRE show is on the prompter including her "off the cuff" jokes (that she's been telling for 35 years!). She has said that it's really easy to lose your place in the song on stage. Streisand has said the prompter has helped with her stage fright, she's long been afraid of forgetting the words in front of crowd (which is why she rarely tours). They made a huge deal when Sinatra started using it. With Stevie and many others as well, there have to be songs that you just go into autopilot during. You start daydreaming and next thing you know you're lost. Don't forget Stevie has messed up the lyrics a ton of times over the years, the recording of "The Dance" had to be stopped while Stevie tried to get "Dreams" right because she forgot how it started. Whether your on stage or the president, the prompter is only there to keep you on target, that's all. |

Yes there was one floating around. I have a copy though at this moment I have no idea where it is LOL. Overall the quality is pretty good. The sound in Don Henley's set is not great but it isn't bad I found Stevie's set was pretty good for the sound quality. Matt |

I don't think it's a problem. She probably needs it "just in case" or maybe if she forgets what verse she's on. It's not like she stares at it. In fact, I've never seen her look down at it.
