Stevie's Performance on Buddy Holly:Listen To Me
|
Michelle Branch had on a Stevie necklace. :)
|
I had no idea that there was a concert that coincided with the album. What a cool thing! From that small clip, it seems like Stevie gave a great performance. Looking forward to seeing the entire show next month. I wonder if a DVD is forthcoming.
|
And it looks like Waddy, Sharon and Lori play/sing with everyone in the whole show... not just Stevie.
The odd thing is.... it doesn't look like Stevie was part of the group jam at the end..... she's the only one I don't see...?? |
The "house band" for the whole show was lead by Waddy Wachtel. The only thing missing is Linda Ronstadt LIVE, but her voice on the original production of "That'll Be The Day" can't be outdone. Stevie's contribution is a "must have," but I think the whole album is really worth getting.
You can read more about it here: http://truegreatoriginal.com/wp-cont...ly_goldmaq.pdf |
I think the highlight of that clip is seeing Lori and Sharon sing back up for everyone. It's like finally seeing the baby birds away from the nest if that makes any sense. And Stevie is kicking ass on Not Fade Away.
|
I still want to know why Stevie isn't in the all-star jam at the end.....

She did come back at the end of the show to sing another song. Whether this was with the whole group or by herself, she did do something else. There is an old thread from someone who went and posted the set list.
|
maybe she has a contractual clause that says whenever she's onstage she must be the main attraction... no getting lost in the crowd.... (sorta like she has to have to presidential suite in every hotel "because I demand it")

Stevie did 2 songs - not fade away and Its so easy. Heres the set list from i think Sept 7

Producer, manager and singer Peter Asher organized the Holly tribute at the Music Box Theater in conjunction with the release Tuesday of "Listen to Me" on Verve Forecast, a Holly tribute album to benefit organizations funded by Songmasters -- as the Grammy Foundation, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Artists House Music. The concert was filmed for airing in December on PBS. A reception on the Music Box's rooftop prior to the show had plenty of old-timers pointing out the legends on hand - Holly's widow Maria Elena, Phil Everly, legendary session guitarists Albert Lee and James Burton and Pricilla Presley -- while discussing days or yore at labels such as Warner Bros. and Capitol. While the music of the Everly Brothers and Holly piped through the rooftop's P.A., Phil Everly offered a few thoughts to Billboard on their days together in the 1950s. "When we were interviewed in the '50s, the first, second or third question would be 'what are you going to do when it's over?' The people writing the articles hated the music," Everly said. "Whether it was Buddy or Eddie Cochran or Don and myself, none of us thought it would last because that was what we kept getting told. Inside the perimeter, what we were thinking was -- and this is what we loved -- the cool thing was to do something original. That was important to all of us. i'm only here because Buddy was my friend. My great respect for his music has never diminished." Everly and Holly were greeted by an assortment of well-wishers, among them "American Idol" producer Nigel Lythgoe and Songmasters' Jennifer Cohen and Regan McCarthy. Enjoying the Texas-style barbecue were Pete Wentz, the Grammy Foundation's Scott Goldman, Grammy Museum's Lynn Sheridan, Vanguard Records A&R executive Bill Bentley, attorney Jay Cooper, PBS' Joseph Campbell, MFH's Bob Merlis and the first recipient of the Songwriters Hall of Fame's Holly Prize, Laura Warshauer. Booze and food kept coming out as the reception ran extra long due to the production starting an hour late. The show, written and produced by documentary filmmaker David Leaf with Asher and Isaak as co-hosts, featured six of the artists on the album plus video greetings from Holly fans Brian Wilson, Keith Richards, Ringo Starr, Jackson Browne, Imelda May and others. During the concert, Asher played historian, Isaak was comedic relief. "Buddy Holly was a factotum," he said before ad libbing, "yes, I said factotum. This is PBS." Guitarist Waddy Wachtel led a seven piece band -- with an occasional string trio -- that featured bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russ Kunkel, musicians featured on countless Asher-produced albums in the '70s. Artists spoke often about the eloquence of Holly's lyrics and the fact that his ordinary appearance and demeanor was an inspiration to so many; "we felt like we lost a friend when he passed," Graham Nash offered. ""In two, two and a half minutes, he taught you everything you need to know about life and love," was Lyle Lovett's comment. |

It's also unfortunate that she couldn't do anything with Raul Malo either. He has perhaps the biggest, purist tenor voice in country/pop music today. |

What's exciting is to find out is that Stevie sang not just 'Not Fade Away,' but also 'It's So Easy.' That's another Buddy Holly song Linda covered. I bet Stevie did a good job with it. I can't wait to hear it. |

Local Philly PBS (WHYY) will be showing the special again Monday, December 6 at 10PM (of course the time may not be exact due to the pledge drive interruptions). This reminds me of trying to tape The Dance back in 1997. :) It's a great show--I was told it would be rebroadcast numerous times this coming week.

PBS was given the show as a fun raiser, but it will be released to the public just as The Dance was. Right now, locally, you can buy the DVD with a pledge to PBS for $100.00, or you could record it yourself off the TV. |
Stevie's cut is getting prime airplay in both these previews:
|
Saw it last night.. Stevie was really really great... Both tunes!
To see where and when it airs in your state, check this site, there's a link at the top that's compiled all the pbs stations with dates and airtimes Buddy Holly |
If you're in the metro Atlanta area it's reairing at 9:30pm tonight on GPB (channel 8).
Nevermind, it wasn't. Mislabeled by Comcast. Nice. |
When did this Zooey thing happen, they still have her name listed on the website. Steve recorded this recently?
|
Just watched it, Stevie looked and sounded great. It is always interesting to hear her doing songs other than the ones we know and love ;) Chris Issacs intro to Its So Easy was awesome and HOT . Glad she got to perform that song also. The sound on my recording was a little messed up so I am going to rerecord it later. The whole thing was a very nice tribute with lot of cool performances, I liked Cobra Starship's Peggy Lee and the Fall Out Boy lead singer did a good job of course Stevie was the highlight

Stevie on TV (PBS) Buddy Holly: Listen To Me - The Ultimate Buddy Party
Maybe this has already been posted, but Stevie was just on this PBS Special.
I knew she was on the Buddy Holly Tribute record (Not Fade Away), but I had no idea there was going to be a video (DVD) of this. PBS stated that this is an exclusive for them until 2014 (I believe). So I guess the only way to purchase it is through them. And possibly only through a sponsorship of PBS. I'll be taping it when it comes back on tonight at 1:30 a.m. Central Time. Check your local listings. |

I just finished watching the show. What a great tribute to Buddy. Stevie was great of course, but I totally enjoyed the whole program, very enjoyable. Chris was great as a host. Also nice to see Waddy, Russ, and the girls remain on stage for the whole set too.

The show and the cd are great! I don't know if you had the opportunity to read the liner notes that accompanied the cd (PAGES of them), but here's what Peter Asher had to say about Team Stevie:
Not Fade Away / Stevie Nicks Stevie Nicks' voice and style are national treasures! She is a valued friend and as one of the very first people we invited to be a part of this project, Stevie had first pick. I initially suggested another song but Stevie chose Not Fade Away, and how right she was. I co-produced this track with my dear friend and colleague (and one of the finest guitarists in the whole of rock and roll) Waddy Wachtel and we brought in the legendary rhythm section of Russ Kunkell and Leland Sklar. Waddy and Stevie have worked together as a team for quite a while so it was the perfect setup. And I was very priviledged to join Lori Nicks and Sharon Celani as one of the "Bopettes" in singing our version of the original background parts! Stevie's vocal was cut live-she sang with an intensity and determniation that is a treat to hear. --- And how about Stevie on It's So Easy on the show? In the words of my friend Waddy Wachtel, didn't she kick the hell out of it?! YES, she sure did!!! Peter calls Waddy guitar maestro. I would have loved to have had Linda Ronstadt LIVE at this performance. As Peter Asher says of Linda on the liner notes for That'll Be The Day: "Linda is as big a Buddy Holly fan as I am . . . Linda's vocal is so powerful it makes me love her all over again--she remains one of the best singers in the world." Locally, on PBS, Chris Isaac stopped in during the telethon part of the show and had a lot of great things to say about both Stevie and Waddy. If you haven't seen the PBS program yet, there's still time! (Travis) love, blackcat |

When did Stevie record the studio version? Late 2009? I remember talk about the cover in Early 2010.
|
Knocked it out of the ballpark!
|
She really does this one well.
I keep the studio version of this on my MP3 player. The band plays it well, too. Who's the band? |
SHe did a studio recording of this?
|
Stevie had to leave right after "It's So Easy", for another event
|
Anyone have the MP3's? I want them on my IPOd!!! ;)
