misunderstood Stevie lyrics! :)

When I was a kid, I ALWAYS misunderstood some of the things she was singing. I went for years singing the wrong words, such as...

STOP DRAGGIN' MY HEART AROUND
"I said, 'Gail! Well, what am I supposed to do?' I didn't know what I was gettin' into..." (I just assumed Gail was a good friend of Stevie's)

STAND BACK
"Do not turn away my friend...black widow, I can bend!"

TALK TO ME
"Well I showed you all my GODS now isn't that enough?"

RHIANNON
do do do, do do do do..."Leannaaaaaaaaa..."

EDGE OF 17
"Just like the one we love, sings a song sounds like she's SAYIN'..."

ROOMS ON FIRE
"...it seemed to be the only thing that's drivin' the light..."

My best friend Chris recently told me he went for many years thinking she was singing...

DREAMS (this one's naughty)
"...when the rain washes, you cream your load..."

SORCERER
"Little woman on a star stream...in the middle of a snow drift..."

And finally, when SYW came out, my neice was 9 years old and would sing along...

GOODBYE BABY (this one's my favorite)
"I hope your heart's not broken, don't forget me...yes, I was out smokin'..."

What about you guys? Any funny things that you'd sing thinking it was the real lyric?

Troddew 11-11-2011 08:01 PM

my cousin used to think that the words in Stop Dragging My Heart Around were
"so you had a little gerbil and it drowned"

mikebise 11-11-2011 08:10 PM

Every time I heard "Rooms On Fire" on the radio in May 1989 (before The Other Side Of The Mirror was released~ with lyrics included), I was positive Stevie was singing:

"Long nights of wine cloud my memory..."

In 1976, I thought the chorus of "Rhiannon" went:

"Ee--YEAH--uhhh...
Ee--YEAH--uhh..."

I still sing this on "Blue Lamp"~

"And the light that shines
Through the shiny night
Is a lamp that I carried
From my mother's arms..."

deribish 11-11-2011 08:40 PM

I STILL sing along to ALICE with these words (that i swear she was singing when i first heard the cassette single in 1989): "some carry a stiletto in their car door, along with everything else that they carry."

hey... it makes sense. except Stevie doesnt drive.

mikebise 11-11-2011 08:50 PM

In the 1994 Street Angel tour book, Stevie talks about driving around the desert in her Jeep! :)

Not to mention Stevie behind the wheel in the video for "The Blonde In The Blue T-Bird"!!!

SuiteShangriLa 11-11-2011 08:51 PM

i dont really have any that i can think of. im usually too obsessed with knowing/reading the correct lyrics til they are embedded into my brain.

a friend of mine (non Stevie fan) was in the car with me once when i was listening to the BD cd and thought she said in After The Glitter Fades:
Even though the linen is sometimes laced with lice...its alright:lol:

CTDee 11-11-2011 09:14 PM

My son when he was in Kindergarten, was getting a ride home from school, and he told me when he came home that he heard that stevie nicks song " Just like the wide window" (EO17) LOL

markolas 11-11-2011 09:18 PM

I keep running into people who think she's singing "Just like the one-winged dove," which doesn't even make any sense. Some misheard lyrics are understandable, but others are so off-the-wall that it's obvious the person has a hearing problem.

well stevie has never been the best at annuciation in her singing

mitzo 11-12-2011 10:11 AM

I also thought it was "one-winged dove"

And that line in "Sisters of the Moon" sure sounded like "many black widow spiders and that ham and cheese"

SNicksed 11-12-2011 10:53 AM

Gypsy:

"She is down, safe, away from you now..."

beccamorrisfift 11-12-2011 11:15 AM

My sister sings, to this day: 'its a bit of golden brain.'

vivfox 11-12-2011 11:47 AM

In SOTM she sings: black robes trailing and a friend of mine thought she said black rose tray lamp.

vivfox 11-12-2011 11:49 AM

My all time favorite blunder came from a Ledgie. In Fireflies they thought Stevie was saying, "Everyone stays close to the fireplace."

Ha ha ha!!! That's really funny. It reminds me of the Mad TV skits where this woman played a crazy little girl named Dot. She was on Oprah once talking about how she forgot to feed her sister's hamster so it ate it's own foot and then she tried to baptize the hamster babies but they drowned.

When Edge first came out I used to think she was saying "just like a one window" which makes absolutely no sense.

APerfectLie 11-12-2011 01:03 PM

Paper Doll:
"Well I have forgotten you and your beautiful LIES"

If Anyone Falls:
"Seen many things today, I've never seen anything like you."

Rooms On Fire:
"it seemed to be the only thing thats DIED in the light."

In Your Dreams
"I'm always in and out of your LIFE"

I Can't Wait
"Go home to your cobwebs and think of your fire baby!" (I am still convinced she says this since nobody has a consistent clue as to what she is saying!)

Oh there are tons more, but I have to go back to work now.

Is this not what she says?

If You Ever Did Believe:
"You've left me now and it sees in my soul"

Secret Love: (I think everyone and their mom misunderstood this one)
"My secretly love secretly dies"

Straight Back:
"What can I say this time, what chord shall I play?"

She apparently says "Seen anything today... never seen anything like you" which makes no goddamn sense, but whatever.

God! Your interpretations made my day :) As a citizen of non-English speaking country I have to admit that often I was singing her songs in more a Suahili language, adding some bits of my native language. I can't even write it down here... there are no such words in this universe :) But you'd just laugh hearing me singing them!

Nickingham 11-12-2011 03:31 PM

Gypsy
"She was just a witch. She was just a witch"

Rooms On Fire
"She dreamed of a wanted luxury"

Gold Dust Woman
"A Thousand lovers pick their prey"

Dreams
"In the stillness of a memory"
and
"When suddenly who wants to wrap around your dreams" Like in the form of a question.lol

I still think that's what she says.lol
To me, I thought she was referring to the passion and love and what little of both were left in a relationship. So eventually; "it seemed to be the only thing thats DIED in the light." Because the 3 lyrics before that makes me think of this:
A guy whom she loves does not trust her completely.(ie: "Somewhere out in the back of your mind")So then he doubts her and thinks she's doing stuff behind his back, or has a hidden agenda, which isn't true.(ie:"Comes your real life and the life that you know") This leads to "It seems like it was the creation of some of those same old things" (ie:accusations)

I used to think it was "black or yellow, I can bend!"

PolishStevieFan 11-13-2011 08:13 AM

I remember when I first heard "Edge of Seventeen" (and to be honest it was a time when I was not that great in English... not that I am today :)) I heard "just like a white window sings the song, along she's singing". Imagine singing window people :)

jellyman10 11-13-2011 01:35 PM

I laughed so much at this thread I really hurt my hangover

sorcerer999 11-13-2011 04:04 PM

Oh, I almost forgot! When I heard Stevie's voice on the radio for the first time it was with Loggins on "Whenever I Call You Friend", and I thought they were singing...

"Sweet love burnin' on a Saturday night!"

bombaysaffires 11-13-2011 04:11 PM

"I Can't Wait
"Go home to your cobwebs and think of your fire baby!" (I am still convinced she says this since nobody has a consistent clue as to what she is saying!)"

I'm gonna need some help with this one... where in the song do you hear this?

Its near the end of the song! Here is a clip of just that part. It seems everyone hears something different

bombaysaffires 11-13-2011 09:35 PM

ahh... thanks APerfectLie. Agree this is pretty indecipherable..

What I hear: "something...the time when you make up your mind...something..." :)

Yes, that's how I heard it back in the day.
But judging from the following list, my hearing isn't all that great.

“Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” – Dust head hail, well, what am I supposed to do?

“Fireflies” – What called the feared song to those in the night

“Battle of the Dragon” – Have you been with friends, oh, ignore them all

“Bella Donna” – And the woman may be Zorastra!

“Storms” – Every knife that goes between I feel a little less

“Blue Lamp” – And the guardian of your child does not cry

“Seven Wonders” – I’ll make a path back, I’ll never live to see the beauty, the beauty, that dancing beauty again

“Straight Back” – Which chord shall I play

“Straight Back” – And a song begins to begin like a woman on the run

“Straight Back” – I was in, I was up, waiting for you

"“Blue Lamp” – And the guardian of your child does not cry"

ha! I thought these were the words originally too!

darklinensuit 11-13-2011 11:01 PM

Cool. Now tell me you also hear Zorastra in "Bella Donna".
I imagine she's the kid sister of Sandy Stewart or Elisecia Wright.

Clear as a bell (through the night) where she's supposed to be singing "And the woman may be awestruck..."
Yup, Zorastra.
I'd post a Youtube link of it but I don't think that's permitted.

Glad Stevie's a better songwriter than that ;)

PolishStevieFan 11-14-2011 10:50 AM

And what is she singing after each chours in "Seven Wonders"...? Because to me it's always sounded like "I'll never live to match the beauty Okay!... the rainbow's end ... hello, hello!" Or maybe it's "heaven, heaven"... I don't know!

Funny thing is, these actually work!

holidayroad 11-15-2011 09:22 AM

For many years I thought she was saying "I've been standing down the hall" instead of "Up the stairs and down the hall" in EO17.
