Demos that deserve to be recorded now

On Stevie's or Fleetwood Mac's next album, which of Stevie's old demos would you like to see released?
Not necessarily your favorite demos. I love "Blue Water," for example, but I don't think she could top the original piano version. And while it just slays me that "Space Needle" didn't make it onto TISL, I feel like that's the album it belongs to.

My pics would be "Forsaken Love" and "If You Were My Love."

What about all of you?

daniellaaarisen 10-16-2011 05:48 PM

Grace. You could not have picked two better songs.

Seriously, just imagine what those two would sound like with her current voice. I would ****ing die.

Aussie W/Heart 10-16-2011 06:02 PM

Yes definatly Forsaken Love & If You Were My Love.

I'm still holding out for Have No Heart and Joan of Arc. Joan of Arc produced in the same way as Soldier's Angel was for IYD could be quite incredible.

On Ice 10-16-2011 06:08 PM

I agree about "if You Were My Love" (must be a Fleetwood Mac Song) and my second vote would be for "The Dealer", just think it's a fun tune with a great chorus.

StevieNicksfann 10-16-2011 06:09 PM

Absolutely have to have The Dealer/Mistress Of My Fate

On Ice 10-16-2011 06:11 PM

Some of the finished and almost finished tunes should be released "as is" and not tinkered with, ie Julia, there have to be enough great versions to put the song on some kind of cd. Same with the "lost" Street Angel, I think is tucked away some where.

Machu 10-16-2011 06:37 PM

I agree with "If You Were My Love" and "The Dealer". I think IYWML is her best unreleased song at this point. It's already a classic to me so I would love her to officially record it.

I'd also be interested to hear "The Forest of the Black Roses" or "The Birds of Rhiannon".

APerfectLie 10-16-2011 06:45 PM

Strangely, the other day I was thinking about how it was such a shame Stevie didn't record more songs in 1998. Crystal and If You Ever Did Believe are amazing and I wish we could have captured more of Stevie during that time period. I then thought, wouldn't it have been awesome had she added a 4th disc to Enchanted and it would be current recordings of old demos? I think it would have been a perfect way for her to fully realize some of these songs without having people complain about her new album not being new songs. Anywho, my picks would have to be:

If You Were My Love
Mable Normand
City of Hope
Joan of Arc
The Forest of the Black Roses
Christian
China Doll

I don't know how I forgot about "China Doll". THAT is probably my favorite unreleased song before "If You Were My Love". It makes my heart break every time I hear it and her voice now would be great on it.

darklinensuit 10-16-2011 07:20 PM

"The Dealer" for sure. I wonder what she could do with "She Still Loves Him", "All the Beautiful Worlds", "Baby Doll", "Love and War", and "Sanctuary" in her current voice. Should BN ever do a tour or even an album I'd love to hear "Farewell Failure" if she would even attempt those long notes. I just don't think she could match "China Doll" today.

The Dealer. Enough said. :)

mikephxaz 10-16-2011 08:51 PM

Christian
If you were my love
Three Birds of Rhiannon(edited)
Christian
Forsaken Love
Christian
She still loves him
and did I mention...Christian??;)

WildHearted 10-16-2011 09:46 PM

China Doll, The Dealer, and Forsaken Love would be my bets.

Agreed 100%!!! Unfortunately we will never see it unless Stevie decides to admit the 80's actually did happen...

My other choices would be "If You Were My Love" and "Beautiful Ghost" (another long shot).

Macfanforever 10-16-2011 11:28 PM

I think she should take inventory and use these old demos then writing new tunes.

Once in a million years...I would never thought of that. But you are absolutely right on. Quite insightful, I must say!

I believe that All The Beautiful Worlds is a finished song. I really like that one.

Thrown_Down 10-17-2011 12:21 AM

All The Beautiful Worlds
The Three Birds of Rhiannon
Joan of Arc
Forest of the Black Roses
Priest of Nothing

Oh I forgot about Have No Heart! That is another fav of mine!

AliceLover 10-17-2011 06:14 AM

There are a bunch i'd *like* to see, but I'm really dying for China Doll and City of Hope.

TrueFaith77 10-17-2011 06:26 AM

Srsly someone should send her a list of all these we've mentioned. Though it might make her hate the Internets even more. But still, she can have another album out in a year...

Her people are all over this board. I'm sure she'll hear about this thread.

That was my thought when I started the thread, actually.

Y'know, just making sure Karen's whispering the words to "Forsaken Love" in Stevie's ear when the time comes.

Hi Karen! :wavey:

wheart 10-17-2011 11:33 AM

All the Beautiful Worlds
Mirror Mirror
China Doll
Blue Water
Three Birds of Rhiannon
Forest of the Black Roses

Blueletter18 10-17-2011 11:35 AM

Sanctuary and The Dealer would definitely be my top two, but I also looove One More Tomorrow!

Macfanforever 10-17-2011 11:55 AM

Stevie should just make a dump of all her demos in a cd collection for her true fans,With the state of todays crappy radio airplay results.I dont see why she should get her heart broken with sheety responce from radio.unless she get one of her demos mixed by a rap artist.Good grief.

KarmaContestant 10-17-2011 01:09 PM

Sanctuary, Starshine, The Dealer and China Doll. I think many of the others would not turn out well - not because of vocals but more because the feeling of the demos simply could never be recaptured. Looking at the mess that was made of Smile At You, I'd be very nervous about songs like Forsaken Love, Forest of the Black Roses or All The Beautiful worlds being re-recorded.

My preference would be that she just finish these songs, using the vocals that are already recorded, add harmonies as necessary and then have them properly mixed and produced. I don't understand Stevie's weird obsessiveness with constantly re-recording and reworking songs that are already essentially finished. Just because she's releasing something now does not mean it needs a 'now' vocal.

greendaze5 10-17-2011 01:37 PM

Definitely 'I Call You Missing'!

Me too  . I want her to release the Rhiannon themed album that goes with that movie she never made. We will never hear the final versions of so many of the songs mentioned in this thread...:(

KenshiMaster16 10-17-2011 02:41 PM

God, there's too many to single out just a few. I'd love to see what she could do with updating certain demo's too, like how she did Moonlight. Some just shouldn't be tinkered with, though. :)

This is a really interesting prospect. If nothing else, she should do this and realease them as bonus tracks.

porkpie 10-17-2011 03:08 PM

From all the demos I've found HQ versions of If You Were My Love, Smile At You, Three Birds - are there any other truely HQ demos available?

I think so, too! On many of them the vocals are just so damn good; it would be a disservice to some of those old songs if she re-record them.

Another one I'd love to hear re-recorded on a Fleetwood Mac album with Lindsey is Without You.

Well, Planets... I know it eventually got recorded, but the earlier versions are so different.

Stevie (or even we) should do a poll and the top 7 vote getters get recorded along with 7 new songs of hers for the next album. And I agree in some cases, the vocals don't need to get re-recorded, however, some of them should.

My 7 tracks:

1) Mistress of My Fate/The Dealer
2) If You Were My Love
3) All The Beautiful Worlds
4) Jimmy Come On Back
5) City of Hope
6) Christian
7) What Has Rock N Roll Ever Done For You?

While I love the idea of "polished" demos being released, I highly doubt that will happen for a few reasons. For one, there are practical and cost considerations: bringing those demos to release quality would require tracking down the multi-track session tapes, probably baking them, filling out the arrangements with additional instrumentation and vocals, and doing a final 2 track mix.

Also, keep in mind that demo vocals are often somewhat tossed off, without the care and perfection that would go into a final vocal. While there are many Stevie demos that have very fine vocals, my guess is that she wouldn't view them as up-to-par for official release. (Many of us could make a strong argument that demo vocals from 1983 are superior to released vocals from 2003, but that is beside the point).

Then there is also an emotional/philosophical desire that I'm guessing Stevie (like most artists) has with wanting to work in the "now", crafting new music that speaks to where she is today even if that involves recording new versions of old demos. It's part of maintaining vitality as an artist.
