Greatest Hits

This is probably a really self indulgent thread (somewhat like the man himself :p), but the subject of a Lindsey Greatest Hits album has been mentioned quite a few times in the threads lately. I was wondering what you all would pick by way of music, and what you would call it. Maybe even the shape and design of the box if you so wish lol. I'll start off.

Shape and Design: Lindsey's beloved Turner, naturally.

Title: Would it be in bad taste for it to be entitled "Young Mr. Rockcock"? :p

I think it'd make more sense to have the box set the shape of his TURNER guitar... He is known for that after all... ;)

Also, I think "Stephanie" deserves a place there as his first instrumental piece. It kinda sets the style for everything he did after that. And any set of Lindsey's has to have at least one version of Never Going Back Again on it! ;)

Haha. I've just proven how ignorant I am of guitars, havn't I? I had to research the one everybody keeps going on about him marrying, and I assumed it was the Turner since it cropped up alot. I'm a reasearch failure :(

Well that's where your own tastes come in, isn't it ;)

mylittledemon 11-20-2010 06:43 PM

HA! That's okay.

Buckingham could even finish off the title of "Out of the Cradle" and call the set "Endlessly Rocking..." I dunno if Mr. RockCock would fly

That said, I dunno if we'll ever get a Buckingham boxed set. Maybe when he really does "retire" he'll sit in his studio and remaster all of his old records..?

I'm not a fan of box sets. I'd prefer just a historically-accurate chronological Singles collection (which currently would be 22 tracks on one CD). i tried doing a double cd of personal faves for a friend of mine once to give him a sampling of Lindsey, but it didn't really work as well.

don't know, some of his singles are soooo not worth including, while some of the songs which were never singles are great, don't you think?

the list i put together for the most part includes songs that i personally would enjoy having, without others in between. if i was putting together list to give someone a taste of LB's music, i might consider two different lists, depending on the person and whether they are more into pop or edgier music.

GoldDustOrphan 12-07-2010 07:43 AM

Lindsey would be best served by a compilation that represents his best solo work and not the impossible task of cobbling together a "Greatest Hits" package when he's only had three singles make Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart (Trouble, #9; Holiday Road, #82; Go Insane, #23). Even a "Singles" collection wouldn't represent his body of work considering that his Warner Bros. solo material has only given birth to eight official singles.

What would work is something conceptually closer to The Dance. A recording of a live show that would allow him to present a mix of his best solo work, his three chart hits with FM, etc.

ramattack22 12-07-2010 12:23 PM

Here's my personal greatest hits CD I made for my car. I tried to represent every album with at least 2 songs (old gos and movie soundtracks are even represented twice each) and I tried to lean toward the songs that I thought would actually show up on an album like this although I obviously broke that rule a time or two.

Don't Look Down (w/ intro pretty much goes without saying but just in case..)
Bwana
You Do Or You Don't
Great Day
Peacekeeper (Original Version)
To Try For The Sun (Under The Skin Version. Sorry i like it better )
Countdown
Love Runs Deeper
Trouble
Under The Skin
The Right Place To Fade
Show You How
Go Insane
Deep Dense
Shut Us Down (Elizabethtown Version)
Wait For You
I Want You (Ready for the hate on this one :D)
My Little Demon
Down On Rodeo
Turn It On
Holiday Road

It may also be worth noting that I think Wrong deserves a spot on this album but it didn't fit with all the other songs and I just didn't want to give up any other songs though if I had to it would probably be You Do Or You Don't.

Go Your Own Way
Tusk
Trouble
Holiday Road
Oh Diane
(big hit in the UK)
Go Insane
Big Love
Wrong
(the video was in heavy rotation on MTV & VH1)
Peacekeeper

Loved the Words And Music sampler from 1992. He's doubled his solo output since then (seemingly in the past year, lol).

He's due a retrospective.

i keep looking at this list of what can be considered hits, and something seems to be missing. finally it occured to me:

Second Hand News! seems to be in heavy rotation on various classic rock stations, tv show backgrounds, etc. hey, there is even a FM SHN t-shirt! it was never a single, but neither was the Chain.

what about Never Going Back Again? wasn't it recently a hit on various country stations? i guess that was a cover though... which reminds me, although rarely, i hear NGBA on classic rock stations too sometimes. most of these stations (very annoyingly) play just hits.

BaronVonBielski 12-18-2010 02:15 AM

The reason I didn't include FM songs (other than the 2 live versions from LB solo show) was because it's a Lindsey Greatest Hits. In reality, it could only be stuff from his solo albums. Which makes the list short indeed.

starshine 12-19-2010 07:28 PM

I love the idea of a 'box set' for Lindsey to me he's long over due for one. I don't want to do any sort of list like others but I would like outtakes/extended versions included as well. I love 'Slow Dancing' and I think there's an extended version to that song too. Plus a nice booklet with outtake photos (which will maybe have better photos than some of the LP cover photos actually.) I really hope he does a nice box set sometime. Maybe 3 cds and 1 dvd included with all his solo video's and some live stuff included. Some thoughts.

Meowi 12-19-2010 07:54 PM

If it was in a box set with his Fleetwood Mac work, people would buy it.
I don't think a Greatest Hits CD with only his solo work would do him any good to the general public.

I'd buy it though.

LB Greatest Hits Album/Box Set

I'm sure many of you have done this before, but as I made my list I couldn't help but wonder what other people would pick.

2 Scenarios for you.

1. A LB Greatest Hits Album....designed to have the most popular of his songs as a solo artists. For maximum record sales.

(Rules... only from solo albums, only 10 songs, every album must have at least 1 song)

2. A LB Box Set....designed for the die hards, or for someone just getting into LB who wants to listen to changes over time, and different types of vibes.

(Rules any song in which LB was a part of, no requirements of album mention, outtakes are OK, 36 total songs)

This thread is FANTASTIC!! I love everyone's collections. I'm torn though...I almost just want LB solo stuff made into four discs of "periods" or "style" and "unreleased" stuff. I guess there could be an FM disc because it would be extraordinary, but let me tell you: I have the John Lennon Anthology and it has nothing from his Beatles period and it remains the most enthralling/amazing/perfect box set of music I own. I honestly think it's flawless. So maybe if there was no FM stuff there would be room for more solo LB stuff we haven't heard! :blob2:
