Snake! Snake!! Snake!!!
I'm not exactly Rudyard Kipling but I did have my own
Rikki Tikki Tavi moment tonight. This story is not for the faint of heart... It's been a long dry Summer down here in the Heart of Dixie. And if you're familiar with my other tales of creepy crawly things, you know what happens to them if we cross paths. This particular snake deserves his own story. And in telling it, you might think twice before considering attending one of the Ledge parties at my casa. I have seen less of these sometimes deadly creatures this year than I can ever remember. All Summer long I have not taken the life of one of these creatures. As a matter of fact I can only remember seeing one far down the road I mow. I had nothing to kill him with except the mower. And I would have had trouble getting to him. Since he was a black snake (non-poisonous) I let him go. Just a few days ago I was mowing the lawn for hopefully one of the last times this year. It's a big yard, about two and a half acres. And while mowing the thought of snakes, or the lack there of did enter my mind. It was a pleasing thought. Tonight after getting a license tag for my new Silverado and other sorts of things that necessitate a trip to Walmart. I made it back to the house to devour six tacos and my favorite cran-grape drink. And after flipping it back and forth between Fox News and CNN, a bathroom break was in order. I usually don't use many lights in the house. So I walk through the dark kitchen then down the hall and open the door to the bathroom. I flip on the light... and there it was! Crawling on the bathroom floor was a snake! I close the door quickly, run to the utility room to find something with a long handle on it. Run back down the hall with broom in hand. Open the door to do battle. The floor is marble tile, which I didn't want to break. Though believe me I would have if necessary. With the broom I headed the snake toward the closed glass doors of the shower. I didn't want him to get in there because I was afraid he'd go down the drain and come back later. How did I kill him you ask? As I held him down with the bristles of the broom. I took my sandal off, after making sure he didn't have much striking distance. And with my jungle skills I struck. While I wouldn't recommend using such weaponry to do battle with, it did the job. There you have it. Take heed to these words of warning though. Look around before you plop yourself down. You never know if Nag might be waiting for you. |

I'll bet I hate snakes more than ANYONE.:( |
In Florida some snakes are protected and actually help control other critter populations around your home. Down here you just call animal control and they'll come out and deal with anything you want removed.
|
Literally half an hour ago, my father was telling me about the time he, aged 12, killed and ate a snake. I can't even imagine--those things freak me out!
|
EEEK. If I ever found a snake in my house I'd have to move. How did you kill it with a sandal? Years ago I took a first aid and safety class. One day we were being taught how to treat ourselves if we were bitten by a snake. I asked the instructor if we would also be learning how to treat ourselves for a heart attack, because if I ever got bitten by a snake, I would have one.

Having lived in Texas and Louisiana, I'm well aware of the fear and horror snakes bring with them, but I'm not sure I could bring myself to kill one. |

Wow.I'm glad it was in the bathroom, not in the bedroom under the bed covers.Last weekend at the local octoberfest .They had snakes diplayed at the event.
They had a big white python I think in a big plastic container .he's got to be about 5 to 6 inches round. I should of ask questions with the owners. |

Oh yeah, I made a special box on my lawn tractor, which holds a handgun nicely. See f*cking snake? Blow snake into the next county! |

I'm reasonably terrified be them. I have a couple of friends that have them as pets.....when they invite me over, I always tell them, "only if your snake stays in it's ~cage~, and you don't take it out, and torture me, by trying to make me like it" (Yeah, that previous sentence is full of double entendres, and there's not much I see, to get rid of them:laugh:). |
I don't have a fear of them, but I sure as hell wouldn't want one in my house!

^^ That's probably what I looked like when I turned on the light. Homer I couldn't use the 9mm inside the house. Fringed I didn't have time to call animal control. Mezzo I was a little freaked out myself at the time. PaleShadow I smashed the head of the snake up againts the wall and tile with my sandal. It was bloody, but I didn't have much choice. Macfanforever I'm glad it was in the bathroom instead of the bedroom for sure. I wouldn't have been able to sleep. Skcin Tell Carrie of my snake troubles. JannieC If you'd been here, I would have let you guard the door while I went for the broom. |
^^^I have always wondered what I would do, if I found one in the house. SCREAM, at first, then I don't know. I know that I wouldn't let it out of my sight! Probably grab the trash can and a broom, and try to force it into the trash can. Then take it outside with the 9mm! But still, I probably wouldn't sleep for a week, afterwards!
The only good snake, is one that's been chopped into tiny pieces! |
I like snakes and I like holding them.
I will happily be around them so long as I know they are not venomous - or not going to crush me to death!!! I like to hold things like iguanas and geckos too. I still haven't held a tarantula but will get around to it some day - they are really quite cute furry things. But I'm not as keen on house spiders - they run around much too quickly! |
I do like Snakes. In fact, if I had the means to own one I would. I adore their little tongues and their curious faces.
Viv...Tarantulas? Cute? Really? Are you high? Spiders are devil spawn. I only truly become a girl when confronted with a Spider. My screams could no doubt be heard in High Wickham... I see one and I feel as though it's actually on me. *shudder*. I've set aside my oh so special copy of Storms in order to flatten the little feckers. I throw it down quickly on it and then do the dance of joy atop the book to make sure it doesn't run out flatter but still alive. Can't take any risks. |

I have a tenant that has a snake. When I have to go in there, I always ask if it's in it's cage, and ask which side of the room it's on, so I won't even look in that direction. I will happily hold your dog, cat, rabbit, or goat!:woohoo: |

See, that's why I like tarantulas - the smaller ones especially are quite fluffy little things. I also like their colour scheme - a combination of black and tan is right up my street!!! Hey, if you have a phobia you have a phobia - they are quite irrational most of the time but not much you can do about them unless you try hypnosis. I myself have a dread of flying (and right now I'm trying not to think of my flight to LA this coming Saturday), and also a shuddery dread of Daddy Long Legs (crane flies) which are the most harmless things ever!!! |

Like I said, house spiders are a different matter - I'll run a mile in the opposite direction!!! I love frogs and toads! |

I used to be so terrified of snakes, like I'd scream & run away in a panic. 2 years ago my son bought home a 6ft python, that he found crossing the road & wanted to keep as a pet:distress: I said over my dead body, NO WAY!!!. he told me it was really friendly, & its about time you got over your phobia of snakes Mum. So every day for 6 weeks he would insist that i touch the snake, i would every time run into my bedroom & try locking the door in time.. before he'd chase me around my bedroom with it:mad::distress: I freaked out every time.. he thought it was hilarious:mad:: one night it escaped from its cage, & was on the loose for 2 days in our house:distress: such a relief when the damn thing was found, only 15 ft away from my bedroom.. But this was the most terrifying thing that happen, few days later i worked up the courage to just pat it, my son said how about putting on your lap, i agreed as it was really about time i got over being so afraid.. anyway it was on my lap for like 5 seconds then moved straight for my neck, & begun to wrap its whole body around my neck, all i could see was 5 inches of head & 5 inches of tail, the rest of its body was trying to strangle me:mad::shocked::distress: I told my son to get this snake #@$^^@@ off me NOW!!, I deadset thought i was going to have a heart attack.. i can see the funny side now, but at the time it was the most terrifying experiance of my life.. eventually i did get over my fear, & now i love our pet pythons( we have 3) & also respect even the most deadliest snakes. Not in a million years did i ever think i would feel that way about snakes..
I have been bitten one time, but it didnt hurt too much.. anyway thats my little snake story:wavey: |

Spiders? I squish em with my bare hand. The big ones I squish with my bare heel.:wavey: |

I think really that the fear of flying is not the actual flying at all - it's a fear of crashing/dying in a plane crash. The least bit of turbulence and I think - this is it I'm going to die!!!! I'm perfectly OK with heights though - I wasn't very popular with other tourists one time when I was halfway along the Capilano Suspension Bridge in Vancouver and I got it swinging!!! :o:D I also like standing on the glass floor at the top of the CN Tower in Toronto and looking straight down!!! |

Although the people who can sit on a 20th floor balcony rail, and hang over it, well.........that's another heart attack! No thanks. Keep me on the ground! |
As I was getting started to mow the lawn a week ago.As I was moving the mower bags a big fat jucy earth worm about 4 inches long crawed on the lawn.I junped when I picked up the bag. Will if I jumped for a freaking worm. What in the hell I do if I see a big snake in front of me.

I saw something a little more pleasant than a snake
the past couple of days out in the yard. Three fawns were out there having a grand old time. I think two of them were twins. And as I write this I hear owls hooting. A country boy can survive... |
I remember a little thread a while back called something like...
"I'll bet I've killed more snakes than you have..." another iamnotafraid classic... So...the snakes are still around. I hate snakes... As a kid, I'd have nightmares about them...thinking that the wrinkles in the bed sheets were snakes coming to get me. And no, I did not see that cult movie..."Snakes on a Plane"... for fear of nightmares. As for Aussie W/Heart.... I could not have been as loving a mother as you are...the kid would go and have to move the snake with him. I live in a semi-arid state...and the neighbors have reported rattlesnake encounters. I fear the day when I get to deal with one. I wouldn't even know how to kill one. I commend you courageous people! As for iamnotafraid....would you even notice a snake if 'Bama were playing on TV??? |
Quote:
I'll have to think about that one. What's weird is we (BAMA) used to have a quarterback called Snake. |
Last night I almost stood on a small black snake in our yard , whilst feeding our dogs.. i thought it was dead at first, so i got the shovel & poked it gently, it moved so I pushed it on its way. He was lucky i have a changed attitude towards snakes now, as i would not of hesitated to kill it..
Besty lol:thumbsup: don't worry, that thought did definatly cross my mind.. |
