Crystal
I was just listening to this over and over again. Puts me in such a metaphysical mood.
I was thinking that this song could be the worlds next discovery from Stevie. I think the world is migrating from Landslide to Leather and Lace, but this song is just beautiful. Someone is going to rerecord it someday and everyone is going to be like "that's a Stevie Nicks song." |
I like Crystal a lot. Then I heard the Buckingham Nicks version and I like that one even better. Then I heard the Practical Magic version and I love that one. That version could put me in a metaphysical mood. It has the same "sound" as the acoustic version of Trouble in Shangra La. I love that sound.

I love the,"Practical Magic" version as well! :) And I have to agree, this song is very rooted in the metaphysical.
It's been a long time since I have heard the, "Practical Magic" version. I searched here to see if I could find a mp3 download but it's not coming up yet on a search. If someone has an mp3 version would you be willing to kindly please share? Thanks in advance. :D:) |
The Buckingham Nicks version will always be my favorite, I think.
I wish we had a version with Stevie on lead vocals from the 70's, I would love to hear how she would have sounded on it. |
I like the White Album FM version best but Stevie's Practical Magic version is ok too, especially the ending "I turned around and the water..." that whole ending gets me, so I like hers. Anytime I'm driving down south to FL through those TN mountains on my way to the sea, that songs either physically playing or in my head. :)

Does anyone know why she recorded Crystal for PM? I've always wondered how it came to be..

I just can't get into the first 2 versions of the song. Hearing a male sing what is a very female song just doesn't work IMO. I think the Practical Magic version is just beautiful. I adore her the wisdom of her older voice when she sings: "how the faces of love have changed, turning the pages. And I have changed oh but you, you remain ageless." Not to mention I think the ending of the Practical Magic version is just incredible, as is the production.

I remember the first time I listened to the Fleetwood Mac White Album I was on a boat so when Crystal came on the feeling of being surrounded by water and listening to the song really put "in" the song. And the instrumental part at the very end of it rolls along just like the waves of the ocean. Listening to it, it was almost like the ocean and the song were together as one which was really far out! It was one of those musical moments where you feel like you are totally into the song.

For a song that has lived three different lives, it's still never been heard/performed live!
I like all verisons of the song: Buckingham Nicks - Fleetwood Mac - Stevie Nicks |

Interesting thought: It seems like even before they joined Fleetwood Mac that Lindsey and Stevie were ending their shows with ballads...as this seems to be the last song of the show. Interesting. I love how Stevie sounds all southern when she says goodnight lol |

this thread is very timely. I was shopping for wrapping paper at Rite Aid this past Saturday and I heard a very familiar voice and melody but couldn't place it at first. It didn't take me long to realize it was Crystal, the original Fleetwood Mac rendition. Not exactly the song I'd expect to hear at Rite Aid so it took me a second to realize what it was. I smiled to myself and started singing along, all the way up to the check out counter.

I walked down the aisle to "Crystal" at my wedding, it was so beautiful and perfect for my day!

I agree that its such a moving and timeless song. The way Lindsey sings it gives me chills (and I love that Stevie reclaimed it too). I'm surprised it wasn't played at every wedding reception in the 70s. |

I'm so happy they re-recorded it for The White Album. Good taste, John. ;) |
I always wonder how it came to be that Lindsey sang lead on the song in the first place. This is the only song of that nature, correct (as in, it was written by Stevie in it's entirety but Lindsey sings lead throughout)?
|
I love Crystal. As a high school student in "75, this was the song that made me a Stevie fan. My fav version is the Buckingham/Nicks live version. I think the reason that Lindsey sang on the BN version and the White Album version is because she didn't think of herself as a great singer. She wanted to be known more for her writing.

It's certainly an anomoly in their history that Lindsey is the lead singer on a Stevie song. It would be a great question to ask Stevie how that all came to be. Perhaps the reason is already out there. |

The old live version of Crystal is awesome, something about a young Stevie ending wail just sends me to a different place. This would have been an amazing concert song back in the day, but Stevie's harmony alongside Lindsey on the White Album is priceless and I'm glad it was recorded the way it was. The new version from Practical Magic sounds rushed and should have been sung in a softer voice like her vocal on Call on Me for Magic.
