Have No Heart

I have to admit I like moody, atmospheric Stevie and this song is that. I really like this demo. It sort of very discriptive song about a young, evil girl. Once again, unusual subject matter. When was this written and who inspired it?

Oscar Wildes "The Birthday of the Infanta"

http://www.classicreader.com/book/1982/1/

"'Mi bella Princesa, your funny little dwarf will never dance again. It is a pity, for he is so ugly that he might have made the King smile.'

'But why will he not dance again?' asked the Infanta, laughing.

'Because his heart is broken,' answered the Chamberlain.

And the Infanta frowned, and her dainty rose-leaf lips curled in pretty disdain. 'For the future let those who come to play with me have no hearts,' she cried, and she ran out into the garden".

I read that story when I was a kid and it really affected me. The fact that the dwarf was sooooo happy before he saw his own reflection really broke my heart.

Gorgeous demo! I think this song would have fit in quite nicely on IYD...just sayin

Morgana 07-19-2011 02:03 PM

Thank you so much! In my humble Stevie opinion this is one of her best! Wow!

Jumping on the "Have No Heart" love-wagon. This is one of my very favorite TISL demos. I always thought it would be a great grand ballad sequel to Beauty & The Beast, except BETTER! The melody is dark and sweet & this is Stevie at her best in distilling a song from a book or short story. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!

Ahhh, I forgot about this demo. One of my favorite Oscar Wilde stories.

I love that she can take the words of a great writer and turn them into these little musical gems.

Well it is a good song. IMO I have to say it wouldn't have fit on IYD for that reason

One of my favourite demos of Stevie's though, at least it is listenable. I find many of them to be hard work to listen to. I know many people love the demos but I find most of them intolerable.

I am not a big demo fan either - and seldom see how demos are better than album versions - but this kind of dark brooding slow compelling Stevie stuff rocks my world.

Not a big fan of this song. I don't think it's a TISL outtake either.

Demo is from 1995.

I love the demos in most cases much more than their album counterparts, with a few exceptions. All the Gypsy demos can be tossed in the trashcan and the album version of Smile At You can be tossed out but the 3 different demo versions are spectacular.

Can anyone share this? I really like this. It's sooo dark and atmospheric. Like that she is writing about an evil girl.

Why do you say 1995? I always thought it was recorded during the Mirror era. The way she sings with the girls and theres a demo of Doing the Best I Can that has a very similar piano part.....I could be wrong though

Totally agree 100%.

Totally disagree 100%.

Also agree that this song is beyond amazing. I first got it in the mail on a Friday afternoon back in 2001, and after listening to it once, I put it on "repeat" and let it play non-stop until I went to work the following Monday morning.

(By the way, chriskin, that's a great quote in your signature! ROTFLMAO!)

thanks. I've always thought it was pre TISL judging by the vocal. it's really quite amazing. Sounds very Wild Heart era to me!

I hear none of TWH era rasp on this, though you're right, it's also not as flat as much of what's on TISL. I agree with vivfox, sounds mid-'90s to me.

I think this is a great example of a song where the vocal interplay between Stevie & her backup singers helps the track shine.

One of my absolute favorites. I'm working on Great Expectations right now with one of the students I tutor, and we're going to listen to this song when we analyze Estella.
