Queen of Pop?
The last issue of Rolling Stone crowned Gaga as the Queen of Pop...resulting in reader outrage.
After leaving it up to the readers, Madonna won by a landslide, getting 5 times the votes that Gaga got! http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ph...110706/0906358 Of Madonna, the magazine said: 1. Madonna To say that Madonna won this poll in a landslide would be like saying that she was a kind of popular pop singer in the 1980s. It wouldn't even begin to explain the scope of the situation. She received five times as many votes as Lady Gaga, who landed in second place by a very comfortable margin. The only persistent criticism that Gaga has dealt with in recent years is that she's too much like Madonna. It's a hard shadow to escape. Madonna is a musical icon without peer. Her run of hits over the past 30 years is simply astounding, and when she hits the road, tickets sell like it's a Led Zeppelin reunion tour. Sure, her last few albums didn't match up to the classics. Nobody cares. She's Madonna. Lady Gaga has accomplished more in recent years than any artist of her era, but she's still got a long climb until she reaches Madonna level. It's very likely that no other artist will ever reach it though. Her manager Guy Oseary recently tweeted that she's started recording her 12th studio album, so clearly she has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. (Elton John ranked 9th. ) |
Madonna will always be the Queen of Pop and Michael the King!
LG fans are just jealous, most (esp on youtube) sound like annoying teenybobbers that need a lesson on reality! :wavey: |
I never liked Madonna, so I could never call her my personal Queen of Pop. But then again, it's difficult to think of somebody who could take her title. If we weren't being picky when it comes to genres and sub-genres, I would probably say Annie Lennox. But then again, I have always had difficulty categorising artists. For me, labels are for tinned food.

Madogga and Lady Gaga are similar. In the fact that they both made a massive career out of ripping other people off. It doesn't take talent to copy people, it takes talent to pioneer, neither of these women have pioneered anything. They've just glued together some other awesome people and shouted about it, really loudly. |

Eh, half of America thinks my favorite singer is an overweight old lady who sounds like a goat. Taste is completely subjective. I don't care for GaGa or Madonna and think that their music is almost entirely the product of others' work (especially in Madonna's case), but I'll give them credit for inspiring many.
And really, I may not like her but I completely agree that Madonna is the Queen of Pop. She may not be able to sing worth a damn, but she's been one of the most influential entertainers in history and an impressive chain of hits. GaGa may take over eventually, but two albums cannot dethrone Madge. Especially since her stock seems to have already fallen considerably. It bears mentioning that 21, another pop album, returned to the #1 spot after BTW spent only 2 weeks there. IMO, Gaga isn't even this year's Queen of Pop. |
No matter your personal opinion of Madonna, you can't deny her incredible - and memorable lasting power or her permanent imprint on pop culture. Her songs have left a mark in the lives of probably billions of people, from Holiday to Music to 4 Minutes To Save The World.
The only person who manufactured Madonna is herself - she was contrived, yes, but all at her own desire; she was never the product of another's invention. |

I did like Madonna when she first hit the charts. Then she started to get naughty and nasty in later years.Going by decades .Yes in the 1980's she was the queen of pop.now time marches on to now.Lady Gaga probably got to fight with Katy Perry as of now this decade is still to young to tell.Leave it to RS to nix out Nicks again ."No pun intented".Hehehe.

Why so much hate for Madonna? Or rather, why so much hate on this forum???
Madonna is amazing, and just because you don't think she's deserving of a pretty pointless title won't take away her hard earned success. Madonna is as good as it gets in pop music, and is extremely popular all over the world. I mean come on, Vogue? Deeper and Deeper? Take a Bow? The list goes on and on for flawless songs that make up an intimidatingly long career. Annie Lennox has much more talent yes, but doesn't hold a candle to Madonna in terms of actual sales and success. For the record, if it were completely up to me I would say Janet <333 |

Just when exactly did Madonna spew vitriol about you on a Fleetwood Mac forum? |

Queen of pop?
Hmm. I guess it depends on what defines Queen of Pop. In terms of sales and money making, there is no doubt Madonna is the most successful woman in the history of pop music. You can't deny numbers. Sales numbers or money numbers. Her longevity is impressive as well. She still makes headlines, though now it is more often for her personal life. When she nabs a new young man, gets a new unpleasant cosmetic procedure, or something else scandalous, she generates a lot of ink. And her tours certainly make news. And lots and lots of money. Does she really sing live? Reports say a little yes, a lot of not really. But that is not a true litmus test of pop stars these days. And let's face it, her voice was never really the selling point. Her entire career has been about miraculously savvy image management and a nearly spotless record of being able to predict trends in popular music. And I will say, adopt them and sell the hell out of them. On the downside, she set an unfortunate trend of "co-writers" taking ownership of songs they didn't really have a hand in creating. Not that such things haven't happened before but she really takes the cake. As much as she may have tried, she will never have credibility as a writer or a producer, in spite of what the album credits say. But she is incredibly wealthy, incredibly famous, and that was always her true goal. She has never made any bones about it. In my eyes, she is a genius at the business of a being a pop star. Musically, she has great instincts, but I don't see her as an actual creator of music. She is like a studio head who makes music and movies about the character Madonna. A great achievement, without a doubt. But that's an entirely different animal than what I look up to and admire about musicians. She created an entirely new template of what a popstar could be. That had a cultural impact and it changed the music business. For musicians and writers it did not create a better place, IMO. She will always be more Elvis than Buddy Holly. More Donna Summer than Joni Mitchell, and more collage artist than master painter. I am more comfortable calling her the Queen of the Music business. Not the queen of any particular art. She is more a musical Donald Trump than anything else. |

All things considered, I love Madonna, her music and all the little things she's done to contribute to pop culture. I don't expect celebrities to be role models to fans, so the scandal and shock never bothered me since it's all part of the whole entertainment package she presents. |
