Bangles or Go Go's?
In the 80's there were a number of girl groups but these two bands seem to stand out because of playing their own instruments & ect.
What was your fave? It's hard for me to pick because I love Belinda Carlisle but I liked the Bangles sound better & they had more hits. :) |
You're killing me here--the Bangles were my absolute favorite band growing up, the Go-Gos a close second. I roped my best friend and sister into many, many performances of Manic Monday. And this was the late 90's-early 00's, so my obsession was definitely not normal. I still hold a soft spot--someday I would love to name a daughter Susanna, partly in honor of Ms. Hoffs.
I'm tempted to go with the Bangles out of nostalgia, but I think the Go-Gos were (and are) the stronger artists. I just saw them live in May, and was blown away--seriously talented musicians. I don't think they get enough credit for that, really... |

Love that song! :) |
It has to be the Go-Go's! I do like the Bangles but I really love the Go-Go's. I also think they wqere far more influential, having come around earlier. Would there have been a Bangles without the Go-Go's? Beauty and the Beat was, I think, the first album to be entirely written and played by women that made number one.
I also love God Bless The Go-Go's, their 2001 "comeback" album. Throw Me A Curve and Unforgiven kick ass! Big Belinda fan here too, Real is such an underrated album, but I often think that Jane gets forgotten - Rush Hour is an 80s pop gem! I also seem to recall reading in Belinda's recent autobiography that Vicki Petersen from the Bangles replaced Jane (?) on one tour because she was pregnant and close to her due date. It may have been for the Return To The Valley Of The Go-Go's tour... |
love them both~
|
The Go-Go's!! Belinda is so amazing!!
|
Don't particularly like either band, but just wanted to say that I saw the Bangles last year in concert (they were the support act for Pat Benatar) and they were terrible. Out of tune, couldn't hit the notes and couldn't really get the crowd going. I'm sure they were ok in their day, but in my opinion they certainly aren't good now.
Then Pat Benatar came on and saved the night... |
Love The Bangles best as a group, but I love Belinda solo!

(Hmmmm, now that I think about it, I've noticed that most bad reviews of US bands on tour come from either Australia or New Zealand...I'm thinking that it's a Southern Hemisphere thing. Or, US musicians need to get acclimated to drinking Foster's.) Ok, back to the topic: I saw both bands at the height of their popularity (read: back in the '80s)....gimme the Bangles ANYDAY! Pro-Tools & Pitch Correction software was probably thought up by a Go-Gos fan for Belinda Carlisle's live performances. (just too bad it wasn't invented 30 years earlier....now we have to put up with Taylor Swift because of it....eewwwww!) |
Bangles! Susanna Hoffs is a great singer.
|
Go-Gos. Better songs that make me want to sing, dance, and take a vacation and fall in love. ;) Susanna Hoffs is so self-conscious it irks me. She's just always bugged but I do like her. Just not nearly as much as Belinda. Though later in her career she also bugged. Go-Gos 4-eva!
Ah yes, I'll take my 80s video with cheese, please. :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLXlwKbLjDM On edit: And there has YET to be an all female band that was as successful as they were. |

bite your tongue! :p |

Well, I take that back...maybe now that Taylor has bronchitis she should attempt to do her shows instead of cancel them; she MIGHT actually sing in pitch while she's ailing. |

Whos the better singer out of Belinda & Susanna? |

No wonder there were piles of blow in the studio...it was to keep the engineers from falling asleep while Belinda butchered line after line (no pun intended) to keep in tune. |
The Bangles - for sure! The GoGos have a place in my musical history, as my mom loved them when I was little.
I was also a big fan of Bananarama, Expose and En Vogue. |

They're such different bands to me; I don't think I can choose one over the other. I haven't heard much of The Go-Go's beyond Beauty & the Beat (which is a great album). I like The Bangles earlier stuff - Hero Takes a Fall is probably my favorite song from them. The got a little too slick later on.
|
I've seen the Go-Gos twice in the last 5 years, and Belinda sounded good to me. Maybe her live performances have improved since she's no longer snorting the blow.:D
I like both bands, although I have more memories of the Bangles when they were popular. Eternal Flame everywhere all the time! |
I like both.They both have catchy tunes.Bangles Manic Monday.Go Go's Vacation.Ooh. I love 80's hair...
Other tunes I like from all of them. Ok sorry about drifting off topic. does anybody remember Bananarama, |
Stevie 's current fave guy, Dave Stewart was married to one of the girls from Bananarama at one time & she was also in the early 90's group Shakespear's Sister that had the hit 'Stay'. She was the freak in that band, maybe that's what scared Dave off!
One thing Belinda & Stevie have in common is what I've heard from more than one person is that both sound like goats. grrrr!! |

I do like both bands but I think I remember the Bangles more (later 80's) more so than the early 80's when the Go-Go's had there time. I think I liked more of the Bangles songs too (or knew them more) Esp the over played Walk Like an Egyptian (on MTV when it did play videos--the best time and the best VJ's than too) its become a sad channel now don't watch anymore. Anyway, loved Manic Monday and Hazy Shade of Winter but I do like Belinda Carlisle solo too . The Go-Go's might be the better band musically but I really don't know enough about all of them to really comment on that. Oh well they both had there 'time' in the good old '80's days.....hair bands and all that. What a mix it was in those days.:D

Both
I really like both equally. I have each's music. I have seen the Bangles live though. They were missing one member, but they did look & sound amazing. I was really close to the stage. I even recorded Walk Like An Egyptian (did I spell that right?) with my camera because it's probably my favorite song.
Lee :) |
The Bangles.
I really adore Susanna Hoffs. |
The Go Go's.
End of thread. |

That said, I do like the songs "Vacation", "Turn To You" and "Head Over Heels". |
In the beginning, neither band were very proficient on their instruments. I've heard from reliable sources that the current lead guitarist in Paul McCartney's band (Rusty Anderson) did almost all the guitar work on the first two Bangles albums.
Doesn't matter to me, I still like both groups, but I like the Bangles a whole lot more, though. |
The looks dept .they are all hot...
|
The Bangles all the way.
The Go-Go's are annoying, not sure why. They just are. Although Jane Weidlin (sp?) was a more funny sort of annoying when she was on VH1's The Surreal Life. |
I'm a big fan of The Bangles; I have all their albums. I was never a Go Go's fan...a little too girly- gimicky for me.
It was generally cited -- back in the day - that The Bangles were a stronger band/more accomplished musically& intrumentally. I'm indifferent to the Go Go's. |

I like both bands but I tend to think of the Go-Go’s as more of a party band whereas the Bangles were more musically inclined (not sure why others thing the G’s are). I really only liked the singles that the Go-Go’s released but I could listen to the full albums of the Bangles. Also, Dodfather, the Bangles were around just as long as the Go-Go’s. They had an EP in 1982.

I loved Bananarama! I still have their cassettes from '83 to '86. lol
As for The Bangles or Go Go's, definitely The Bangles. Quote:

I've been listening to Belinda, The Go-Go's, and The Bangles a lot recently. Like I said before, the only thing the two groups have in common is that they're all-girl bands. I enjoy both groups quite a bit. Their hits weren't necessarily their best songs; Walk Like an Egyptian is ridiculous, and Vacation is only a little less so.
Beauty & the Beat is by far the best Go-Go's album, tho what I've heard of Talk Show is pretty damn good. I haven't heard God Bless the Go-Go's. Belinda's solo material is way different from her work w/ the group, and I like it a lot. Runaway Horses is her best, I think. The Bangles' first album, All Over the Place, is my favorite. They lost some of their edginess after that; their two biggest hits, Walk Like an Egyptian and Eternal Flame, are pure garbage, IMO. Liverpool, Hero Takes a Fall, Hazy Shade of Winter, Where Were You...?, Following, Be With You...those are all great songs. |

I'm also thinking that Vision of You would sound great followed by Italian Summer on a mix CD.

As for Belinda's solo career I do love Runaway Horses, it's so consistent, but I also really like Real (1993), the album everyone forgets about - haha. It has Lay Down Your Arms and Big Scary Animal on it, as well as Goodbye Day. Have you checked that album out? Quote:
