Casey Anthony found not guilty

Today it was found that Casey Anthony is not guilty on murder charges. Who else feels incredibly ashamed of the Justice system? I do, and I'm not even from America. Really though, why can't we all go out and kill everyone now that we know we can get away with it? Ridiculous.

Omfg. I know. We need justice for Caylee. Was the jury high or something?!! I strongly believe Casey killed her daughter. It's horrible. I cant believe it.

HejiraNYC 07-05-2011 03:03 PM

Well, this is what happens when the death penalty is legal in a state. The jurors probably felt uncomfortable sending a woman to her death unless there was something, anything concrete that was irrefutably damning. But unfortunately this case was a $h*tshow of epic proportions- full of lies, speculation, sketchy circumstantial evidence and conflicting stories. Without any hard proof, it was pretty much impossible to be 100% certain one way or the other. And unfortunately death is a 100% permanent sentence.

By the way, I carry garbage in the trunk of my car all the time- when I go away on the weekend. Trust me, it does smell like death after a couple of days.

TerraRhiannon 07-05-2011 03:09 PM

You're right, maybe if Florida didn't have the death penalty they would have sentenced her to prison... I guess I would feel the same way about sentencing someone to their death. I don't believe in the death penalty for different reasons, but Casey was for sure without a doubt guilty of murder.

DavidMn 07-05-2011 03:11 PM

This is o.j simpson deja vu.

the jury slapped baby caylee in the face by this verdict~ it's a travesty of justice & it makes me literally ill~

I agree. But the O.J. case was a bit more understandable in the sense that the two people murdered were adults, fully capable of defending themselves. And the murder occurred in the heat of the moment.

But Caylee was just a helpless baby girl. And her murder was carefully plotted.

But In both cases, two murderers were free to walk:(

Nailed it. I am vehemently opposed to the death penalty--it's barbaric, expensive, inefficient, and often racist. And as we've seen in this case, it changes the jury's interpretation of reasonable doubt.

mezzoforte 07-05-2011 04:09 PM

Along those same lines, I can't help but wish that these highly publicized cases would inspire broader interest in law and the justice system.
Unfortunately, horrifying crimes are committed every day, and only a select few capture the zeitgeist and horrify America: Caylee Anthony, Laci Peterson, and Natalee Holloway (notably, all of whom are white and photogenic). Thousands of similar crimes and subsequent trials go unnoticed.
I'm not trying to minimize the tragedy of Caylee's death, but I see so many comments and tweets along the lines of, "WHITE TRASH HO! SOMEONE SHOULD KILL HER!"
To me, that's unproductive. Justice for Caylee (and other children) might include re-thinking the death penalty or forming new strategies to protect children from unstable parents.

Not that I am for the death penalty, but I wouldn't say this is the reason they found her not guilty. There were several lesser charges they could have found her guilty for, such as manslaughter, which would not result in the death penalty. Not only that, but even if they found her guilty of 1st degree murder, they would have also had find it was premeditated for the death penalty to be utilized.

Street_Dreamer 07-05-2011 05:39 PM

If Casey didn't do it, shouldn't the police and other authorities be right back on the case to find who really killed Caylee?

Matt

jannieC 07-05-2011 06:10 PM

I was not expecting a 1st degree murder verdict but I am really shocked by this. I can't wrap my head around the fact that she is walking away from all of this. I have many comments to make but they're emotional and probably not very original anyway. A very sad day, all around.

chiliD 07-05-2011 06:42 PM

And, now, out come all the closet vigilantes. She'll be lucky to live 2 more years. Maybe she'd live longer had she been given the Death Penalty...basically, by letting her off, she's a target, now.

Jondalar 07-05-2011 06:46 PM

I guess the moral of the story is if you kill your child, hide the body until it rots a little, so no one can find a cause of death and then go out partying. Accuse someone in your past of molesting you to get sympathy but don't even try to back up the allegation. Lie to police and be a woman. Then you can get off scott free. If that was a man, he would of already been hung. Makes me sick to my stomach. She killed that little girl and put her parents through hell. I hope she rots in hell.

David 07-05-2011 07:14 PM

Caylee died accidentally in a swimming pool, the defense maintained.

Were adults present? An "accident" doesn't necessarily absolve a person of lesser charges of recklessness, neglect, or endangerment --- given that a 2-year-old in a swimming pool was involved.

Grandpa denies that he tampered with a corpse ... but that's definitely a crime, too.

SortaSavageLike 07-05-2011 07:24 PM

Can we at least give her the death penalty for wasting everyone's time for so many months?

Oh, if she got the death penalty she'd waste everyone's time for a few more years (decades?) in our seemingly endless appeal process.

I wonder if Casey weren't white if she would have been found not guilty.

I'm opposed to the death penalty as well, and Ed and Grace make strong points above. I do believe that the lack of physical evidence influenced the jury.

A very sad day, though. Caylee has been failed by her mother, her grandparents, and now the justice system.

I along with many was shocked today when they read the verdict live. In the tiniest chance she didn't do it, I am happy a life was saved. And you have to respect a jury's decision and the process I guess. The more I think about it, the more I wonder if this jury had already made up their minds about her the first few days of trial.

I understand why the jury made the decision they did, doesn't mean I am happy about it. And just because she was found not guilty does not make her innocent of the crime. If she was responsible she will have to answer to God one day.

Well said. Unfortunately, they had very little physical evidence (and what they did have was pretty circumstantial) & no witnesses to the crime. Sad.

SuzeQuze 07-06-2011 12:08 PM

Okay, Dr Drew got me sucked into this trial against my better judgement. I watched his show every night which, as soon as the trial began, was taken over by the trial. So here is my book on this subject!

Have you smelled death? They could have convicted her of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

I think the death penalty should be abolished as well as cameras in courtrooms. I believe they both make it more difficult to get a conviction in a circumstantial case. Nobody wants to be wrong with the whole world watching or if the punishment is completely final and irreversible. You can never be 100% sure. The law is reasonable doubt, which means if you have a doubt then you think it through applying reason. If the evidence makes sense upon reasoning it out then you can confidently convict on it.

I served on a jury and everyone was ready to let this guy go and so that they could go home. The jury didn’t want to think, they had some doubt and wanted to say not-guilty based on that. Only myself and 1 or 2 other jurors were actually motivated to have reasonable doubt defined for us and then go through the evidence meticulously. It was just an OUI case but I didn’t think letting the guy off without really looking at things would do anyone any favors in the long run. It was hard though, the court made me the speaker and so I had to deliver the guilty verdict. That was scary. I can’t imagine delivering that on camera, even if only via audio. I might have even have let him off! Casey, no, I wouldn’t have let her off.

Me too, my stomach turns every time I see Casey or Caylee’s face. The former out of sheer disgust, the latter out of grief.

I also oppose the death penalty for these reasons and more as well. Casey may have been convicted if she weren’t an attractive, middle-class, white woman.

Where is strandinthewind when we need him?

I’d like to hear from the jury. So far they’re not talking. An alternate did talk. He agrees with the verdict. He said it was probably an accident that snowballed (there was no evidence of this). He found George Anthony not credible and I think dismissed a lot of his testimony. I think Baez's opening statement colored his view. That actually worked. He didn’t believe Caylee’s remains were ever in the trunk and dismissed the evidence presented supporting that theory. He seemed to blame the whole family for what happened. “I think that’s how they buried Caylee”. I don’t know how he can say that and believe she should have been found not guilty.

We really need to teach critical thinking in our schools.

Seriously, defense lawyers write this formula down. The jury let the defense evoke their sympathy for Casey. Example of jury sending a man to death row on circumstantial evidence; Scott Peterson. Who ironically did not get off scot-free. I agree that if she were a man she probably would have been convicted.

Somehow Baez got the jury’s buy-in that Casey was the victim. Even if she was molested, 1 in 4 women are molested, and they don’t kill their children. Caylee is the only victim here and there is only one person responsible for her murder. I believe Casey is a sociopath, she won’t stop behaving egregiously, and karma will get her as Heartboy said.

BTFLCHLD 07-06-2011 01:07 PM

idk if casey was the last one to see caylee alive, and has claimed caylee's death was an accident, one would think she would just finally come out to state what happened. or is that so out of the question?

The statement issued afterwards "While the family may never know what has happened to Caylee Marie Anthony, they now have closure for this chapter of their life. They will now begin the long process of rebuilding their lives. Despite the baseless defense chosen by Casey Anthony, the family believes that the Jury made a fair decision based on the evidence presented, the testimony presented, the scientific information presented and the rules that were given to them by the Honorable Judge Perry to guide them........"

The defense over and over stated that Caylee's death was by accidental drowning, and stated the grandfather brought the child to Casey afterwards, and then there was some sort of coverup. This must not be the case, as the statement impies they don't know what happened.

This is all very sick. Someone needs to be held accountable for that child's death.

He had to have been a genius to do this! I did not follow this case the way I have followed others in the past (please don't get me started on JonBenet Ramsey), but I have caught coverage here and there and have found Casey Anthony to be completely UNlikeable, UNbelievable, etc etc. I just can't believe she got nothing. Nothing!

I don't find it hard to accept that her father may have molested her. But you're 100% right in that it doesn't give her an "excuse" to cover up her child's death (or cause it- whatever actually did happen)! And actually, the "one out of four" statistic covers reported sexual abuse. Think about all of the unreported abuse going on in this world. We'd all be baby killers.

I don't understand why anyone would believe that her father molested her. Casey has told one lie after another and she even bragged that she could lie her way out of anything. The defense threw that out there and didn't even try to back it up. Smoke and Mirrors. Anything to take the emphasis off Casey.

I'm not saying I believe her; I'm saying that I wouldn't be surprised if there actually was sexual abuse in that family. I have nothing to back that up, so that's why I don't state it as a fact. The whole family is whacked, plain and simple.

How is the whole family whacked? You have a hard working mother and father who loved their grand daughter. The only thing I see that made that family dysfunctional was Casey. The world revolved around her. She lied and lied and literally put her family through hell.

I know and I thought Baez was an idiot, but he seems to have pulled it off. :distress: I think judges should be stricter about what they allow. Obfuscation does not equal a fair trial. Somehow this jury saw George as a villain. They denied the opening statement affected them but stated that they didn't believe his testimony. So it obviously did color their opinion. I'm generalizing based on the one statement of the alternate juror which was in the link from my previous post. Listen to it, it's so shocking. I can't wait to hear from other jurors. I would be very surprised if not one comes forward.

Me neither but I'm leaning toward it never happened. It's staggering to think how many actual cases are out there.

The defense team celebrated with champagne near the courthouse after the trial was over. I think that was in such poor taste. Later, Cheney Mason gave one of the reporters the finger caught in this lovely picture. http://abcnews.go.com/US/slideshow/c...rdict-14003550

It's disgusting. Everyone is outraged and it is not about the defense at all. It is about being outraged at the injustice for Caylee's murder. The gesture was extremely disrespectful to her memory, and I am being kind here. Mason somehow thinks this is about him. Get over it, it's a high profile case and the media is covering it, if you don't like it, GO HOME!

I don't think defense team actually put on a good defense. I think the jury wanted more from the prosecution like more DNA evidence.

I also think the jury was a little bit whacked. I heard the alternate jurors interview and he took the defense side all the way, including the part about Casey Anthony being a good mother. Casey's mom even said she was not a good mother. I mean I'm sure Casey probably tried to seem like a good mother in front of her friends, but her mom would know the truth. He also acted like Casey's father testimony was discredited. Based on what? The statements of a proven liar. A woman who had the gull to kill her own child would be capable of telling huge lies about her own family to save her ass.

I think the prosecution did a great job trying the case. The body was soooo decomposed that they never had enough dna evidence. However, I think Casey's actions such as not reporting her daughter missing after a month and all her lies actually were more than circumstantial evidence. The only reason Caley missing even got reported was because of her mother.

I really believe that the reason why she got away with it was because she was a woman.

BTFLCHLD 07-06-2011 07:22 PM

id be curious how they are able to resolve 30+ year old murders with dna evidence that may include exhumation of bones yet her body was too decomposed.

did they mention the cadaver dog that went balistic outside the vehicle? there was a time when that was good enough evidence.

if i found that someone is looking up 'household weapons' 'neck breaking' etc id pretty much know without a doubt they are considering killing somebody and then if that somebody went missing and later was found dead...well.

are they planning on doing anything about dirtbag that tampered with the evidence?

This is a very interesting article examining the Anthony family dynamics. "Whacked" isn't a nice word- I shouldn't have used it.

I agree the defense didn't put on a good defense but it was effective. It worked to discredit anything the family said in the eyes of the jury. They found none of them credible despite the fact that there was no evidence of molestation.

The prosecution did do a great job, I agree. I also agree that Casey wouldn't have gotten off if she were a man. I think the jury was more sympathetic to her because she was a young mother. They bought into the defense's blaming the family for her behavior. They then decided, clouded with that bias they may not have even been aware of, that there wasn't enough evidence. Did they really need a smoking gun to convict? I wouldn't have and would still be in that room holding out for a guilty verdict.

SuzeQuze 07-07-2011 08:42 AM

Casey's Tattoo is stupid

First, it's a crappy tattoo. Second, in Spanish the adjective follows the noun so the tattoo should read Vita Bella. Third, the Spanish word for life is vida, so it actually should read Vida Bella. Translations made via http://babelfish.yahoo.com/.

Also, vita translates to bollard which means "a post of metal or wood on a wharf around which to fasten mooring lines" according to http://www.merriam-webster.com/.

So Casey's tattoo translates to Life Bollard. As a post stuck in the sea, that's a good life for her indeed.

Spanish speakers please chime in and correct me where I may be wrong.

SuzeQuze 07-07-2011 09:22 AM

Oh yeah! Casey's ex fiance is on Dr Drew tonight! Finally some inside info on the family. Granted we have to remember he's got his own agenda but still I can't wait for the scoop! I think an ex friend is also going to appear.

KarmaContestant 07-07-2011 09:50 AM

I think she's guilty. Very, very guilty.

People keep saying the justice system is broken or that it doesn't work, but I have to disagree. The whole point of a jury trial is to be judged by a group of peers, and that's exactly what happened. The prosecution had the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and they just couldn't do it.
