The saddest thing is that this never made it onto an album. Absolutely unbelievably baffling.

Allycattt 07-03-2011 09:15 PM

This song is definetly in my top Stevie demos. It's SOOO good. Everything about it. I just love it.

Morgana 07-03-2011 09:24 PM

Another one of those, "gems" that never saw the light of day on an album! I think it was written during the Rumours era and a hopeful for the album.

Allycattt 07-03-2011 09:30 PM

I remember reading somewhere that this song was intended to be on the Rhiannon movie soundtrack or whatever. I could easily be wrong though.

Oh Hell YES!!! One of my all time favorite Stevie piano demos EVER! This is one of 9 or 10 of the infamous songs of Rhiannon that Stevie demoed for a potential movie screenplay project she had based upon the trilogy of books written in the early 70's about Rhiannon & Welsh mythology (TRIAD, Songs of Rhiannon) If I recall correctly these were recorded sometime in 1978.

I wish Stevie would record this song, she's already let about 3 or 4 make it to official release already (Sorcerer, Planets Of The Universe, Kind Of Woman). Or better yet, she should just record all her songs of Rhiannon for the ultimate concept album. An intoxicating gothic torch record. What a sweet way to bookend her recording career. She could re-record Rhiannon as a haunting beautiful string-laden ballad as she intended when she originally composed it, plus all the other gorgeous ballads (Maker Of Bird, Forsaken Love etc.) Stevie wouldn't even have to bother with a movie, just let the songs be recorded & released, let the lore build. Someone else someday would probably be inspired by these songs & story to bring Stevie's Rhiannon compositions & vision to fruition on screen or stage.

No you are not alone. I've NEVER really gotten all the rabid love for this one. I mean, I like some of the words, but it just plods along. I dont get what makes it so great. I AM all for a RHIANNON project tho.

mitzo 07-04-2011 06:09 AM

Those who don't like this may see Stevie as a rocker, and don't get the heart wrenching ballads.

Maybe soon Stevie will return to her Rhiannon project.
I agree........that would be one hell of a rockin album/CD! :D I've read Triad, which is different from the original Irish folk tales: The Mabinogion, about Rhiannon. I am just now starting to read that series and I started of course with the book @ Rhiannon: The Song of Rhiannon by Evangeline Walton. Now I have to get the other books to see where the Forest of the Black Roses comes into play.

Has anyone else read the books?

No. I'm not a big fan of the Rhiannon trilogy. The Maker of the Birds is just as bland as this song.

When you say "in their original recordings " do you mean something like a box set of demos? That would be very cool. I like the demos, but I like it more when she takes a song we've known ( for so long in demo form), and fully records and releases it officially.

I literally have dreams about this. There is NOTHING I'd like Stevie to do more than record the songs of Rhiannon + a few other tracks to have the most haunting record EVER.

So if "Forest of the Black Roses" has it's own thread, why doesn't "Forsaken Love"?!?! ;) That's probably my all-time favorite Stevie demo (srsly) and I think it would work well with the other songs of Rhiannon.

Aussie W/Heart 07-05-2011 10:45 PM

I think we need to start a Rhiannon Project campaign, im not on Twitter but have heard about Annabel Lee, perhaps that could be a good way to get the ball rolling:thumbsup:

She used these lines in "If You Ever Did Believe."

This was one of the first stevie songs i ve ever heard when i became a fan and it made me cry. I love it.
I remember feelin a little weird for tearing up while hearing :)

darklinensuit 07-06-2011 05:22 PM

Stevie's voice was in great form when FOTBR was recorded. I like it, but I prefer "Three Birds of Rhiannon" because of its last verse. "For you, Rhiannon..."

Well I do mean in the original way that we have them now left as they are untouched. I guess I just think some things should be left alone. I'd love a demos'/outttakes/extended versions/masters box set with some killer outtake photos too to go along with it. We all know it could be a beautiful thing really. Than I guess 'if' we aren't gonna get it that way I'll take it whatever way I can get it meaning a 'new' version but I sometimes don't care for the new versions. It seems that the passion is lost in translation or something. Like on 'Smile At You' SYW version just doesn't have the fire/passion plus the lyrics were changed which I don't like much either. Than you'll have people that love it that way. I guess its what you love. Thats what I love. :D:shrug:
