With You On My Mind aka Stars...

Check it out, "Stars Are Crazy" is Lisa Dewey's song "With You On My Mind"...

WildHearted 06-29-2011 09:01 PM

Wait, what?

Color me confused.

Let's hope LB gives proper credit on the CD.

Wow, i wasn't expecting that. I really thought those were his lyrics. Bummer.

Shut Us Down

I always wondered whose version of Shut Us Down came first, Lindsey's or Corey Sipper's. Lindsey shared writing credit with her on Under The Skin and the Elizabethtown soundtrack.

elle 06-29-2011 10:21 PM

although stars are the last on my list from 6 new songs we've heard, i have to say his version is a vast improvement on the 2004 original.

and, i'm actually glad that most of the words are not his... was briefly worried about the state of his marriage after hearing that one;).

wondergirl9847 06-29-2011 10:24 PM

Interesting....

I like the melody of the song, but good gravy, she is a terrible singer.

Just looked at her website and she put out an album called.....wait for it....Busk. HA!

michelej1 06-30-2011 12:47 AM

Awwww, darn. It's not the same if he didn't write it, especially since that was a stand out song.

I hope he wrote, In Our Own Time.

LBFan, Cory's song came first. Someone posted her lyrics so that we could compare them to Lindsey's a few years ago. It was interesting to see his changes. Michele

Nico 06-30-2011 12:48 AM

OMG, that song by her is pure awful. :distress:

She should be glad an artist of Lindsey's caliber was able to rescue it from being another track you skip over or ignore.

holidayroad 06-30-2011 07:26 AM

Hey, I've heard this song before! I have yet to listen to LB's version, though. I definitely want to hear the album version before I listen to the live one.

D.W-Suite 06-30-2011 10:59 AM

This pleases me. I must have been one of the few die-hard Lindsey fans on here who actually couldn't care less for Stars... It might grow on me like Time Precious Time did, but the 1st time I heard it I thought it was a bit annoying, again like Time Precious Time, I thought it was far too oriented on showing off what he could do with his fingers, without really having a nice melody. Unlike Seeds We Sow, which is a really pretty yet skillful composition.

Maybe for the same reason he chose Teen Beat. :p

No certainly, as with Try for the Sun and Shut Us Down the minds inquire endlessly.

Lindsey's version of Try for the Sun, in my opinion, is one of the best pieces he has ever done. I find it incredible! SUD is amazing live, but I don't really care for it on the record.

I have to say Stars and In Our Own Time really didn't do much for me. I'm sure i'll appreciate them more once I hear the actual album versions.

interesting. like you, i LOVE to try for the sun, and do not like stars much although have to admit LB's version definitely adds something to the original. but i love love love in our own time - and illumination and the way love goes! how do you feel about latter two songs? or the end of time?

Lisa Dewey
I became a Lisa Dewey fan after seeing her open for Mekons in 2007.

From a recent news release:
"...I have a co-write ("Stars Are Crazy") on the upcoming Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac) CD, Seeds We Sow, due out September 6, 2011.
" The song, "Stars Are Crazy," will also be included on the DVD Lindsey Buckingham Live at The Saban Theatre.
"Purchase of the CD, DVD or digital file of the song, "Stars Are Crazy," will directly benefit my band [and]...fund the release of the next Lisa Dewey CD..."

Dewey's DecimalsSan Jose songwriter Lisa Dewey could earn big bucks thanks to Lindsey Buckingham's version of her tune 'With You on My Mind'

I AM sitting in a coffee shop, and Lisa Dewey is showing me a private image on her phone. As I look closer, I see a scanned photo of a check from the Lindsey Buckingham Trust. I can't divulge the amount, but it's safe to say that if Buckingham's upcoming album, Seeds We Sow, takes off, Lisa will make a pile of dough. She'll either go insane, or it'll be a holiday road of some sort.

The story here is every San Jose songwriter's dream. I think. A longtime fixture in the San Jose alt-rock milieu, Lisa has written tons of songs, released quite a few albums on her own label, toured all over the United States more than once and hangs out with everyone from the Bangles to Concrete Blonde. She has put this city on the map, much more than any of the politicians. But since San Jose is an impossible no man's land of a place from which to base one's self, she has not always been able to make a fulltime living as a serious musician or songwriter.

Buckingham, of course, plays and sings for Fleetwood Mac and gets royalties every time one of its tunes plays on the canned stereo in supermarkets and dentists' offices worldwide. Income-wise, he can stop thinking about tomorrow whenever he wants.

A few years ago, Lisa appeared backstage at Buckingham's 2006 solo gig at the Palace of Fine Arts. She hung out for a few hours and unloaded one of her CDs on the guy. Just recently, she received a call from Buckingham's manager, informing her she now has a "co-write" on the upcoming Seeds We Sow album, available Sept. 6. Apparently, Buckingham enjoyed one of Lisa's songs so much he decided to rework it for himself.

That's right, a Lisa Dewey tune, "With You on My Mind," has now transmogrified into "Stars Are Crazy" on Buckingham's new album. She will get royalties whenever it plays live, on the radio, or even on the canned system at Whole Foods. If the album goes gold, she gets even more royalties.

Being a reputable dude, Buckingham didn't steal the track and call it his own. His manager phoned Lisa and offered her a contract to make sure she was taken care of. But she wasn't satisfied. Everyone has the right to negotiate such things, so she contacted old pal Michael Steele of the Bangles, who relayed her to attorney Michael O. Crain. Crain was the lawyer who represented the estates of Jerry Garcia, John Lennon and Bob Marley when Moe's burrito chain was sued for using those artists' names and images without licensing them.

"I'm getting credit on the album, the DVD and proceeds," says Lisa. "And royalties, mechanicals and what have you, forever more. I'm really excited that I'll be able to take whatever income comes from this, and as an artist, put it right back into my music. And be able to go back and do my music full time again, because I haven't been able to in a couple of years."

Luckily, the original Lisa Dewey song remains her property. The Buckingham tune is legally a co-write with a different title. That means when Lisa plays at the Blank Club this Saturday, she can say "With You on My Mind" is a tune transmogrified by Lindsey Buckingham. "We're going to play the Lisa Dewey version," she says. "In the deal, my song is still untouched."

Many musicians who've grown up in San Jose and haven't left yet will testify that part of the human condition here is dealing with the ridicule and disrespect hurled at San Jose from musicians in other, more happening cities. One often secretly longs to be that one musician who finally makes the big time without having to permanently leave San Jose and set up shop somewhere else.

"I could have gone to Los Angeles or San Francisco or New York, but I went and played all those places instead, a few times a year," Lisa said. "I decided to stay where I was because I like San Jose. And I really like the community here. I think we have a great artist community, and I think it's underrated. I have some amazing friends, and some amazing artists have come from San Jose. This city is not given its due at all. I'm sick of people saying San Jose sucks. I've stayed here because I want to prove that you can be here and make it."

Amen. Someday Lisa will be mayor, and I will write the State of the City Address.

Interesting.

She's obviously worked what she thinks is a good deal for herself but if she's just getting a bit of cash every time someone buys the album/DVD then I fear she's overestimating how much she'll make. This album will sell a few tens of thousands of copies and all she is getting is a single co-write of one of eleven songs. It's not exactly big bucks considering that, even on the same track, Lindsey will get performance, production and co-writing money.

Still, perhaps she got a good advance as well. I guess that both Lindsey and Lisa are happy otherwise this song wouldn't be getting released, and I like Lindsey's version so I'm glad it didn't get axed because of legal wrangling.

She'll get her half of 9.1 cents per album sold in mechanical royalties and about a $2.00 (if that) check every quarter from whichever PRO she is signed with. This is assuming she's her own publisher.

Hope that advance check was sizable because she'll have about enough to buy a latte every 3 months.

Yeah, she sounds quite full of herself and a little too preoccupied with money. But, whatever floats your boat. Peeps got to make their money somehow.

Her version of that song sucks, even if she wrote it. Not gonna lie.

Well we would have known once the album came out and we saw the songwriting credits anyway. It's not like the advance was to keep her quiet about it.

I heard he did horrible things to Emily Dickinson to make sure she kept her yap shut.

He actually tickled me when he said that he didn't think Donovan liked his cover and he tried to mimic Donovan's disapproving Scottish accent. I've heard Stevie do an accent, but not Lindsey.

Regina 07-07-2011 03:42 PM

This girl is a little delusional. In many ways.
I LOVE the song (well, Lindsey's version. I had no interest in hearing her's, even if she wrote it) but, God bless him, he doesn't sell a lot.
Which brings up another point I've been meaning to bring up. And, it's kind of just me yammering but it's sad. I looked at the Morristown, NJ date and the tickets have been on sale for a couple of weeks now and 3/4 of the place is still empty. In a very small venue.
But, throw a FM concert and how many hundreds of people are pushing against that stage to touch Lindsey, play his guitar, worship at his feet....yet, no one supports his solo stuff (even though he throws in enough FM to keep everyone happy).
So, I give him tremendous props for continuing to push himself as an artist and to put himself out there for his fans (even though we're not a massive crowd).
Ugh. That was a tangent. But, it's free association time at the home!

wondergirl9847 07-07-2011 04:20 PM

Wierd.

Well, he may not be selling well in New Jersey, but the Clearwater, Florida show is sold out and it happened quickly.

Location, location, location, I guess.

i'm with you on giving him ginormous props for pushing himself as an artist , touring and putting himself out there for fans.:xoxo:

re NJ date, you know, he has numerous dates in or around NYC, this Morristown being one of them - plus NYC Town Hall (that did not go on sale yet), Ridgefield, Westhampton, even Keswick is not that far... meanwhile the only date in larger DC area is north of Baltimore (no Virginia, no DC venues, no closer in MD such as Bethesda...). and no mid-NJ date (i guess you can count Keswick, PA for that again). so maybe that's the reason?

none of the other venues i looked at for tickets sold just 1/4 - usually after just a day of sales they seemed to be about 1/2 full (of course, with some it's hard to tell with the way they offer tickets).

EDIT: it may not help that link to Morristown date from LB's website is not working properly.

I laud him for that as well. He loses money on these tours and I'm thankful he keeps doing them. I'm not happy that FM goes on nostalgia tours and part of me wishes he wouldn't participate in that. But he does use the money to keep creating and to promote what he creates, even if there's no mass audience for it. So, I'm very happy.

I know I'm biased, but these SWS songs sound like some of the best work he's ever done and it would have been a travesty if he'd just hung up his guitar and decided to rest on GYOW.

Agree with this 100%. The new songs that were presented in live form months ago are some of the greatest music I have heard in a while. I won't lie, I'm not nuts about that free download song, but it's growing on me. Shoot, I still like it better than "Not Too Late" and I'm a HUGE fan of UTS. So this album sounds like it is going to be all kinds of fantastic!!!

Yes, I think it's an honourable model for any artist. I've worked in indie publishing for many years and the way we always spoke about it was that the guidebooks to trout fishing or golf courses made the money that allowed us to publish that slim volume of modernist Gaelic verse.

I applaud LB on this, too.
