MacShadowsBall's "Lucy" Thread
So as some of you know, I'm a big I Love Lucy and in general a Lucille Ball fan. She was an excellent comedienne and often referred to as the Queen of Comedy. She along with her husband, bandleader-turned-producer Desi Arnaz created the groundbreaking I Love Lucy television series in 1951, which laid down the basic foundation for what the television sitcom would be for decades to come.
Much like Fleetwood Mac and the Rumours album, Lucille Ball is known for much more that just the I Love Lucy show. She starred in several movies before and after her "Lucy" fame, along with 2 more TV sitcoms until 1974! So I thought each week or so I would share some of my favorite Lucille Ball works of art! 2nd Season of I Love Lucy - "Lucy Goes to the Hospital" ; January 19th, 1953 The baby is due any minute and to help calm Ricky's nerves, everyone smoothly rehearses the moment when Lucy will have to go to the hospital. |
When I was 10 years old, I had major spinal surgery that kept me in the hospital for over a month. I remember watching I Love Lucy reruns every evening at 5pm. She was awesome!
|
Yeah I was around 9-10 years old when I first discovered I Love Lucy. I remember watching it with my grandfather every night at 8pm on the old Nick@Nite.
|
This is one of my favorite movies...have you seen The Big Street?

This would have been the late 90's, and from what I understand, Nick@Nite has since shifted to shows from the 90's/00's. Needlessly, I think: the comedy of I Love Lucy has help up astoundingly well. |

Here's another one...
February 9th, 1959 episode of the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.
Lucy and the gang are up in Alaska, one day before their hotel rooms are ready and so they are all sharing a room! |
I need to sit down one of these days and watch some episodes of I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, and Here's Lucy. The first two are the only ones I've really seen much of. Lucy was a great comic actress, but the older she got, the less funny I found her slapstick humor to be. I've seen an episode or two of her last show, Life with Lucy, from the mid-'80s...to paraphrase a review I read, a 75-year old woman falling off a ladder just isn't funny. And she was terribly miscast in Mame. But in her prime, she was great.

http://thestir.cafemom.com/entertain...ball_quotes_on 20 Lucille Ball Quotes on Her 100th Birthday Posted by Sheri Reed on August 6, 2011 at 7:04 AM To watch Lucille Ball perform was to love her -- her big gorgeous eyes and her hysterical over-the-top comedic antics. And today commemorates her 100th birthday! And why else do we love her? Well, Ball was a bit of a rebel spirit and a pioneer in her day, eloping with Cuban-born Desi Arnaz in 1940, becoming the first woman to run a major Hollywood studio (Desilu), being one of the first actresses allowed to show her pregnancy on TV, having her first child at almost 40 years old, and later going through a very public Hollywood divorce from Arnaz. She was even registered as a Communist! Oh, how I love a woman who follows her own heart -- even if it leads her to the less popular of places. So let's celebrate Lucille Ball today by looking at 20 wonderful quotes and life lessons from the wise and much-loved comedienne. 20 Lucille Ball Quotes on Her 100th Birthday 1. I'm not funny. What I am is brave. |
