"You May Be The One"

Clearly this song is about Fleetwood Mac ~ verse three is about Lindsey, while the fourth is about Mick ~ but who are the first two about??? John in the first (But what "kiss?!?") and Christine in the second???

Jondalar 06-14-2011 03:26 PM

Have no clue but one of the best tracks on the album. Love it!

I'm confused...why is it clearly about Fleetwood Mac? It may well be about one member, but I don't think she wrote a verse per bandmate. What makes you think so?

Hmmmmm......you could be right.....maybe she's alternating the verses between two people. Maybe verses one and three are about Lindsey and two and four are about Mick (I don't think verse two could be about Lindsey, what with the "mystery to me" lyric...that's classic Stevie refering to early Fleetwood Mac!)

I still think, though, that this could be about the band ~ "We were magic" ~ it just has that kind of vibe, sort of like the "five fireflies!"

One of my favorite Stevie tracks ever:nod: that song just explodes with emotion. Man oh man, I remember on my first listen of IYD, I did not get past that song for a long while..i played it again and again.

Mick

TOTALLY agree.....it did something for me that a Stevie Nicks track hasn't done in a long time, and that's surprise me!
This cut bodes very well for the standards album Stevie's long said she wants to do!
Maybe a mix of originals and covers?!?

I agree......and I think Stevie was always thinking of a mix of stuff...."At Last". etc.

Would still love to see her do it, particularly after this track....but I'd also like to see the country album,,,,,and the Christmas album....and the duet album......and the "songs written by guys" album....and.....!!!!!:D

SapphireSister 06-14-2011 04:39 PM

You Might Be the One?? Isn't it You May Be the One?

jcfree 06-14-2011 05:06 PM

I love the blues flavor of this song! This is a slooooooow dancing type song, and a feel good one too! What can I say, LOVE IT!

BTFLCHLD 06-14-2011 05:09 PM

Maybe it's not about Fleetwood Mac at all. It could be about someone else. How can we know? personally I think it's about Buckingham, but that's just moi

Ha. Yes, if Stevie had sat down and done anything that structured, I think she'd talk about it. "Let's see: I'll write a line for each band member in order of their age . . . "

I like use of the phrase "mystery to me" just like I like "it's not enough that you say you love me," but in my heart of hearts, I'm pretty sure they weren't nods to Christine. I doubt that Stevie even knows Chris has a song called MTM. She might have known that in 1975, but I doubt she remembers it today.

But I would like to know what songs are about John. I know Chris has some, but if Lindsey and Stevie have any lyrics that are specifically about him, I wish they would tell us. Heck, why am I stopping with John??

I imagine that Stevie and Lindsey write about Chris (in addition to Think About It) and that Chris writes about them (in addition to Little Lies), but if any of them want to talk about their songs to each other, I'm all ears for that too!

I love this song, she has a voice that is made to sing the blues. She should embrace it. It sounds like she wrote it about events that may have taken place during and after the Say Your Will album and tour, IMO. It screams Lindsey to me. I think that John, Mick and Stevie could and should make a blues album, not sure if Lindsey would be into that though.

wheart 06-14-2011 08:13 PM

I though initially that this song was about, to some degree, Lindsey. But I was listening to it last night and during the chorses..."I used to love you...see the light inside of you..." it dawned on me she's talking about Fleetwood Mac (possibly). The final line certainlty describes Fleetwood Mac! But as with most of her songs, it's probably about Fleetwood Mac and Mick and Lindsey and a host of other people, places and things. That's why I love her songs so damn much. Because you can't figure them out completely because they're never about just one thing, for the most part.

daniellaaarisen 06-14-2011 08:26 PM

This song is entirely about Lindsey. There's just no other possibility in my mind.

Josh2003 06-14-2011 08:32 PM

I think it was inspired by Vanessa Carlton's "The One"...didn't Vanessa introduce "The One" once by saying it was about meeting some"one" who might be the "one," but isn't necessarily THE "one"? Or am I just making this up?

I think I'm in the minority here by thinking that Stevie does sometimes write songs about hypothetical situations...and I don't know why people still seem to think that every song is about Lindsey.

Agreed. It also might be the other side of "You're Not The One". Maybe there is a "One" Trilogy ending with "You're The One."

Anywho, it is now the most played Stevie song on my itunes. It might have inched it's way into my ultimate Top 3.

FM77 06-14-2011 09:28 PM

It's about Lindsey, Lindsey, Lindsey. So says Stevie Nicks. It is still my favorite track. She told me she wrote it while he was sitting right next to her.

Here's the clip.
.

It sounds like the lyrics might have come out of their conversation, but I don't think that means it's about a hypothetical situation. She refers to the idea that someone "may be the one, but never be the one" as a "universal theme," clearly implying that it's an idea she connects to.
That, in my mind, points to this being a song about one person in her life and not the gumbo pot of former flames and memories some of her songs are. And yeah, I'm pretty convinced she's writing about LB.

Yes and yes.

Thank you! I knew I'd heard it all somewhere before...and she's saying the EXACT lyrics!

Do I think that the song is entirely hypothetical? No. But do I think that it's written about one person in particular? Maybe, maybe not.

WildHearted 06-14-2011 10:23 PM

"I used to dream that you were an angel.." = the angel of my dreams

"You may cry the tears
But the tears aren't really for me
You say its taken years
Years of regret and pain
"

Lindsey does say this a lot in his little (long) speeches.

"Forget me not" Stevie says some variation of this in a multitude of self-admitted Lindsey songs...

"Says "I'm so afraid"
Says "theres no fear in your eyes.
Tell me another lie.""

Verdict: Lindsey.

TOTALLY. AGREE.

APerfectLie 06-15-2011 01:07 AM

Well, it seems to be about Lindsey, but I must say when I first heard it I thought it was about Joe Walsh. "I feel my blood racing, I can't believe what you are saying, I used to love you so much..." always made me think of Joe saying she was just a road **** with saggy boobs and how she is always going on and on and on and on about him being the love of her life.

jellyman10 06-15-2011 06:05 AM

I completely agree that not all SN's songs are about Lindsey, but this one is. One. Hundred. Per cent.

wheart 06-15-2011 11:23 AM

And then there's that whole "I hear Islands calling and angry words and flying across the ocean like sea birds...I can't remember the exact lyrics but that made me think instantly of that part in Destiny Rules when Stevie or possibly other folks went to Hawaii and the "heated" exchanges that went back and forth about the sequencing of Say You Will and the eventual decision to make SYW a single CD. It was kind of brushed over but I bet that part of the song is referencing that whole episode. It sounded like it got pretty ugly

LilyRose 06-15-2011 05:51 PM

Hmmmm.....

I think this song has great potential to be about Lindsey.

And then there was the kiss
Right out there in the universe
How did that happen?
No, it could not have been worse

I really wonder if that's about the kiss that Lindsey planted on her during GYOW in Landover, '97.

Or maybe it's just my overactive imagination. :)

SapphireSister 06-15-2011 06:10 PM

Stevie writing songs about LB =. Sorry, it's just how I feel although this one apparently is.

Christopher 06-15-2011 06:24 PM

On a shipper scale of 1-10 I'm about a 3 - 4, but even I definitely believe this whole song is about Lindsey, and her current outlook about the two of them. All the lyrics fit.
